Interactions of selected bacterial isolates with DBT and solubilized coal
We are studying the interactions of isolated bacteria with dibenzothiophene (DBT), a sulfur-containing model compound, and with a solubilized coal product derived from a high-organic-sulfur lignite. The sensitivity of the tetrazolium assay used to identify and study these strains was improved by substituting tetrazolium violet for triphenyltetrazolium. DBT metabolism by thirteen strains was investigated using qualitative and quantitative GC and GC-MS analyses. Growth medium and incubation time affect the extent of DBT degradation and the production of DBT metabolites. Under specific conditions, seven of the strains produce metabolites which elute close to the position of one or another of the biphenyl standards. However, when these samples are spiked with the standard compounds, the bacterial metabolites do not co-elute with the standards. The modification of solubilized high-organic-sulfur coal by six of these strains was also studied. No selective removal of sulfur relative to carbon was observed. 13 refs., 1 fig., 2 tabs
Cyclophosphamide and human organ transplantation.
Cyclophosphamide, a drug that has not previously had an important role in whole-organ transplantation, was given as a primary immunosuppressant to one liver and eleven kidney recipients, in combination with prednisone and horse antilymphocyte globulin. One of the patients died despite good renal-graft function. Two kidneys from a common cadaveric donor failed. The other nine patients have excellent function of their homografts after 2-3 months. Cyclophosphamide was substituted for azathioprine in one hepatic and five renal recipients who were suspected of having liver toxicity from azathioprine 3 months to almost 8 years post-transplantation. Graft function was maintained after this change, and the evidence of liver injury subsided. © 1971
Measurements of the Branching Fractions and Helicity Amplitudes in B --> D* rho Decays
Using 9.1 fb-1 of e+ e- data collected at the Upsilon(4S) with the CLEO
detector using the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, measurements are reported for
both the branching fractions and the helicity amplitudes for the decays B- ->
D*0 rho- and B0bar -> D*+ rho-. The fraction of longitudinal polarization in
B0bar -> D*+ rho- is found to be consistent with that in B0bar -> D*+ l- nubar
at q^2 = M^2_rho, indicating that the factorization approximation works well.
The longitudinal polarization in the B- mode is similar. The measurements also
show evidence of non-trivial final-state interaction phases for the helicity
amplitudes.Comment: 11 pages postscript, also available through

A methane emissions reduction equivalence framework for alternative leak detection and repair programs
Fugitive methane emissions from the oil and gas sector are typically addressed through periodic leak detection and repair surveys. These surveys, conducted manually using handheld leak detection technologies, are time-consuming. To improve the speed and cost-effectiveness of leak detection, technology developers are introducing innovative solutions using mobile platforms, close-range portable systems, and permanent installations. Many of these new approaches promise faster, cheaper, or more effective leak detection than conventional methods. However, ensuring mitigation targets are achieved requires demonstrating that alternative approaches are at least as effective in reducing emissions as current approaches – a concept known as emissions reduction equivalence. Here, we propose a five-stage framework for demonstrating equivalence that combines controlled testing, simulation modeling, and field trials. The framework was developed in consultation with operators, regulators, academics, solution providers, consultants, and non-profit groups from Canada and the U.S. We present the equivalence framework and discuss challenges to implementation
Observation of the Decays B0->K+pi-pi0 and B0->rho-K+
We report the observation of B^0 decays to the K^+pi^-pi^0 final state using
a data sample of 78 fb^-1 collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^-
collider. With no assumptions about intermediate states in the decay, the
branching fraction is measured to be (36.6^{+4.2}_{-4.3}+- 3.0)*10^-6.We also
search for B decays to intermediate two-body states with the same K^+pi^-pi^0
final state. Significant B signals are observed in the rho(770)^- K^+ and
K^*(892)^+pi^- channels, with branching fractions of
(15.1^{+3.4+1.4+2.0}_{-3.3-1.5-2.1})* 10^-6 and
(14.8^{+4.6+1.5+2.4}_{-4.4-1.0-0.9})* 10^-6, respectively. The first error is
statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the largest
possible interference. Contributions from other possible two-body states will
be discussed. No CP asymmetry is found in the inclusive K^+pi^-pi^0 or rho^-K^+
modes, and we set 90% confidence level bounds on the asymmetry of
-0.12<A_{CP}<0.26 and -0.18<A_{CP}<0.64, respectively.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure
Observation of B+ -> K+ eta gamma
We report measurements of radiative B decays with K eta gamma final states,
using a data sample of 253 /fb recorded at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the
Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- storage ring. We observe B+ -> K+ eta gamma for
the first time with a branching fraction of (8.4 +- 1.5(stat) +1.2 -0.9(syst))
X 10^{-6} for M(Keta) K0 eta gamma.
We also search for B -> K3*(1780) gamma.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted by Phys. Lett.
Time-Dependent CP Violation Effects in Partially Reconstructed Decays
We report measurements of time-dependent decay rates for decays and extraction of CP violation parameters related to .
We use a partial reconstruction technique, whereby signal events are identified
using information only from the primary pion and the charged pion from the
decay of the . The analysis uses of data
accumulated at the resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB
asymmetric-energy collider. We measure the CP violation parameters
and .Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures. To appear in Physics Letters
Measurement of the Branching Fraction for B->eta' K and Search for B->eta'pi+
We report measurements for two-body charmless B decays with an eta' meson in
the final state. Using 11.1X10^6 BBbar pairs collected with the Belle detector,
we find BF(B^+ ->eta'K^+)=(79^+12_-11 +-9)x10^-6 and BF(B^0 ->
eta'K^0)=(55^+19_-16 +-8)x10^-6, where the first and second errors are
statistical and systematic, respectively. No signal is observed in the mode B^+
-> eta' pi^+, and we set a 90% confidence level upper limit of BF(B^+->
eta'pi^+) eta'K^+- decays is
investigated and a limit at 90% confidence level of -0.20<Acp<0.32 is obtained.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
