X-ray emission from stainless steel foils irradiated by femtosecond petawatt laser pulses
We report about nonlinear growth of x-ray emission intensity emitted from plasma generated by femtosecond petawatt laser pulses irradiating stainless steel foils. X-ray emission intensity increases as ∼ I 4.5 with laser intensity I on a target. High spectrally resolved x-ray emission from front and rear surfaces of 5 μm thickness stainless steel targets were obtained at the wavelength range 1.7-2.1 Å, for the first time in experiments at femtosecond petawatt laser facility J-KAREN-P. Total intensity of front x-ray spectra three times dominates to rear side spectra for maximum laser intensity I ≈ 3.21021 W/cm2. Growth of x-ray emission is mostly determined by contribution of bremsstrahlung radiation that allowed estimating bulk electron plasma temperature for various magnitude of laser intensity on target
Using of X-pinch as a source in X-ray radiography studying of initial stage of wire explosion
A wire explosion in a gaseous and condensed media extends possibilities of study of phase transitions of the
wire material. We studied the influence of the external media (air, water and oil) on the explosion of Cu, Ni and W
wires of diameter 10…50 µm. Wires were exploded by the current pulse with the rise time from 200 to 300 ns and
the amplitude up to 10 kA. The pulse was produced by a generator based on a low-inductance capacitor, the discharge
voltage being 20 kV. Experimental results are discussed on obtaining the wire explosion images in gaseous
and liquid media with the help of hard X-ray radiation of an X-pinch in the BIN facility. Exploded wires were
placed outside the BIN vacuum chamber and images were registered on the film without magnification. Spatial resolution
was limited by film grain structure, and reached 20…30 µm. Spectral range of the imaging radiation (15…
30 keV) was determined by vacuum chamber window material, film sensitivity and thickness of the media where
wire was exploded. Temporal resolution was about 10…20 ns and depended on X-pinch wire material and thickness.

Observation of Burst Intensification by Singularity Emitting Radiation generated from relativistic plasma with a high-intensity laser
Coherent x-rays via the Burst Intensification by Singularity Emitting Radiation (BISER) mechanism are generated from relativistic plasma in helium gas target. A broad modulation of the BISER spectrum, which is significantly wider than the harmonic order, is observed and characterized. In particular, we found that the modulation period can be as large as 41 eV
Study of hybrid Х pinches in different conditions
A standard X-pinch consists of two or more fine wires that cross at a single point as the load of a pulsed power generator. To simplify the X-pinch load, a hybrid configuration consisting of solid conical electrodes connected by a wire, has been suggested and tested on four generators ranging in current from 200 kA to 1 MA and risetimes varying from 45 to 170 ns. The experiments have shown that for each generator, a wire material, diameter and length can be found for which the X-pinches generate a single intense burst of soft x-rays and develop a single hot spot. Also they generated less hard x-ray intensity than that measured in comparable standard X-pinches.
Coulomb implosion mechanism of negative ion acceleration in laser plasmas
Coulomb implosion mechanism of the negatively charged ion acceleration in
laser plasmas is proposed. When a cluster target is irradiated by an intense
laser pulse and the Coulomb explosion of positively charged ions occurs, the
negative ions are accelerated inward. The maximum energy of negative ions is
several times lower than that of positive ions. The theoretical description and
Particle-in-Cell simulation of the Coulomb implosion mechanism and the evidence
of the negative ion acceleration in the experiments on the high intensity laser
pulse interaction with the cluster targets are presented.Comment: 4 page
High order harmonics from relativistic electron spikes
A new regime of relativistic high-order harmonic generation is discovered [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 135004 (2012)]. Multi-terawatt relativistic-irradiance (>1018 W/cm2) femtosecond (~30-50 fs) lasers focused to underdense (few×1019 cm-3) plasma formed in gas jet targets produce comb-like spectra with hundreds of even and odd harmonic orders reaching the photon energy of 360 eV, including the 'water window' spectral range. Harmonics are generated by either linearly or circularly polarized pulses from the J-KAREN (KPSI, JAEA) and Astra Gemini (CLF, RAL, UK) lasers. The photon number scalability has been demonstrated with a 120 TW laser producing 40 μJ/sr per harmonic at 120 eV. The experimental results are explained using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and catastrophe theory. A new mechanism of harmonic generation by sharp, structurally stable, oscillating electron spikes at the joint of boundaries of wake and bow waves excited by a laser pulse is introduced. In this paper detailed descriptions of the experiments, simulations and model are provided and new features are shown, including data obtained with a two-channel spectrograph, harmonic generation by circularly polarized laser pulses and angular distribution
Directed inward beams of ions in laser produced plasma
We investigated the ion characteristics in picosecond laser plasma
at laser radiation intensity of up to W/cm.
Our experimental observations of X-ray spectral line profiles
confirmed the presence of a great quantity of high-energy ions
(1 MeV) in laser plasma. Besides, by the
Doppler profile's red shift we revealed the high-energy ion motion
directed inward the target. For this phenomenon we suggest our
theoretical model. The high energy “tail” in the energy spectrum
of ions in laser plasmas can be explained by the pinch effect. The
effective way for production of beams of charged particles in laser
plasmas is the electric drift of these particles in electromagnetic
fields generated in the laser-produced plasmas
