Three-dimensional analytical magnetohydrostatic equilibria of rigidly rotating magnetospheres in cylindrical geometry
We present three-dimensional solutions of the magnetohydrostatic equations in
the co-rotating frame of reference outside a magnetized rigidly rotating
cylinder. We make no symmetry assumption for the magnetic field, but to be able
to make analytical progress we neglect outflows and specify a particular form
for the current density. The magnetohydrostatic equations can then be reduced
to a single linear partial differential equation for a pseudo-potential ,
from which the magnetic field can be calculated by differentiation. The
equation for can be solved by standard methods. The solutions can also be
used to determine the plasma pressure, density and temperature as functions of
all three spatial coordinates. Despite the obvious limitations of this
approach, it can for example be used as a simple tool to create
three-dimensional models for the closed field line regions of rotating

Effect of Hydro-Resistance Training on Bat Velocity
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of hydro-resistance training on bat velocity during mimicked baseball swings in twenty-five female college students. Subjects were pre-tested for bat velocity and assigned to dry land (n = 8), water (n = 8), and control (n = 9) groups. The dry land group swung a 737 g (26 oz) Easton T1 Thunderstick baseball bat for three sets of 15 swings, three days per week, for eight weeks. The water group performed the swings in shoulder deep water. The dry land and water groups also participated in mandatory team general resistance training three days per week. The control group performed no bat swing or resistance-training regimens. Mean bat velocity was measured with an electronic eye-timing device. A 3 x 2 (Group x Time) ANOVA with repeated measures was used for statistical analysis, followed up with Tukey’s post hoc test. Bat velocity decreased significantly for the dry land and water groups (24.0 ± 3.6 m/s to 20.6 ± 4.1 m/s and 23.8 ± 3.5 to 18.8 ± 4.1 m/s, respectively). Bat velocity did not change for the control group (21.5 ± 3.0 m/s to 20.2 ± 2.1 m/s). We speculate that the decreased bat velocity in the dry land and water groups was caused by the mandatory team general resistance-training program
Interaction of Platinum Films with the (0001#) and (0001) Surfaces of ZnO
In this investigation, the growth, structure, and electronic properties of Pt films on the polar surfaces of ZnO were examined using high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and low-energhy, electron diffraction (LEED). The growth mode of vapor-deposited Pt films on ZnO(0001#) and ZnO(0001) at 300 K was found to be nearly layer-by-layer. The surfaces of Pt films produced in this manner exhibited hexagonal symmetry and were stable up to 600 K. At higher temperatures, the Pt agglomerated into particles which remained oriented with respect to the ZnO substrate. HREELS results indicate that there are only weak interactions at the Pt/ZnO(0001#) interface, while charge transfer and Schottky barrier formation occures at the Pt/ZnO(0001) interface
Association is not causation: treatment effects cannot be estimated from observational data in heart failure
Aims:
Treatment ‘effects’ are often inferred from non-randomized and observational studies. These studies have inherent biases and limitations, which may make therapeutic inferences based on their results unreliable. We compared the conflicting findings of these studies to those of prospective randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in relation to pharmacological treatments for heart failure (HF).
Methods and results:
We searched Medline and Embase to identify studies of the association between non-randomized drug therapy and all-cause mortality in patients with HF until 31 December 2017. The treatments of interest were: angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, beta-blockers, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs), statins, and digoxin. We compared the findings of these observational studies with those of relevant RCTs. We identified 92 publications, reporting 94 non-randomized studies, describing 158 estimates of the ‘effect’ of the six treatments of interest on all-cause mortality, i.e. some studies examined more than one treatment and/or HF phenotype. These six treatments had been tested in 25 RCTs. For example, two pivotal RCTs showed that MRAs reduced mortality in patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction. However, only one of 12 non-randomized studies found that MRAs were of benefit, with 10 finding a neutral effect, and one a harmful effect.
Conclusion:
This comprehensive comparison of studies of non-randomized data with the findings of RCTs in HF shows that it is not possible to make reliable therapeutic inferences from observational associations. While trials undoubtedly leave gaps in evidence and enrol selected participants, they clearly remain the best guide to the treatment of patients
Gauge Group and Topology Change
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of topology change in the
initial universe. In this study, the concept of -cobordism is introduced to
argue about the topology change of the manifold on which a transformation group
acts. This -manifold has a fiber bundle structure if the group action is
free and is related to the spacetime in Kaluza-Klein theory or
Einstein-Yang-Mills system. Our results revealed that fundamental processes of
compactification in -manifolds. In these processes, the initial high
symmetry and multidimensional universe changes to present universe by the
mechanism which lowers the dimensions and symmetries.Comment: 8 page
Minimal basilar membrane motion in low-frequency hearing
Low-frequency hearing is critically important for speech and music perception, but no mechanical measurements have previously been available from inner ears with intact low-frequency parts. These regions of the cochlea may function in ways different from the extensively studied high-frequency regions, where the sensory outer hair cells produce force that greatly increases the sound-evoked vibrations of the basilar membrane. We used laser interferometry in vitro and optical coherence tomography in vivo to study the low-frequency part of the guinea pig cochlea, and found that sound stimulation caused motion of a minimal portion of the basilar membrane. Outside the region of peak movement, an exponential decline in motion amplitude occurred across the basilar membrane. The moving region had different dependence on stimulus frequency than the vibrations measured near the mechanosensitive stereocilia. This behavior differs substantially from the behavior found in the extensively studied high-frequency regions of the cochlea

Feeding ancient cities in South Asia: Dating the adoption of rice, millet and tropical pulses in the Indus civilisation

These include rice, millets and three tropical pulse species at two settlements in the hinterland of the urban site of Rakhigarhi. The dates confirm the role of native summer domesticates in the rise of Indus cities. They demonstrate that, from their earliest phases, a range of crops and variable strategies, including multi-cropping, were used to feed different urban centres. Many roads, one destination for T cell progenitors
The thymus manufactures new T cells throughout life but contains no self-renewing potential. Instead, replenishment depends on recruitment of bone marrow–derived progenitors that circulate in the blood. Attempts to identify thymic-homing progenitors, and to assess the degree to which they are precommitted to the T cell lineage, have led to complex and sometimes conflicting results.
