Needs assessment: strategies for raising awareness of construction management programs among high school counselors
2014 Summer.Includes bibliographical references.High school students comprise a high percentage of prospective students entering Construction Management (CM) departments. High school counselors are in a unique position to impart significant influence on these students as they make decisions about attending college. This is significant to CM departments because it has been observed by department advisors that high school counselors do not heavily influence current CM student's decisions to pursue a CM degree. The authors performed a needs assessment to test the accuracy of this observation, determine counselor's knowledge and perceptions of CM, and determine strategies for raising awareness. Phase I of the needs assessment surveyed first semester CM students to determine if counselors played a significant role in their decision to pursue a CM degree. The results revealed that students were meeting with their counselor for advice, but few reported the counselor influenced their decision. This confirmed the need to further explore the high school counselor's knowledge and perceptions of CM. Phase II of the needs assessment surveyed high school counselors in the state of Colorado. The results show that counselors do not possess a high level of knowledge regarding CM degrees and careers, but also shows that they would be willing to learn more if the right information and training opportunities were provided to them. The results also highlight the counselor's barriers to learning more about CM, namely lack of available information, lack of time, lack of training opportunities, and lack of student interest. In Phase III of the needs assessment, the High School Counselor Outreach Program (HSCOP) was developed with the specific goal of raising counselor's knowledge of CM programs. The HSCOP was specifically developed to address the counselor's need while respecting the barriers reported in Phase II. This two stage program closes the counselor's CM knowledge gap by giving CM departments an outline to provide targeted information packages to counselors in Stage 1 and accessible training opportunities in Stage 2
Spectral Properties From Lyman-alpha to H-alpha For An Essentially Complete Sample of Quasars I: Data
We have obtained quasi-simultaneous ultraviolet-optical spectra for 22 out of
23 quasars in the complete PG-X-ray sample with redshift, z<0.4, and M_B<-23.
The spectra cover rest-frame wavelengths from at least Lyman-alpha to H-alpha.
Here we provide a detailed description of the data, including careful
spectrophotometry and redshift determination. We also present direct
measurements of the continua, strong emission lines and features, including
Lyman-alpha, SiIV+OIV], CIV, CIII], SiIII], MgII, H-beta, [OIII],
He5876+NaI5890,5896, H-alpha, and blended iron emission in the UV and optical.
The widths, asymmetries and velocity shifts of profiles of strong emission
lines show that CIV and Lyman-alpha are very different from H-beta and H-alpha.
This suggests that the motion of the broad line region is related to the
ionization structure, but the data appears not agree with the radially
stratified ionization structure supported by reverberation mapping studies, and
therefore suggest that outflows contribute additional velocity components to

LabView Interface for School-Network DAQ Card
A low-cost DAQ card has been developed for school-network cosmic ray detector
projects, providing digitized data from photomultiplier tubes via a standard
serial interface. To facilitate analysis of these data and to provide students
with a starting point for custom readout systems, a model interface has been
developed using the National Instruments LabVIEW(R) system. This user-friendly
interface allows one to initialize the trigger coincidence conditions for
data-taking runs and to monitor incoming or pre-recorded data sets with
updating singles- and coincidence-rate plots and other user-selectable

Kinetics of the inner ring in the exciton emission pattern in GaAs coupled quantum wells
We report on the kinetics of the inner ring in the exciton emission pattern.
The formation time of the inner ring following the onset of the laser
excitation is found to be about 30 ns. The inner ring was also found to
disappear within 4 ns after the laser termination. The latter process is
accompanied by a jump in the photoluminescence (PL) intensity. The spatial
dependence of the PL-jump indicates that the excitons outside of the region of
laser excitation, including the inner ring region, are efficiently cooled to
the lattice temperature even during the laser excitation. The ring formation
and disappearance are explained in terms of exciton transport and cooling.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure
Single microwave photon detection in the micromaser
High efficiency single photon detection is an interesting problem for many
areas of physics, including low temperature measurement, quantum information
science and particle physics. For optical photons, there are many examples of
devices capable of detecting single photons with high efficiency. However
reliable single photon detection of microwaves is very difficult, principally
due to their low energy. In this paper we present the theory of a cascade
amplifier operating in the microwave regime that has an optimal quantum
efficiency of 93%. The device uses a microwave photon to trigger the stimulated
emission of a sequence of atoms where the energy transition is readily
detectable. A detailed description of the detector's operation and some
discussion of the potential limitations of the detector are presented.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
The Case for Optically-Thick High Velocity Broad Line Region Gas in Active Galactic Nuclei
A combined analysis of the profiles of the main broad quasar emission lines
in both Hubble Space Telescope and optical spectra shows that while the
profiles of the strong UV lines are quite similar, there is frequently a strong
increase in the Ly-alpha/H-alpha ratio in the high-velocity gas. We show that
the suggestion that the high velocity gas is optically-thin presents many
problems. We show that the relative strengths of the high velocity wings arise
naturally in an optically-thick BLR component. An optically-thick model
successfully explains the equivalent widths of the lines, the Ly-alpha/H-alpha
ratios and flatter Balmer decrements in the line wings, the strengths of CIII]
and the lambda 1400 blend, and the strong variability of high-velocity,
