    \u3ci\u3eStachybotrys atra\u3c/i\u3e, an Effective Aggregator of Peorian Loess

    Twelve cellulose-decomposing fungi were tested for aggregating ability with Peorian loess containing ground straw at a concentration of 1%. Of the 12 fungi, Stachybotrys atra was the most effective soil aggregator. Under laboratory conditions used, it produced from 2 to 30 times more aggregation than any of the other fungi tested. Studies were made of the influence of various environmental factors on the degree of aggregation effected by S. atra. An incubation time of 1 week was sufficient for a relatively high degree of aggregation. In comparison, longer periods resulted in only slightly improved aggregation. Varying the temperature between 20° and 28° C. had no appreciable effect on the aggregation by S. atra. Approximately equivalent aggregations were attained at the moisture levels of 20, 25, and 30%, which were definitely superior to the 10 and 15% levels. Alfalfa and straw, either separately or as a mixture, were satisfactory sources of energy material for S. atra. The aggregation obtained with alfalfa, however, was somewhat higher than that obtained with straw

    On Calculation of Thermal Conductivity from Einstein Relation in Equilibrium MD

    In equilibrium molecular dynamics, Einstein relation can be used to calculate the thermal conductivity. This method is equivalent to Green-Kubo relation and it does not require a derivation of an analytical form for the heat current. However, it is not commonly used as Green-Kubo relationship. Its wide use is hindered by the lack of a proper definition for integrated heat current (energy moment) under periodic boundary conditions. In this paper, we developed an appropriate definition for integrated heat current to calculate thermal conductivity of solids under periodic conditions. We applied this method to solid argon and silicon based systems; compared and contrasted with the Green-Kubo approach.Comment: We updated this manuscript from second version by changing the title and abstract.     This paper outlines a generic guideline for planning and implementing an action-based and transnational course in higher education for training the engineering competencies required in a future dynamic European workplace and economy. This guidance is intended for universities, research and teaching institutes, as well as for companies interested in establishing novel teaching concepts by closing the gap between know-how and experience. The guideline will provide suggestions and lessons learned for the realization of an efficient and effective implementation. Important development phases of the guideline are explained through a use case based on a master course, which has been jointly established in cooperation by four European universities. Learning objectives for this course aim at raising the awareness about sustainable value creation by focusing on the development of sustainable and technological innovations with entrepreneurial objectives

    Colonialism and Male Domestic Service Across the Asia Pacific

    Examining the role of Asian and indigenous male servants across the Asia Pacific from the late-19th century to the 1930s, this study shows how their ubiquitous presence in these purportedly \u27humble\u27 jobs gave them a degree of cultural influence that has been largely overlooked in the literature on labour mobility in the age of empire. With case studies from British Hong Kong, Singapore, Northern Australia, Fiji and British Columbia, French Indochina, the American Philippines and the Dutch East Indies, the book delves into the intimate and often conflicted relationships between European and American colonists and their servants. It explores the lives of \u27houseboys\u27, cooks and gardeners in the colonial home, considers the bell-boys and waiters in the grand colonial hotels, and follows the stewards and cabin-boys on steamships travelling across the Indian and Pacific Oceans. This broad conception of service allows Colonialism and Male Domestic Service across Asia and the Pacific to illuminate trans-colonial or cross-border influences through the mobility of servants and their employers. This path-breaking study is an important book for students and scholars of colonialism, labour history and the Asia Pacific region

    Referral Patterns for Pediatric Sports-Related Concussion in One New England Health Care System

    Introduction: Patients with concussion may benefit from care provided by professionals from multiple disciplines based on the constellation of symptoms being reported. This study analyzed referral patterns from primary care and sports medicine clinicians for pediatric patients with sports-related concussion in one health care system. Methods: A retrospective chart review identified referrals placed to physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, optometry, psychology, neuropsychology, audiology, neurology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, psychiatry, and sports medicine for pediatric patients with sports-related concussion. These patients were evaluated at MaineHealth family medicine, internal medicine/pediatrics, pediatrics, and sports medicine clinics in southern Maine between February 2019 and June 2022. Results: We identified 375 patients with concussions. These patients were most often evaluated by pediatrics (199; 53.1%) and sports medicine (160; 42.7%), with fewer evaluated by family medicine (28; 7.5%), internal medicine/pediatrics (8 patients; 2.1%), or internal medicine (6; 1.6%). The most common referrals were to physical therapy (40; 10.7%), sports medicine (21; 5.6%), psychology (11; 2.9%), and neurology (9; 2.4%). Sports medicine placed a significantly higher number of referrals (P \u3c .0001) than non-sports medicine disciplines. Discussion: Compared to prior research, fewer referrals were placed in this cohort of patients with concussion. Possible explanations include a larger population of uncomplicated concussions, the more rural setting in which this study occurred, or a lack of awareness of resources for further concussion care. Conclusions: Further investigation should be done to evaluate the causes of the reduced referrals and their impact on the recovery of pediatric athletes with concussion

    Beyond Transactional Narratives of Agency: Peer Consultants’ Antiracist Professionalization

    Social justice movements, especially Black Lives Matter, inspired many writing center administrators to reflect on their commitments to antiracism and engage with antiracist professional development with their staff. However, there is continued need to study the impact antiracist professional development has on writing center consultants’ ability to practice antiracism in sessions. This article presents a predominantly white institution (PWI) writing center’s attempt to do this work, with a particular emphasis on how antiracist professional development complicates portrayals of consultant agency within the writing center. The study analyzes qualitative data collected from consultants’ reflective writing, survey, and interview responses. Results illustrate that, in the context of enacting antiracism in and beyond the writing center, consultants showed messy, partial, and incomplete forms of agency with the professional development curriculum impacting consultants of color and white consultants differently. These findings suggest writing center studies must embrace an understanding of antiracist professional development that is reflective, fragmented, and iterative, and identify more concrete practices of antiracist consulting
