The Stochastic Dynamics of Rectangular and V-shaped Atomic Force Microscope Cantilevers in a Viscous Fluid and Near a Solid Boundary
Using a thermodynamic approach based upon the fluctuation-dissipation theorem
we quantify the stochastic dynamics of rectangular and V-shaped microscale
cantilevers immersed in a viscous fluid. We show that the stochastic cantilever
dynamics as measured by the displacement of the cantilever tip or by the angle
of the cantilever tip are different. We trace this difference to contributions
from the higher modes of the cantilever. We find that contributions from the
higher modes are significant in the dynamics of the cantilever tip-angle. For
the V-shaped cantilever the resulting flow field is three-dimensional and
complex in contrast to what is found for a long and slender rectangular
cantilever. Despite this complexity the stochastic dynamics can be predicted
using a two-dimensional model with an appropriately chosen length scale. We
also quantify the increased fluid dissipation that results as a V-shaped

Thin-film flow in helically wound rectangular channels with small torsion
Laminar gravity-driven thin-film flow down a helically-wound channel of rectangular cross-section with small torsion in which the fluid depth is small is considered. Neglecting the entrance and exit regions we obtain the steady-state solution that is independent of position along the axis of the channel, so that the flow, which comprises a primary flow in the direction of the axis of the channel and a secondary flow in the cross-sectional plane, depends only on position in the two-dimensional cross-section of the channel. A thin-film approximation yields explicit expressions for the fluid velocity and pressure in terms of the free-surface shape, the latter satisfying a non-linear ordinary differential equation that has a simple exact solution in the special case of a channel of rectangular cross-section. The predictions of the thin-film model are shown to be in good agreement with much more computationally intensive solutions of the small-helix-torsion Navier–Stokes equations. The present work has particular relevance to spiral particle separators used in the mineral-processing industry. The validity of an assumption commonly used in modelling flow in spiral separators, namely that the flow in the outer region of the separator cross-section is described by a free vortex, is shown to depend on the problem parameters
Order parameters in the Verwey phase transition
The Verwey phase transition in magnetite is analyzed on the basis of the
Landau theory. The free energy functional is expanded in a series of components
belonging to the primary and secondary order parameters. A low-temperature
phase with the monoclinic P2/c symmetry is a result of condensation of two
order parameters X_3 and \Delta_5 . The temperature dependence of the shear
elastic constant C_44 is derived and the mechanism of its softening is

Tribology of particle suspensions in rolling-sliding soft contacts
We investigate the lubrication of microsphere suspensions between compliant substrates, and probe the influence of matrix viscosity, particle phase volume, surface roughness and wetting, and slide-to-roll ratio (SRR). In general, the suspensions behave as a continuum in the elastohydrodynamic regime provided the film thickness, which is predicted from the product of speed and viscosity, is greater than the particle diameter. Below this, the frictional response is characteristic of the mixed and boundary regimes. In the boundary regime, friction is independent of phase volume above 5% and it is governed by the rolling friction associated with particles being entrained into the contact that is independent of SRR, which is made possible by substrate deformation. This study provides a benchmark for soft-tribology and biotribology studies involving more complex particle suspensions and particle-containing soft materials
Exponentially small heteroclinic breakdown in the generic Hopf-zero singularity
In this paper we prove the breakdown of an heteroclinic connection in the
analytic versal unfoldings of the generic Hopf-Zero singularity in an open set
of the parameter space. This heteroclinic orbit appears at any order if one
performs the normal form around the origin, therefore it is a phenomenon
"beyond all orders". In this paper we provide a formula for the distance
between the corresponding stable and unstable one dimensional manifolds which
is given by an exponentially small function in the perturbation parameter. Our
result applies both for conservative and dissipative unfoldings
Project EMPOWER: An Innovative Approach to Community Behavioral Health Service Delivery
Project EMPOWER was a grant funded initiative designed to positively impact a rural community by providing behavioral health services and case management to low-income families. An interdisciplinary service team comprised of behavioral health specialists and graduate level interns in the fields of social work, psychiatric nursing, and counseling worked to provide services under the supervision of a doctorate level clinical social work professor. Community partnerships were forged to increase opportunities for community members to have accessible, affordable services. Using an empowerment model rooted in systems and integrated practice, the services included assessments, referrals, group, individual and family counseling, child care, and psychoeducational workshops
