Noncoercive human intelligence gathering
Despite widespread recognition that coercive methods for intelligence gathering are unethical and counterproductive, there is an absence of empirical evidence for effective alternatives. We compared two non-coercive methods - the Modified Cognitive Interview (MCI) and Controlled Cognitive Engagement (CCE), adapted for intelligence gathering by adding a moral frame to encourage interviewees to consciously consider sharing intelligence. Participants from the general population experienced an unexpected live event where equipment was damaged, and an argument ensued. Prior to interview, participants were incentivised to withhold information about a target individual implicated in the event. CCE yielded more target information, more frequently than MCI (67% vs. 36%). Similarly, framing yielded target information more often (65% vs. 39%). The effects of interview and framing appear to be additive rather than interactive. Our results indicate combining non-coercive interview methods with moral framing can enhance intelligence gain
Improving professional observers’ veracity judgments by tactical interviewing
Understanding whether a person of interest is being truthful during an investigative interview is a constant challenge and is of concern to numerous criminal justice professionals, most of whom are not involved in conducting the interview itself. Here, we investigated police observers’ veracity detection performance having viewed interviews with truthtellers and deceivers using either the tactical use of evidence (TUE), strategic use of evidence (SUE) or a control technique. Thirty serving police officers participated as post-interview observers and each viewed 12 interviews in a counterbalanced order. After each interview, the officer made a veracity judgement. Overall, untrained police observers were significantly more accurate (68%) when making veracity judgements post-TUE interviews, whereas for both SUE and control performance was around chance (51% and 48%, respectively). Veracity performance for liars and truthtellers revealed a similar pattern of results (67% liars; 70% truthtellers) in the TUE condition. These results lend further support to the psychological literature highlighting the importance of how and when to reveal evidence or any other relevant event information during an investigative interview for ‘outing’ deceivers as well as allowing truthtellers early opportunities to demonstrate their innocence
Contribution of forbidden orbits in the photoabsorption spectra of atoms and molecules in a magnetic field
In a previous work [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{66}, 0134XX (2002)] we noted a
partial disagreement between quantum R-matrix and semiclassical calculations of
photoabsorption spectra of molecules in a magnetic field. We show this
disagreement is due to a non-vanishing contribution of processes which are
forbidden according to the usual semiclassical formalism. Formulas to include
these processes are obtained by using a refined stationary phase approximation.
The resulting higher order in contributions also account for previously
unexplained ``recurrences without closed-orbits''. Quantum and semiclassical
photoabsorption spectra for Rydberg atoms and molecules in a magnetic field are
calculated and compared to assess the validity of the first-order forbidden

Molecules in external fields: a semiclassical analysis
We undertake a semiclassical analysis of the spectral properties (modulations
of photoabsorption spectra, energy level statistics) of a simple Rydberg
molecule in static fields within the framework of Closed-Orbit/Periodic-Orbit
theories. We conclude that in addition to the usual classically allowed orbits
one must consider classically forbidden diffractive paths. Further, the
molecule brings in a new type of 'inelastic' diffractive trajectory, different
from the usual 'elastic' diffractive orbits encountered in previous studies of
atomic and analogous systems such as billiards with point-scatterers. The
relative importance of inelastic versus elastic diffraction is quantified by
merging the usual Closed Orbit theory framework with molecular quantum defect

Semiclassical quantization of the hydrogen atom in crossed electric and magnetic fields
The S-matrix theory formulation of closed-orbit theory recently proposed by
Granger and Greene is extended to atoms in crossed electric and magnetic
fields. We then present a semiclassical quantization of the hydrogen atom in
crossed fields, which succeeds in resolving individual lines in the spectrum,
but is restricted to the strongest lines of each n-manifold. By means of a
detailed semiclassical analysis of the quantum spectrum, we demonstrate that it
is the abundance of bifurcations of closed orbits that precludes the resolution
of finer details. They necessitate the inclusion of uniform semiclassical
approximations into the quantization process. Uniform approximations for the
generic types of closed-orbit bifurcation are derived, and a general method for
including them in a high-resolution semiclassical quantization is devised
Dilatonic global strings
We examine the field equations of a self-gravitating global string in low
energy superstring gravity, allowing for an arbitrary coupling of the global
string to the dilaton. Massive and massless dilatons are considered. For the
massive dilaton the spacetime is similar to the recently discovered
non-singular time-dependent Einstein self-gravitating global string, but the
massless dilaton generically gives a singular spacetime, even allowing for
time-dependence. We also demonstrate a time-dependent non-singular
string/anti-string configuration, in which the string pair causes a
compactification of two of the spatial dimensions, albeit on a very large

Understanding local knowledge and attitudes toward potential reintroduction of a former British wetland bird
Stakeholder acceptance and support is essential for long-term success in species reintroductions, and assessing social feasibility of reintroductions within human-occupied landscapes is an integral component of effective decision-making.
The Dalmatian pelican Pelecanus crispus is an extirpated British bird, and possible pelican reintroduction to British wetlands is under discussion. Any reintroduction planning must first assess local community awareness, attitudes, and acceptance of potential pelican arrival and associated habitat management, as part of wider socio-ecological feasibility assessment. Pelicans are distinctive species with potential to increase support for wetland conservation, but might provoke conflict through real or perceived competition with landscape users such as fishers; such conflict is already seen within Britain between fishers and cormorants.
We conducted an online survey of 590 respondents in the Somerset Levels and East Anglian Fens, Britain's largest wetland landscapes, to understand local views on pelican reintroduction, other reintroductions and wetland restoration, and to investigate correlates of varying attitudes toward coexistence with pelicans and five other waterbirds (grey heron, Eurasian bittern, little egret, common crane, great cormorant).
Respondents had generally positive views about previous reintroductions of other species, and had overall positive attitudes toward all six waterbirds. Two-thirds of respondents supported or strongly supported pelican reintroduction, but both benefits and concerns were identified in relation to its possible reintroduction. Anglers and hunters were more likely to hold negative attitudes toward pelicans, other waterbirds and wetland restoration. However, although anglers raised more concerns, they were not more likely to be unsupportive toward reintroduction. More socio-demographic predictors were associated with negative attitudes toward restoration required to establish pelican habitat, suggesting that positive feelings toward biodiversity are outweighed by concerns around potential exclusion from local landscapes.
Our findings suggest pelican reintroduction might be supported by local stakeholders. Attitudes toward cormorants do not represent a blueprint for attitudes toward pelicans, and anglers may support reintroduction if concerns around impacts to fish stocks are addressed. Community engagement for species-specific and landscape-scale actions require separate approaches, with landscape management planning needing to target a wider range of stakeholder groups with separate concerns to those about coexistence with pelicans

Strengthening biological security after COVID-19: Using cartoons for engaging life science stakeholders with the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC)
YesThe devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have acutely shown the need for maintaining robust international and national systems for biological security and ensuring that life sciences are used only for peaceful purposes. Life science stakeholders can play an important role in safeguarding scientific and technological advances in biology and related fields against accidental or deliberate misuse, not least because they are on the frontlines of driving innovation. In this paper, we argue that enhancing awareness and understanding of the risk of deliberate disease is essential for effective biological security. We first discuss the issue of ‘dual use’ in science and technology as it relates to disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Second, we review how scientist engagement with dual-use risks has been addressed in the context of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC). Third, we report on the development of an innovative awareness-raising tool, a cartoon series, that can be used for engaging life science stakeholders with BTWC issues.
