Altered processing of food stimuli in adolescents with loss of control eating
Loss of control eating (LOC) constitutes a common eating pathology in childhood and adolescence. Models developed for adult patients stress a biased processing of food-related stimuli as an important maintaining factor. To our knowledge, however, no EEG study to date investigated the processing of visual food stimuli in children or adolescents with LOC. Adolescents with at least one self-reported episode of LOC in the last four weeks and a matched control group completed a modified Go/NoGo task, with a numerical target or non-target stimulus being presented on one side of the screen and an irrelevant high-calorie food or neutral stimulus being presented on the opposite side. Mean P3 amplitudes were analyzed. In Go trials, the LOC group’s mean P3 amplitudes were comparable irrespective of distractor category, while for NoGo trials, mean P3 amplitudes were significantly higher when the distractor was a high-calorie food stimulus. This pattern was reversed in the control group. Results are interpreted in light of Gray’s reinforcement sensitivity theory. They might reflect altered processes of behavioral inhibition in adolescents with LOC upon confrontation with visual food stimuli
Accumulation of high magnitude acceleration events predicts cerebrovascular reactivity changes in female high school soccer athletes
Mitigating the effects of repetitive exposure to head trauma has become a major concern for the general population, given the growing body of evidence that even asymptomatic exposure to head accelerations is linked with increased risk for negative life outcomes and that risk increases as exposure is prolonged over many years. Among women's sports, soccer currently exhibits the highest growth in participation and reports the largest number of mild traumatic brain injuries annually, making female soccer athletes a relevant population in assessing the effects of repetitive exposure to head trauma. Cerebrovascular biomarkers may be useful in assessing the effects of repetitive head trauma, as these are thought to contribute directly to neurocognitive symptoms associated with mild traumatic brain injury. Here we use fMRI paired with a hypercapnic breath hold task along with monitoring of head acceleration events, to assess the relationship between cerebrovascular brain changes and exposure to repetitive head trauma over a season of play in female high school soccer athletes. We identified longitudinal changes in cerebrovascular reactivity that were significantly associated with prolonged accumulation to high magnitude (> 75th percentile) head acceleration events. Findings argue for active monitoring of athletes during periods of exposure to head acceleration events, illustrate the importance of collecting baseline (i.e., pre-exposure) measurements, and suggest modeling as a means of guiding policy to mitigate the effects of repetitive head trauma
Técnicas observacionais e a temática qualidade de vida: uma revisao integrativa
Today quality of life can be seen from several viewpoints. This quality emerges in situations lived and experienced by each individual. This phenomenon is connected to the circularity, interdependence and influence that the constituents of an area / region / environment have with each other. The objective was to describe the observational techniques that were used in nursing scientific production that addressed the quality of life issue. An integrative review of the literature was made. The corpus amounted to twelve articles. As a result, one can see, the emerging need for more research in nursing on quality of life using the technique of observation given that the subject is widely discussed nowadays in different spheresEn el contexto actual de la calidad de vida puede ser visto desde varios puntos de vista. Esta cualidad emerge en situaciones vividas y experimentadas por cada individuo. Este fenómeno está vinculado con la circularidad, la interdependencia y la influencia que los componentes de una zona, región o el medio ambiente tienen entre sÃ. Se tuvo como objetivo describir las técnicas de observación que se utilizaron en la producción cientÃfica de enfermerÃa que se dirigió a la cuestión de calidad de vida. Esta es la literatura, la revista de tipo integral. El corpus ascendió a doce artÃculos. Como resultado, se puede ver, la emergente necesidad de más investigación en enfermerÃa en la calidad de vida mediante la técnica de observación con el fin de que el tema es ampliamente discutido en la actualidad en diferentes espacios.No contexto atual a qualidade de vida pode ser percebida sob diversos enfoques. Esta qualidade emerge de situações vividas e experienciadas por cada indivÃduo. Teve-se como objetivo descrever as técnicas observacionais que foram utilizadas na produção cientÃfica da enfermagem que abordaram a temática qualidade de vida. Trata-se de pesquisa bibliográfica, do tipo revisão integrativa. O corpus de análise correspondeu a doze artigos. Combined Connectomics, MAPT Gene Expression, and Amyloid Deposition to Explain Regional Tau Deposition in Alzheimer Disease
Objective
We aimed to test whether region-specific factors, including spatial expression patterns of the tau-encoding gene MAPT and regional levels of amyloid positron emission tomography (PET), enhance connectivity-based modeling of the spatial variability in tau-PET deposition in the Alzheimer disease (AD) spectrum.
Methods
We included 685 participants (395 amyloid-positive participants within AD spectrum and 290 amyloid-negative controls) with tau-PET and amyloid-PET from 3 studies (Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, 18F-AV-1451-A05, and BioFINDER-1). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was obtained in healthy controls (n = 1,000) from the Human Connectome Project, and MAPT gene expression from the Allen Human Brain Atlas. Based on a brain-parcellation atlas superimposed onto all modalities, we obtained region of interest (ROI)-to-ROI functional connectivity, ROI-level PET values, and MAPT gene expression. In stepwise regression analyses, we tested connectivity, MAPT gene expression, and amyloid-PET as predictors of group-averaged and individual tau-PET ROI values in amyloid-positive participants.
Results
Connectivity alone explained 21.8 to 39.2% (range across 3 studies) of the variance in tau-PET ROI values averaged across amyloid-positive participants. Stepwise addition of MAPT gene expression and amyloid-PET increased the proportion of explained variance to 30.2 to 46.0% and 45.0 to 49.9%, respectively. Similarly, for the prediction of patient-level tau-PET ROI values, combining all 3 predictors significantly improved the variability explained (mean adjusted R2 range across studies = 0.118–0.148, 0.156–0.196, and 0.251–0.333 for connectivity alone, connectivity plus MAPT expression, and all 3 modalities combined, respectively).
Interpretation
Across 3 study samples, combining the functional connectome and molecular properties substantially enhanced the explanatory power compared to single modalities, providing a valuable tool to explain regional susceptibility to tau deposition in AD. ANN NEUROL 202
Zinc whisker growth from electroplated finishes – a review
Electroplated zinc finishes have been associated with the electronics industry for many years as a result of their excellent corrosion resistance and relatively low cost. They are normally applied onto ferrous products to provide corrosion protection in a range of different environments. However, the formation of spontaneously grown whiskers on zinc-electroplated components, which are capable of resulting in electrical shorting or other damaging effects, can be highly problematic for the reliability of long life electrical and electronic equipment. The growth of zinc whiskers has been identified as the cause of some electrical and electronic failures in telecommunications and aerospace-based applications, with consequences ranging from mild inconvenience to complete system failures. Investigators have been striving to address the problems induced by whisker growth since 1940s. However, most research effort has been focused on tin whiskers, especially following European Union environmental legislation that restricted the use of lead (Pb), which when alloyed with tin (3–10% by weight) provided effective tin whisker mitigation. Compared with tin whisker research, much less attention has been paid to zinc whiskers. A number of mechanisms to explain zinc whisker growth have been proposed, but none of them are widely accepted and some are in conflict with each other. The aim of this paper is to review the available literature in regard to zinc whiskers, to discuss the reported growth mechanisms, to evaluate the effect of deposition parameters and to explore potential mitigation methods. This paper presents a chronologically ordered review of zinc whisker-related studies from 1946 to 2013. Neurodegenerative changes in early- and late-onset cognitive impairment with and without brain amyloidosis
Background
A substantial number of patients clinically diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease do not harbor amyloid pathology. We analyzed the presence and extent of tau deposition and neurodegeneration in amyloid-positive (AD) and amyloid-negative (nonAD) ADNI subjects while also taking into account age of onset ( 65 years) as we expected that the emerging patterns could vary by age and presence or absence of brain amyloidosis.
Methods
One hundred and ten early-onset AD (EOAD), 121 EOnonAD, 364 late-onset AD (LOAD), and 175 LOnonAD mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia (DEM) subjects were compared to 291 ADNI amyloid-negative control subjects using voxel-wise regression in SPM12 with cluster-level family-wise error correction at pFWE < 0.05). A subset of these subjects also received 18F-flortaucipir scans and allowed for analysis of global tau burden.
Results
As expected, relative to LOAD, EOAD subjects showed more extensive neurodegeneration and tau deposition in AD-relevant regions. EOnonADMCI showed no significant neurodegeneration, while EOnonADDEM showed bilateral medial and lateral temporal, and temporoparietal hypometabolism. LOnonADMCI and LOnonADDEM showed diffuse brain atrophy and a fronto-temporo-parietal hypometabolic pattern. LOnonAD and EOnonAD subjects failed to show significant tau binding.
Conclusions
LOnonAD subjects show a fronto-temporal neurodegenerative pattern in the absence of tau binding, which may represent underlying hippocampal sclerosis with TDP-43, also known as limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy (LATE). The hypometabolic pattern observed in EOnonADDEM seems similar to the one observed in EOADMCI. Further investigation into the underlying etiology of EOnonAD is warranted
Orthorexic tendencies are linked with difficulties with emotion identification and regulation.
Background: Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is characterised by an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating and while it is not recognised as an eating disorder (or any disorder), current research is exploring similarities and differences with such disorders. The literature has shown that individuals with eating disorders have difficulties identifying and describing emotions (known as alexithymia) as well as regulating them. However no research to date has looked at whether people with orthorexic tendencies also suffer from difficulties with emotions. In this paper, we refer to people with orthorexic tendencies but do not assume that their healthy eating is at a pathological level needing clinical attention. Methods: The current study examined this by asking 196 healthy adults with an interest in healthy eating to complete four questionnaires to measure ON (ORTO-15 - reduced to ORTO-7CS), eating psychopathology (EAT-26), alexithymia (TAS-20) and emotion dysregulation (DERS-16). Results: We found that difficulties identifying and regulating emotions was associated with symptoms of ON, similar to what is found in other eating disorders. We suggest that ON behaviours may be used as a coping strategy in order to feel in control in these participants who have poor emotion regulation abilities. Conclusions: Our results show that individuals with ON tendencies may share similar difficulties with emotions compared to other eating disorders. While important, our results are limited by the way we measured ON behaviours and we recommend that further research replicate our findings once a better and more specific tool is developed and validated to screen for ON characteristics more accurately
