    Cosmic ray records in Antarctic meteorites

    The cosmogenic radionuclides Be(10), Al(26), and Mn(53) and noble gases were determined in more than 28 meteorites from Antarctica by nuclear analytical techniques and static mass spectrometry, respectively. The summarized results are listed. The concentrations of Al(26) and Mn(53) are normalized to the repective main target elements and given in dpm/kg Si sub eq and dpm/kg Fe. The errors stated include statistical as well as systematical errors. For noble gas concentrations estimated errors are 5% and for isotopic ratios 1.5%. Cosmic ray exposure ages T sub 21 were calculated by the noble gas concentrations and the terrestrial residence time (T) on the basis of the spallogenic nuclide Al(26). The suggested pairing of the LL6 chondrite RKPA 80238 and RKPA 80248 and the eucrites ALHA 76005 and ALHA 79017 is confirmed not only by the noble gas data but also by the concentrations of the spallation produced radionuclides. Futhermore, ALHA 80122, clasified as an H6 chondrite, has a noble gas pattern which suggest that this meteorite belongs to the ALHA 80111 shower

    I.V. LABETALOL IN THE TREATMENT OF HYPERTENSION FOLLOWING CORONARY-ARTERY SURGERY

    SUMMARY The cardiovascular effects of incremental fixed i.v. doses of labetalol were evaluated in 10 normovolaemic sedated patients presenting with hypertension and tachycardia in the early period after myocardial revas-cularizaoon. A first dose of 20 mg was sufficient to provoke a (P < 0.01) mean decrease in systolic (−9.3%), diastolic (−8.2%) and mean arterial (−7.9%) pressure (AP) and in the rate-pressure product (RPP) (−13.1%). The mean heart rate (HR) did not change significantly, but a linear correlation could be established between the change at 2 min and the value before injection (r = 0.73). A second dose of labetalol 40 mg given S min later did not decrease AP further, but a significant decrease in HR was noted. A marked difference in the individual response among patients was found as the range of effective total doses per kg body weight was 0.6-4.1 mg kg−1 (mean 2.2).     Spin-lattice relaxation of the nuclear spin system in p-type GaAs is studied using a three-stage experimental protocol including optical pumping and measuring the difference of the nuclear spin polarization before and after a dark interval of variable length. This method allows us to measure the spin-lattice relaxation time T1T_1 of optically pumped nuclei "in the dark", that is, in the absence of illumination. The measured T1T_1 values fall into the sub-second time range, being three orders of magnitude shorter than in earlier studied n-type GaAs. The drastic difference is further emphasized by magnetic-field and temperature dependences of T1T_1 in p-GaAs, showing no similarity to those in n-GaAs. This unexpected behavior is explained within a developed theoretical model involving quadrupole relaxation of nuclear spins, which is induced by electric fields within closely spaced donor-acceptor pairs.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    Adding Salt to an Aqueous Solution of t-Butanol: Is Hydrophobic Association Enhanced or Reduced?

    Recent neutron scattering experiments on aqueous salt solutions of amphiphilic t-butanol by Bowron and Finney [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 89}, 215508 (2002); J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 118}, 8357 (2003)] suggest the formation of t-butanol pairs, bridged by a chloride ion via O−H...Cl−{O}-{H}...{Cl}^- hydrogen-bonds, and leading to a reduced number of intermolecular hydrophobic butanol-butanol contacts. Here we present a joint experimental/theoretical study on the same system, using a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and nuclear magnetic relaxation measurements. Both theory and experiment clearly support the more intuitive scenario of an enhanced number of hydrophobic contacts in the presence of the salt, as it would be expected for purely hydrophobic solutes [J. Phys. Chem. B {\bf 107}, 612 (2003)]. Although our conclusions arrive at a structurally completely distinct scenario, the molecular dynamics simulation results are within the experimental errorbars of the Bowron and Finney work.Comment: 15 pages twocolumn revtex, 11 figure

    Spatial characterization of the magnetic field profile of a probe tip used in magnetic resonance force microscopy

    We have developed the experimental approach to characterize spatial distribution of the magnetic field produced by cantilever tips used in magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM). We performed MRFM measurements on a well characterized diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) film and mapped the 3D field profile produced by a Nd2Fe14B probe tip. Using our technique field profiles of arbitrarily shaped probe magnets can be imaged.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

    A suggested search for 207Pb nuclear Schiff moment in PbTiO3 ferroelectric

    We suggest two types of experiments, NMR and macroscopic magnetometry, with solid PbTiO3 to search for the nuclear Schiff moment of 207Pb. Both kinds of experiments promise substantial improvement over the presently achieved sensitivities. Statistical considerations show that the improvement of the current sensitivity can be up to 10 orders of magnitude for the magnetometry experiment and up to 6 orders of magnitude for the NMR experiment. Such significant enhancement is due to the strong internal electric field of the ferroelectric, as well as due to the possibility to cool the nuclear-spin subsystem in the compound down to nanokelvin temperatures.Comment: 4 pages; revised sensitivity estimate for NMR experimen

    Cosmogenic rare gases and 10-Be in a cross section of Knyahinya

    The concentrations of cosmogenic nuclides were studied as a function of shielding on samples from a cross section of the 293 kg main fragment of the L5 chondrite Knyahinya. The stone broke into two nearly symmetrical parts upon its fall in 1866. The planar cross section has diameters between 40 and 55 cm. He, Ne, and Ar were measured on about 20 samples by mass spectrometry and the 10-Be activities on aliquots of 10 selected samples were determined by AMS. The 10-Be data are presented and the abundances of spallogenic nuclides are compared with the model calculations reported by Reedy for spherical L chondrites.     Understanding the μ\muSR spectra of MnSi without magnetic polarons

    Transverse-field muon-spin rotation (μ\muSR) experiments were performed on a single crystal sample of the non-centrosymmetric system MnSi. The observed angular dependence of the muon precession frequencies matches perfectly the one of the Mn-dipolar fields acting on the muons stopping at a 4a position of the crystallographic structure. The data provide a precise determination of the magnetic dipolar tensor. In addition, we have calculated the shape of the field distribution expected below the magnetic transition temperature TCT_C at the 4a muon-site when no external magnetic field is applied. We show that this field distribution is consistent with the one reported by zero-field μ\muSR studies. Finally, we present ab initio calculations based on the density-functional theory which confirm the position of the muon stopping site inferred from transverse-field μ\muSR. In view of the presented evidence we conclude that the μ\muSR response of MnSi can be perfectly and fully understood without invoking a hypothetical magnetic polaron state.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figure
