    In 193, the Connecticut State Department of Education received federal support for the activities of nine existing Family Resource Centers (FRC) and for funding new FRCs. The FRCs were based on the premise that many childhood and adolescent problems can be prevented by strengthening effective family management practices and establishing a continuum of child care and support services linked to public schools or located in public school buildings. This report details the evaluation of the 18 school-based/linked FRCs, describing their structure and contexts, examining evidence of service use, and presenting information on the effects of the FRCs on families and schools. Chapter 1 presents the service delivery model, describes the core services, and describes the evaluation plan. Chapters 2 through 5 summarize findings related to the following areas: (1) structure of core services, service delivery, financial supports, and staffing characteristics; (2) processes used to deliver services in a school-based/linked setting, including collaborative arrangements; (3) use of FRC services; (4) impacts of FRCs on families and children; and (5) impact of FRCs on schools. Chapter 6 discuses the patterns observed that reflect the implementation of the FRC service delivery model and implications for delivering comprehensive integrated services to families. This chapter also presents recommendations for sustaining the school-based/linked delivery model of the FRCs at meaningful levels. Chapter 7 presents profiles of the 18 FRCs, including their setting, service delivery arrangements, primary collaborative arrangements, and the school relationship.     This special issue of Forest Phytophthoras serves as part of the proceedings from the Sixth Sudden Oak Death Science Symposium held June 21 - 23, 2016 at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco, CA, USA. The symposium marked almost 16 years to the day that David Rizzo (UC Davis) and Matteo Garbelotto (UC Berkeley) identified the cause of sudden oak death to be a previously unknown Phytophthora species, later named Phytophthora ramorum. Many of the approximately 200 participants at the conference have dedicated the past 15 years, a large portion of their life’s work, to protect U.S. forests from this new invasive pathogen

    Abortion policy implementation: Understanding the availability of abortion services in the United States

    This study examines five factors predicted to be related to abortion, and assesses their influence on the availability and use of abortion services. A policy implementation framework is used to explore, conceptualize and analyze the extent to which these factors may have important effects on abortion services. Availability and use of abortion services are viewed as measures of the implementation of the 1973 Supreme Court rulings on abortion. State level data are used to investigate the extent to which the predicted factors influence abortion services. This study reveals that many factors associated with the issue of abortion work together to influence abortion policy implementation. It demonstrates that availability and use of abortion services are conceptually distinct measures of policy implementation, and that the demand for abortion is separate from how readily services are available. Availability is affected by differing views concerning the family, economic status of women, pressures of social movements and availability of physicians. Use of abortion services is affected by the social and political climate primarily through availability of abortion providers, along with existing characteristics of the health care system and with the level of demand for abortion. In order to increase the availability of abortion services, it is recommended that the social and political climate of a community be assessed in conjunction with the limitations associated with the availability of health care services

    Positioning adolescents in literacy teaching and learning

    Secondary literacy instruction often happens to adolescents rather than with them. To disrupt this trend, we collaborated with 12th-grade “literacy mentors” to reimagine literacy teaching and learning with 10th-grade mentees in a public high school classroom. We used positioning theory as an analytic tool to (a) understand how mentors positioned themselves and how we positioned them and (b) examine the literacy practices that enabled and constrained the mentor position. We found that our positioning of mentors as collaborators was taken up in different and sometimes unexpected ways as a result of the multiple positions available to them and institutional-level factors that shaped what literacy practices were and were not negotiable. We argue that future collaborations with youth must account for the rights and duties of all members of a classroom community, including how those rights and duties intersect, merge, or come into conflict within and across practices.The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This research was supported by a Faculty Research Award from the School of Education at Boston University.     Temporal Regulation of Foregut Development by HTZ-1/H2A.Z and PHA-4/FoxA

    The histone variant H2A.Z is evolutionarily conserved and plays an essential role in mice, Drosophila, and Tetrahymena. The essential function of H2A.Z is unknown, with some studies suggesting a role in transcriptional repression and others in activation. Here we show that Caenorhabditis elegans HTZ-1/H2A.Z and the remodeling complex MYS-1/ESA1–SSL-1/SWR1 synergize with the FoxA transcription factor PHA-4 to coordinate temporal gene expression during foregut development. We observe dramatic genetic interactions between pha-4 and htz-1, mys-1, and ssl-1. A survey of transcription factors reveals that this interaction is specific, and thus pha-4 is acutely sensitive to reductions in these three proteins. Using a nuclear spot assay to visualize HTZ-1 in living embryos as organogenesis proceeds, we show that HTZ-1 is recruited to foregut promoters at the time of transcriptional onset, and this recruitment requires PHA-4. Loss of htz-1 by RNAi is lethal and leads to delayed expression of a subset of foregut genes. Thus, the effects of PHA-4 on temporal regulation can be explained in part by recruitment of HTZ-1 to target promoters. We suggest PHA-4 and HTZ-1 coordinate temporal gene expression by modulating the chromatin environment

    Phytophthora pathogens threaten rare habitats and conservation plantings

    Phytophthora pathogens are damaging native wildland vegetation including plants in restoration areas and botanic gardens. The infestations threaten some plants already designated as endangered and degrade high-value habitats. Pathogens are being introduced primarily via container plant nursery stock and, once established, they can spread to adjacent areas where plant species not previously exposed to pathogens may become infected. We review epidemics in California – caused by the sudden oak death pathogen Phytophthoraramorum Werres, De Cock & Man in ‘t Veld and the first USA detections of P. tentaculata Kröber & Marwitz, which occurred in native plant nurseries and restoration areas – as examples to illustrate these threats to conservation plantings

    The manganese-stabilizing protein is required for photosystem II assembly/stability and photoautotrophy in higher plants

    Interfering RNA was used to suppress the expression of two genes that encode the manganese-stabilizing protein of photosystem II in Arabidopsis thaliana, MSP-1 (encoded by psbO-1, At5g66570), and MSP-2 (encoded by psbO-2, At3g50820). A phenotypic series of transgenic plants was recovered that expressed high, intermediate, and low amounts of these two manganese-stabilizing proteins. Chlorophyll fluorescence induction and decay analyses were performed. Decreasing amounts of expressed protein led to the progressive loss of variable fluorescence and a marked decrease in the fluorescence quantum yield (F v/Fm) in both the absence and the presence of dichloromethylurea. This result indicated that the amount of functional photosystem II reaction centers was compromised in the plants that exhibited intermediate and low amounts of the manganese-stabilizing proteins. An analysis of the decay of the variable fluorescence in the presence of dichlorophenyldimethylurea indicated that charge recombination between Q A- and the S2 state of the oxygen-evolving complex was seriously retarded in the plants that expressed low amounts of the manganese-stabilizing proteins. This may have indicated a stabilization of the S2 state in the absence of the extrinsic component. Immunological analysis of the photosystem II protein complement indicated that significant losses of the CP47, CP43, and D1 proteins occurred upon the loss of the manganese-stabilizing proteins. This indicated that these extrinsic proteins were required for photosystem II core assembly/stability. Additionally, although the quantity of the 24-kDa extrinsic protein was only modestly affected by the loss of the manganese-stabilizing proteins, the 17-kDa extrinsic protein dramatically decreased. The control proteins ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase and cytochrome f were not affected by the loss of the manganese-stabilizing proteins; the photosystem I PsaB protein, however, was significantly reduced in the low expressing transgenic plants. Finally, it was determined that the transgenic plants that expressed low amounts of the manganese-stabilizing proteins could not grow photoautotrophically. © 2005 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc

    An Experimental Comparison of Stand Management Approaches to Sudden Oak Death: Prevention vs. Restoration

    Many coastal forests stretching from central California to southwest Oregon are threatened or have been impacted by the invasive forest pathogen Phytophthora ramorum, the cause of sudden oak death. We analyzed a set of stand-level forest treatments aimed at preventing or mitigating disease impacts on stand composition, biomass, and fuels using a before–after-control-intervention experiment with a re-evaluation after 5 years. We compared the effects of restorative management for invaded stands and preventative treatments for uninvaded forests with two stand-level experiments. The restorative treatments contrasted two approaches to mastication, hand-crew thinning, and thinning with pile burning with untreated controls replicated at three distinct sites (N = 30), while the preventative treatments were limited to hand-crew thinning (N = 10) conducted at a single site. Half of the restoration treatments had basal sprouts removed 2 and 4 years after treatment. All treatments significantly reduced stand density and increased average tree size without significantly decreasing total basal area, both immediately and 5 years after treatments. Preventative treatments did not reduce the basal area or density of timber species not susceptible to P. ramorum, suggesting the relative dominance of these species increased in accordance with host removal. Follow-up basal sprout removal in the restoration experiment appears to maintain treatment benefits for average tree size and may be associated with small decreases in stand density 5 years after initial treatment. Our study demonstrates that for at least 5 years, a range of common stand management practices can improve forest conditions threatened or impacted by sudden oak death
