    Left ventricular mass - a facade for left ventricular calcification

    Calcification overlying the left side of the heart on a chest radiograph may involve either the pericardium or, alternatively, the myocardium in association with a left ventricular aneurysm. Pericardial calcification was found primarily over the right-sided cardiac chambers and in the atrioventricular grooves, infrequently over the base of the left ventricle, and rarely over the apex of the left ventricle. When the left ventricle was involved, there was always more extensive calcification elsewhere in the pericardium. Myocardial calcification occurred predominantly in the apex of the left ventricle, although it was rarely confined to the posterior wall of the left ventricle. Isolated calcification in the region of the left ventricular apex, therefore, strongly suggests left ventricular aneurysm. Isolated idiopathic left ventricular calcification without any detectable abnormality is a rare phenomenon and found to be worth reporting

    Design and development of two degree of freedom model with PID controller for turning operation

    The objective is to develop a two degree of freedom model with PID controller for turning process to reduce regenerative chatter with the aim of improving productivity, quality of surface finish, tool life and reducing environmental noise caused by chatter. A system model consists of a workpiece subsystem and a cutting tool subsystem. The workpiece subsystem consists of mass, stiffness and damper. The cutting tool subsystem consists of mass, stiffness and damper. A Piezo actuator and sensor was embedded into the tool holder. A Mechatronic system has been proposed and developed for reducing tool vibration in lathe tool during machining. It consists of electrical and mechanical components; the controller is designed to control the chatter that occurs between the tool and the workpiece. The controller is used to send a feedback to the actuator. The controller is designed so that it suppresses the settling time and dampens the tool. The effective cutting stiffness and effective cutting damping are modeled as a spring and damper during machining. The original response of the system is modeled using transfer function method. Their output responses were obtained using Mat lab software

    The new generation cellular phones have multi-functional capabilities such as imaging, video, audio recording and messaging in addition to providing internet access. In this paper we present an innovative application in the field of remote health monitoring using N900 Nokia tablet, which will serve as a communicating device between the patient and healthcare providers like doctors and nurses. Patients with arthritis require regular objective monitoring of their affected joints by healthcare providers requiring that patients report their subjective pain levels to their physicians. The application has a patient's module allowing the patient to select their pain level on a sliding scale from a graphical representation of various human joints and send this as an SMS to the doctor. The healthcare providers can review the pain level, save it to a database and make an informed decision about possible recommendations based on the data received via SMS. The doctor's module allows the doctor to capture all the attributes of an affected joint discretely using the graphical representation of the joints and associated dialog boxes. The complete Graphical User Interface (GUI) development and data base design are discussed and test cases are presented. We plan to evaluate the application in a real healthcare environment for usability, its role in improving patient satisfaction and health outcomes

    Development and Evaluation of Curcumin Loaded Nanoparticles for Treatment of Diabetes

    A nanometer is one billionth of a metre, hence nanotechnology is an intersection of science, engineering, and technology that works with structures and materials at the nanoscale scale, often in the range of 1 to 100 nanometers. Materials frequently display distinctive and innovative features at this scale that are distinct from those at the macroscopic or even microscopic levels. Nanotechnology is the manipulation, design, and control of materials and devices at the nanoscale to produce new products, technologies, and applications. Nanotechnology is essential to the development of tailored medication delivery systems, imaging agents, and diagnostic instruments in medicine. It offers the promise for more targeted treatments that are also less likely to cause negative effects. Since ancient times, turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) has been widely used as a spice and a remedy. Curcumin, a polyphenol that aids in the prevention and management of neurological, pulmonary, cardiovascular, metabolic, inflammatory, and autoimmune illnesses as well as some malignancies, is the primary active component of turmeric. Curcumin does have certain disadvantages, though, including limited water solubility, poor absorption, rapid metabolism, rapid systemic elimination, inadequate bioavailability subpar pharmacokinetics, low stability, and subpar penetration targeting effectiveness. A typical approach is to encapsulate curcumin in nanocarriers for targeted distribution to get over these disadvantages. Concerns have been raised about the degradation of nanocarrier products. In this study, curcumin nanoparticles and nanocurcumin were created without the aid of nanocarriers. To do this, raw turmeric rhizome was soxhlet extracted to obtain curcumin. The stock solutions of various curcumin concentrations made in dichloromethane were sonicated for varying lengths of time and included in boiling water at various flow rates. With 5.00 mg/mL of stock solution concentration, 0.10 mL/min flow rate, and 30 minutes of sonication, an average particle size of 82 04 nm was produced. Particle size seems to decline with sonication time but tends to increase with flow rate and curcumin content in the stock solution. Although nanocurcumins are amorphous, X-ray diffraction reveals crisp and powerful diffraction peaks for curcumin, suggesting its integrity and high crystallinity. The presence of all the functional groups of curcumin in nanocurcumin is confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy spectra. Images obtained using transmission and scanning electron microscopy display the morphology of completely spherical objects

    Study on the structural, morphological and optical properties of RF-sputtered dysprosium-doped barium tungstate thin films.

    Barium tungstate films with different Dy3+ doping concentrations, namely 0 wt.%, 1 wt.%, 3 wt.% and 5 wt.%, are deposited on cleaned quartz substrate by radio frequency magnetron sputtering technique and the prepared films are annealed at a temperature of 700{deg}C. The structural, morphological and optical properties of the annealed films are studied using techniques such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. XRD analysis shows that all the films are well-crystallized in nature with a monoclinic barium tungstate phase. The presence of characteristic modes of the tungstate group in the Raman spectra supports the formation of the barium tungstate phase in the films. Scanning electron microscopic images of the films present a uniform dense distribution of well-defined grains with different sizes. All the doped films present a broad emission in the 390-500 nm region and its intensity increases up to 3 wt.% and thereafter decreases due to usual concentration quenching

    Spontaneous Tumor Lysis Syndrome in a Case of Multiple Myeloma

    We describe a case of a 40-year-old male patient who was found to have multiple myeloma with spontaneous tumour lysis syndrome (TLS), following a compression fracture of the L–2 vertebrae. Multiple myeloma was confirmed by bone marrow analysis and the M–band on serum protein electrophoresis. Hyperuricaemia (26.2 mg/dL), hyperkalaemia (> 7.0 mEq/L), hyperphosphatemia (16.2 mg of phosphorus/dL), normocalcemia and acute kidney injury, prior to anticancer treatment suggested spontaneous TLS. Inciting events for tumour lysis, such as chemotherapy, dehydration and exposure to steroids were absent. Patient received hydration, hypourecemic drugs and haemodialysis. This case report highlights the rare presentation of multiple myeloma with spontaneous TLS
