Modeling and control of a plastic film manufacturing web process
This paper is concerned with the modelling of aplastic film manufacturing process and the development and implementation of a model-based Cross-Directional (CD) controller. The model is derived from first-principles and some empirical relationships. The final validated nonlinear model could provide a useful off-line platform for developing control and monitoring algorithms.A new controller is designed which has a similar structureto that of Internal Model Control (IMC) with the addition ofan observer whose gain is designed to minimise process andmodel mis-match. The observer gain is obtained by solving amulti-objective optimisation problem through the application of a genetic algorithm. The controller is applied to the nonlinear model and simulation results are presented demonstrating improvements that can be achieved by the proposed controller over two existing CD controllers
A Spitzer View of the Young Open Cluster NGC 2264
We have performed mid-IR photometry of the young open cluster NGC 2264 using
the images obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC and MIPS instruments
and present a normalized classification scheme of young stellar objects in
various color-color diagrams to make full use of the information from
multicolor photometry. These results are compared with the classification
scheme based on the slope of the spectral energy distribution (SED).
From the spatial distributions of Class I and II stars, we have identified
two subclusterings of Class I objects in the CONE region of Sung et al. The
disked stars in the other star forming region S MON are mostly Class II
objects. These three regions show a distinct difference in the fractional
distribution of SED slopes as well as the mean value of SED slopes. The
fraction of stars with primordial disks is nearly flat between log m = 0.2 --
-0.5, and that of transition disks is very high for solar mass stars. In
addition, we have derived a somewhat higher value of the primordial disk
fraction for NGC 2264 members located below the main pre-main sequence locus
(so-called BMS stars). This result supports the idea that BMS stars are young
stars with nearly edge-on disks. We have also found that the fraction of
primordial disks is very low near the most massive star S Mon and increases

Comparison of dynamic fatigue behavior between SiC whisker-reinforced composite and monolithic silicon nitrides
The dynamic fatigue behavior of 30 vol percent silicon nitride whisker-reinforced composite and monolithic silicon nitrides were determined as a function of temperature from 1100 to 1300 C in ambient air. The fatigue susceptibility parameter, n, decreased from 88.1 to 20.1 for the composite material, and from 50.8 to 40.4 for the monolithic, with increasing temperature from 1100 to 1300 C. A transition in the dynamic fatigue curve occurred for the composite material at a low stressing rate of 2 MPa/min at 1300 C, resulting in a very low value of n equals 5.8. Fractographic analysis showed that glassy phases in the slow crack growth region were more pronounced in the composite compared to the monolithic material, implying that SiC whisker addition promotes the formation of glass rich phases at the grain boundaries, thereby enhancing fatigue. These results indicate that SiC whisker addition to Si3 N4 matrix substantially deteriorates fatigue resistance inherent to the matrix base material for this selected material system
Tying Knots With Communities: Youth Involvement in Scouting and Civic Engagement in Adulthood
Using data from a nationally representative sample of American adult males (N = 2,512), this study examines (a) whether duration of membership in the Boy Scouts of America is associated with adult civic engagement and (b) whether five characteristics of positive youth development (confidence, competence, connection, character, and caring) account for the relationship between duration of Scouting membership and adult civic engagement. The results from structural equation modeling indicate that duration of participation in Scouting is positively associated with four indicators of civic engagement: community involvement, community volunteering, community activism, and environmental activism. Among the five positive characteristics, confidence and competence were found to fully mediate the effects of Scouting on all four types of civic engagement, whereas the other three only to partly mediate the effects
Trapped Resonant Fermions above Superfluid Transition Temperature
We investigate trapped resonant fermions with unequal populations within the
local density approximation above the superfluid transition temperature. By
tuning the attractive interaction between fermions via Feshbach resonance, the
system evolves from weakly interacting fermi gas to strongly interacting fermi
gas, and finally becomes bose-fermi mixture. The density profiles of fermions
are examined and compared with experiments. We also point out the simple
relationships between the local density, the axial density, and the gas

Silicon nanowire devices
Transport measurements were carried out on 15–35 nm diameter silicon nanowires grown using SiH4 chemical vapor deposition via Au or Zn particle-nucleated vapor-liquid-solid growth at 440°C. Both Al and Ti/Au contacts to the wires were investigated. The wires, as produced, were essentially intrinsic, although Au nucleated wires exhibited a slightly higher conductance. Thermal treatment of the fabricated devices resulted in better electrical contacts, as well as diffusion of dopant atoms into the nanowires, and increased the nanowire conductance by as much as 10^4. Three terminal devices indicate that the doping of the wires is p type
Low-temperature ion beam mixing of Pt and Si markers in Ge
The mixing of Pt and Si marker atoms in Ge during 750-keV Xe irradiation was measured at temperatures between 6 and 500 K. The low-temperature measurements show that the mixing parameter for Pt is nearly twice that for Si. This result is in strong contradiction to the collisional theory of ion beam mixing. A weak temperature dependence in the mixing is found for both markers
Stochastic Resonance of a Flexible Chain Crossing over a Barrier
We study the stochastic resonance (SR) of a flexible polymer surmounting a
bistable-potential barrier. Due to the flexibility that can enhance crossing
rate and change chain conformations at the barrier, the SR behaviors manifest
many features of an entropic SR of a new kind, such as the power amplification
peaks at optimal chain lengths and elastic constants as well as the optimal
noise strengths. The pronounced peaks that emerge depending on the chain
lengths and conformation states suggest novel means of manipulating
biopolymers, such as efficient separation methods, within undulating channels.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure
