Coarse-graining the dynamics of coupled oscillators
We present an equation-free computational approach to the study of the
coarse-grained dynamics of {\it finite} assemblies of {\it non-identical}
coupled oscillators at and near full synchronization. We use coarse-grained
observables which account for the (rapidly developing) correlations between
phase angles and oscillator natural frequencies. Exploiting short bursts of
appropriately initialized detailed simulations, we circumvent the derivation of
closures for the long-term dynamics of the assembly statistics.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let
Microstructure and superconducting properties of hot isostatically pressed MgB2
Bulk samples of MgB2 have been formed by hot isostatic pressing (HIPping) of
commercial powder at 100MPa and 950=B0C. The resulting material is 100% dense
with a sharp superconducting transition at 37.5K. Microstructural studies have
indicated the presence of small amounts of second phases within the material,
namely MgO and B rich compositions, probably MgB4. Magnetisation measurements
performed at 20K have revealed values of Jc=1.3 x 106A/cm2 at zero field, and
9.3 x 105A/cm2 at 1T. Magneto optical (MO) studies have shown direct evidence
for the superconducting homogeneity and strong intergranular current flow in

UBVI Surface Photometry of the Spiral Galaxy NGC 300 in the Sculptor Group
We present UBVI surface photometry for 20.'5 X 20.'5 area of a late-type
spiral galaxy NGC 300. In order to understand the morphological properties and
luminosity distribution characteristics of NGC 300, we have derived isophotal
maps, surface brightness profiles, ellipticity profiles, position angle
profiles, and color profiles. By merging the I-band data of our surface
brightness measurements with those of Boeker et al. (2002) based on Hubble
Space Telescope observations, we have made combined I-band surface brightness
profiles for the region of 0."02 < r < 500" and decomposed the profiles into

Renminbi Internationalisation: Precedents and Implications
While it is commonly assumed that there are no known precedents against which to benchmark the internationalisation of the Renminbi (RMB), this paper argues that the PRCs own development experience provides a useful perspective on the internationalisation debate. In particular it indicates that lessons can be learnt from both the successes and the shortcomings of efforts to internationalise the RMB in the 1970s. During this period state-owned banks in Hong Kong played a central role in mobilising finance for foreign trade. Access to Hong Kong’s developed financial institutions allowed the PRC to maximise receipts from foreign trade as well as minimise the risks of undue swings in capital flows. The paper shows that although China no longer faces foreign exchange scarcity, economic reforms have not yet resolved vulnerabilities in China’s financial institutions and as such Hong Kong’s role in mitigating the risk of undue capital swings remains
Invisible Higgs and Scalar Dark Matter
In this proceeding, we show that when we combined WMAP and the most recent
results of XENON100, the invisible width of the Higgs to scalar dark matter is
negligible(<10%), except in a small region with very light dark matter (< 10
GeV) not yet excluded by XENON100 or around 60 GeV where the ratio can reach
50% to 60%. The new results released by the Higgs searches of ATLAS and CMS set

ATP-dependent DNA binding, unwinding, and resection by the Mre11/Rad50 complex
ATP-dependent DNA end recognition and nucleolytic processing are central functions of the Mre11/Rad50 (MR) complex in DNA double-strand break repair. However, it is still unclear how ATP binding and hydrolysis primes the MR function and regulates repair pathway choice in cells. Here, Methanococcus jannaschii MR-ATP gamma S-DNA structure reveals that the partly deformed DNA runs symmetrically across central groove between two ATP gamma S-bound Rad50 nucleotide-binding domains. Duplex DNA cannot access the Mre11 active site in the ATP-free full-length MR complex. ATP hydrolysis drives rotation of the nucleotide-binding domain and induces the DNA melting so that the substrate DNA can access Mre11. Our findings suggest that the ATP hydrolysis-driven conformational changes in both DNA and the MR complex coordinate the melting and endonuclease activity.1120Ysciescopu
Single Stranded DNA Translocation Through A Nanopore: A Master Equation Approach
We study voltage driven translocation of a single stranded (ss) DNA through a
membrane channel. Our model, based on a master equation (ME) approach,
investigates the probability density function (pdf) of the translocation times,
and shows that it can be either double or mono-peaked, depending on the system
parameters. We show that the most probable translocation time is proportional
to the polymer length, and inversely proportional to the first or second power
of the voltage, depending on the initial conditions. The model recovers
experimental observations on hetro-polymers when using their properties inside
the pore, such as stiffness and polymer-pore interaction.Comment: 7 pages submitted to PR
Onset of dendritic flux avalanches in superconducting films
We report a detailed comparison of experimental data and theoretical
predictions for the dendritic flux instability, believed to be a generic
behavior of type-II superconducting films. It is shown that a thermo-magnetic
model published very recently [Phys. Rev. B 73, 014512 (2006)] gives an
excellent quantitative description of key features like the instability onset
(first dendrite appearance) magnetic field, and how the onset field depends on
both temperature and sample size. The measurements were made using
magneto-optical imaging on a series of different strip-shaped samples of MgB2.
Excellent agreement is also obtained by reanalyzing data previously published
