Control and operation of a new 8/6-pole doubly salient permanent-magnet motor drive
This paper proposes a new 8/6-pole doubly salient permanent-magnet (DSPM) motor drive, which offers the advantages of higher power density, higher efficiency, and wider speed range. The corresponding control and operation of the motor drive are presented. A variable proportional-integral (PI) controller combined with bang-bang control for the DSPM motor drive is developed. Two operation modes, namely, four-phase and two-phase operation modes, are proposed for the 8/6-pole DSPM motor drive. The drive system is implemented and tested. The results show that the developed control scheme can operate the DSPM motor properly, and the DSPM motor drive offers high efficiency over wide power range and good dynamic performance. Furthermore, the two-phase operation mode of the 8/6-pole DSPM motor offers the possibility of eliminating the torque ripple of the motor drive.published_or_final_versio

Constructing power system restoration strategies
System restoration is an integral part of the overall defense system against catastrophic outages. The nature of system restoration problem involves status assessment, optimization of generation capability and load pickup. The optimization problem needs to take into numerous practical considerations and, therefore, it cannot be formulated as one single optimization problem. The other critical consideration for the development of decision support tools is its generality, i.e., the tools should be portable from a system to another with minimal customization. This presentation will provide a comprehensive methodology for construction of system restoration strategies. The strategy adopted by each power system differs, depending on the system characteristics and policies. A new method based on the concept of "generic restoration milestones" and "generic restoration actions" has been developed. A specific restoration strategy can be synthesized by a combination of the milestones and actions based on the actual system conditions. Assessment of Environmental Demands of Age-Friendly Communities from Perspectives of Different Residential Groups: A Case of Wuhan, China
Age-friendly communities (AFCs) are an important measure for fostering active aging. The key to achieving an age-friendly living environment is to construct or renovate it according to the residentsā demands. To date, very few studies have attempted to delve into the AFCsā environmental demand from different groupsā perspectives. Based on the theory of place attachment, the aim of this paper is to explore the demand diversity of different groups for the AFC environment. This study employs the nonparametric test and the Ordinal Priority Approach (OPA) to investigate the demands from the residentsā perspectives, and is enhanced by incorporating expertsā opinions. The empirical analysis shows that residents have a high level of demand for the physical environment (indoor and outdoor) and social environment (community services and social participation). At the same time, experts advocate the importance of using digital technologies to support people aged 45ā65 who have higher requirements for a community environment than older adults. The findings also show that other backgrounds, such as gender, living arrangements, and year of the community establishment, lead to different demands. However, the impact of residentsā education level, occupation, income, and self-care ability on the environmental demands is low. Based on the research findings, the paper provides some practical suggestions for the future design and development of AFCs
A safety warning algorithm based on axis aligned bounding box method to prevent onsite accidents of mobile construction machineries
Mobile construction machineries are accident-prone on a dynamic construction site, as the site environment is constantly changing and continuous safety monitoring by human beings is impossible. These accidents usually happen in the form of machinery overturning or collapsing into risk areas, including the foundation pit, slopes, or soft soil area. Therefore, preventing mobile construction machineries from entering risk areas is the key. However, currently, there is a lack of practical safety management techniques to achieve this. Utilizing a wireless sensor device to collect the location information of mobile construction machineries, this research develops a safety warning algorithm to prevent the machineries moving into risk area and reduces onsite overturning or collapsing accidents. A modified axis aligned bounding box method is proposed according to the movement patterns of mobile construction machineries, and the warning algorithm is developed based on the onsite safety management regulations. The algorithm is validated in a real case simulation when machinery enters the warning zone. The simulation results showed that the overall algorithm combining the location sensing technology and the modified bounding box method could detect risk and give warnings in a timely manner. This algorithm can be implemented for the safety monitoring of mobile construction machineries in daily onsite management
Positron-annihilation study of compensation defects in InP
Positron-annihilation lifetime and positron-annihilation Doppler-broadening (PADB) spectroscopies have been employed to investigate the formation of vacancy-type compensation defects in n-type undoped liquid encapsulated Czochrolski grown InP, which undergoes conduction-type conversions under high temperature annealing. N-type InP becomes p-type semiconducting by short time annealing at 700Ā°C, and then turns into n-type again after further annealing but with a much higher resistivity. Long time annealing at 950Ā°C makes the material semi-insulating. Positron lifetime measurements show that the positron average lifetime Ļ av increases from 245 ps to a higher value of 247 ps for the first n-type to p-type conversion and decreases to 240 ps for the ensuing p-type to n-type conversion. The value of Ļ av increases slightly to 242 ps upon further annealing and attains a value of 250 ps under 90 h annealing at 950Ā°C. These results together with those of PADB measurements are explained by the model proposed in our previous study. The correlation between the characteristics of positron annihilation and the conversions of conduction type indicates that the formation of vacancy-type defects and the progressive variation of their concentrations during annealing are related to the electrical properties of the bulk InP material. The proposed decision support tool has been validated with cases based on a simplified Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) 200-Bus system and Hawaiian Electric Company system.
