Psicologia e potere in "Im Westen nichts Neues". Una lettura del romanzo di Remarque a partire da Freud

    Get PDF
In 1915, a few months after the outbreak of the 1st World War, Sigmund Freud writes the essay "Zeitgemäßes über Krieg und Tod", in which he reflects about the reason why war is still possible in a cultural advanced society like the Western one, and about the relation of modernity with the problem of “evil”, violence and death. This article takes its cue from this essay in order to analyse Erich Maria Remarque's novel "Im Westen nichts Neues" (1928-29) from an innovative point of view. Remarque himself argues in many interviews and articles that his book should neither be considered a historical report about the 1st World War nor merely an antiwar-novel about the dramatic experience of a lost generation, but rather a true psychological novel. As a matter of fact, "Im Westen nichts Neues" tells about the “human all too human” mechanisms of violence and power through an understated representation of the trauma of a generation which was thrown into a sort of “state of exception”, a state situated simultaneously outside and inside civil society. The essay aims to illustrate how Freud and Remarque take a very similar perspective in their works about the Great War when considering the complex relation between culture and war, civilisation and violence, psychology and power in Western modern society

Is urinary incontinence associated with sedentary behaviour in older women? Analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common geriatric syndrome associated with physical and cognitive impairments. The association between type of UI and sedentary behaviour (SB) has not been explored. AIM: To determine association between moderate-severe UI, or any stress UI (SUI) or any urgency UI (UUI) and SB in community-dwelling older women. METHODS: Women aged 60 and over from the 2005-2006 cycle of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) with objectively measured (accelerometer) and self-reported SB and UI data were selected. Multivariate models exploring association between moderate-severe UI and SB, or SUI and SB, or UUI and SB were analysed using logistic regression adjusted for factors associated with UI. RESULTS: In the overall sample of 459 older women, 23.5% reported moderate-severe UI, 50.5% reported any SUI and 41.4% reported any UUI. In bivariate analysis objectively measured proportion of time in SB was associated with moderate-severe UI and UUI (p = 0.014 and p = 0.047) but not SUI. Average duration of SB bouts in those with moderate-severe UI or any SUI was no longer than older women reporting no continence issues, but it was significantly (19%) longer in older women with any UUI (mean difference 3.2 minutes; p = 0.001). Self-reported SB variables were not associated with any type of UI. Multivariate analysis showed an association between UUI and a longer average duration of SB bouts (OR = 1.05, 95% CI = 1.01-1.09, p = 0.006) but no association with moderate-severe UI or SUI. CONCLUSION: UUI was significantly associated with increased average duration of SB bouts in community-dwelling older women. The importance of objective measurement of SB is highlighted and suggests that decreasing time in prolonged sitting may be a target intervention to reduce UUI. Future studies are required to further explore the association between SB and incontinence

    Flow-Sensitive Type-Based Heap Cloning (Artifact)

This artifact contains our implementation of a new flow-sensitive type-based points-to analysis, described in "Flow-Sensitive Type-Based Heap Cloning" by Mohamad Barbar, Yulei Sui, and Shiping Chen (ECOOP 2020). This analysis performs heap cloning based on C and C++ types rather than calling contexts. Packaged as a Docker image, the artifact allows users to reproduce the claims made in the "Evaluation" section of the associated paper (Section 5.2) and to build and analyse arbitrary software

    A Grammar Sketch of Kwaraqae

A Grammar Sketch of Kwaraqae is a synchronic linguistic analysis of the Kwaraqae language, one of sixty-three languages which are part of the North Malaita dialect chain in the Solomon Islands. The data was collected at the University of Waikato from urban dwelling Kwaraqae speakers. Although some work has already been done with this language (Deck, 1934, Walter, 1931), the frameworks of analysis and interpretation from these projects are now out-dated, and consequently not as useful for Linguistic Typologists working with Oceanic languages, or those linguists investigating specific language features such as metathesis (Sohn, 1980; Pawley, 1982; Blevins & Garrett, 1998; Baird, 2002; Heinz, 2004). This thesis has addressed both of these issues by firstly recording fresh data, and secondly, by the application of contemporary linguistic descriptive and typological theory and practices to the data. The description sketches the phonological system which has bilabial and palatal glides, labio-velar stops, a basic syllable shape of (C)V(V)(C), and complex syllable transformations such as metathesis and segment deletion which are often combined. Kwaraqae tends towards an isolating agglutinative typology. When constituents are marked, this occurs on the phrasal head. The basic order of the language is SVO. The nominal system displays the alienable /inalienable semantic distinction frequently found in Oceanic languages, a small closed sub-class being locative in function. The verbal system includes inherently transitive and intransitive verbs, where valence is increased by affixation, and decreased by reduplication, although not all verbs fit this pattern. There are intransitive verbs for which a transitive counterpart could not be elicited, and transitive verbs where the valence changing affixes appear to have become fossilised on the verb. Transitive verbs are often, though not always, indexed for their direct objects. Aspect is prominent in Kwaraqae, and is expressed in the verb phrase by an imperfective, a completive and/or a terminal marker. There is a marker of temporal immediacy, and a large group of free form verbal modifiers, all of which occur in the verb phrase. Fronting of subjects and direct objects is a frequent structure in clauses

Access to Political Rights in Switzerland: Critique of the Naturalisation Process as a Source of Exclusion

    Get PDF
In this article, we analyse and discuss the legal criteria granting access to facilitated naturalisation in Switzer- land. Among the possible legal criteria, marriage to a Swiss citizen as a criterion for obtaining citizenship is em- blematic of the conservative political background in this country. It is also influenced by gendered stereotypes within the law itself and its application. We argue in fa- vour of a critical approach to the law in order to avoid the erasure of categories of individuals who are relegated to society’s margins. In a healthy democracy and judicial system, the law ought to be designed so as to avoid repro- ducing exclusionary bias. In this regard, we also discuss why acceding to citizenship is a prerequisite for exercis- ing one’s political rights and thus, achieving inclusion in Switzerland

The essential oils and the phytochemicals of the rhizomes of Kaempferia rotunda cultivated in Malaysia and Indonesia have been studied. Hydrodistillation of the fresh rhizomes of K. rotunda gave 0.09% and 0.23% oils respectively. These oils were analyzed by GC (Kovats Indices) and GC-MS. The main constituents found in the rhizome oil of Malaysia were bornyl acetate (9.6%), benzyl benzoate (8.4%) and camphor (5.6%), while the rhizome oil from Indonesia was rich in benzyl benzoate (87.7%) and n-pentadecane (4.2%). Extractions by soxhlet apparatus were carried out on the dried samples to get the crude extracts. Fractionation and purification on the crude extracts resulted in the isolation of three new cyclohexane oxides and ten known compounds, comprising of cyclohexane oxides, esters, carboxylic acid, labdane diterpene, and flavonoids. Two new compounds identified as 2- (benzoyloxymethyl)phenyl (3-O-acetyl)-ß-glucopyranoside and 3-debenzoylrotepoxide A, together with seven known compounds, crotepoxide, 4- benzoyloxymethyl-3,8-dioxatricyclo[5.1.0.02,4]octane-5,6-diol 5-acetate, 1,6- desoxypipoxide, curcumrinol C, 2'-hydroxy-4,4',6'-trimethoxychalcone and naringenin 4',7-dimethyl ether were isolated from the Malaysian species, while a new compound identified as 3-acetoxy-2-benzoyloxy-1-(benzoyloxymethyl)-cyclohexa- 4,6-diene with the seven known compounds namely crotepoxide, 4- benzoyloxymethyl-3,8-dioxatricyclo[5.1.0.02,4]octane-5,6-diol 5-acetate, 1,6- desoxypipoxide, 6-acetylzeylenol, trans-docosyl ferulate, benzyl benzoate and benzoic acid were isolated from the Indonesian species. The structures of all compounds were established based on spectral studies using MS, IR, UV and NMR spectroscopies. Naringenin 4',7-dimethyl ether, curcumrinol C, trans-docosyl ferulate, and benzoic acid were found for the first time from K. rotunda and also the genus of Kaempferia. Antibacterial and antioxidant screening assays using discdiffusion method and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) method, respectively were carried out on the crude extracts and essential oils. The crude extracts and essential oils of K. rotunda from Malaysia and Indonesia did not show activities on antibacterial and antioxidant assay
