The state of sustainable investments in key emerging markets: synthesis report

    Get PDF
The report is intended as a summary and synthesis of country reports on the state of sustainable investing in key emerging markets, namely China, India, Brazil and Turkey. In general, the authors have defined sustainable investments as investments that incorporate environmental (E), social(S) and governance (G) factors into the investment processes. The reports primarily investigate sustainable investments through the supply of financial capital to publicly listed firms in the form of equity investments through the stock markets, using strategies that incorporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks into the investment process, with a long-term perspective. These investments can be purposefully ESG-inclusive and marketed as such (theme-based or labelled), or they can include ESG factors somehow in the processes without explicitly referring to sustainability-related factors. The reports also consider the supply of financial capital in various classes and forms to listed and privately held firms with a consideration of the investment’s impact on economic and social development or on investors’ values

Further reports have been added to the series covering Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, and Turkey. This Issue Brief 's the summary version of the report, “Sustainable Investment in Turkey,

FESEM and EIS Study of Sealed AA2024 T3 Anodized in Sulfuric Acid Electrolytes: Influence of Tartaric Acid

The present study investigates the effect of tartaric acid on anodic film morphology and on corrosion resistance of hydrothermally sealed anodized AA2024. Anodizing treatment was performed in dilute sulfuric acid electrolyte with or without addition of tartaric acid. Hydrothermal sealing was carried out in boiling water for each anodized specimen. The morphology of the sealed anodic films was examined using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was performed to assess sealing quality and corrosion resistance of the anodic films. It was shown that the sealing was more efficient in the case of anodic films formed in tartaric acid electrolyte mainly due to their lower porosity. It was also observed that the properties of the barrier layer were higher when sealing was performed on specimens anodized in the presence of tartaric acid. This suggests a specific role of the species on the barrier layer, which contributes to the enhancement of the performance in terms of corrosion resistance of the sealed anodic films. The present study clearly validates the beneficial role of tartaric acid in anodizing baths for the corrosion protection of AA2024

The main objectives of this report are as follows: 1 To understand and provide a review of the current state of the Sustainable Investment (SI) market in Turkey, 2 To identify the drivers and obstacles for sustainable investments, and assess the commercial feasibility of different approaches and initiatives that may stimulate the SI market in Turkey, 3 To analyze the institutional prerequisites and interventions that will fuel the development of investments, which would, in turn, encourage a betterallocation of local and international capital to sustainable enterprises and hence support sustainable development of the Turkish economy. This study forms part of a series of assessments of Sustainable Investment (SI) in Brazil (2009), India (2009) and China (2009), and draws upon earlier reports published by IFC jointly with the Economist Intelligence Unit: Sustainable Invest ing in Emerging Markets: Unscathed by the Financial Crises (2010) and with Mercer; Gaining Ground, Integrating Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Factors into Investment Processes in Emerging Markets (2009)

The challenge of neuroimaging during pregnancy

Background: Central nervous system conditions may affect every aspect of female reproduction from fertility to lactation. The objective of this study was to examine the performance of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of maternal neurologic disorders and to examine the outcome of pregnancies complicated by abnormal neurologic imaging. Methods: Retrospective observational study of 20 parturients presenting with severe neurologic symptoms (January 2006 to January 2016).Results: Abnormal neuro-radiological findings were found. Only 10% of the computed tomography-scans were normal. Both magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography that were performed in all cases showed cerebral edema (90%) with different degrees, thereby cerebral edema was the predominant lesion. Pertaining to its localization, 65% were localized in the parietal or occipital area, 10% in the paraventricular area, and 10% were diffused. Also, 35% showed intracerebral hemorrhage and 10% showed cerebellar hemorrhage. The incidence of neurological disorders in pregnancy and puerperium was high. Epilepsy and headache were the most common primary and secondary neurological disorders. Conclusions: The role of neuroimaging in diagnosing neurological disorders is crucial for prevention of severe complications
