    Animal experiments for the determination of an optimal wavelength for retinal coagulations.

    The retina of rabbits was coagulated with different wave-lengths (570–630 nm) using a tunable dye laser with Rhodamin 6G. To achieve comparable ophthalmoscopic appearance the intensity of the laser beam was varied with neutral filters of varying absorption. Histologic examination of fresh coagulation effects and 3-week-old coagulation scars showed no difference in relation to the wavelength used. Theoretically, 577 nm seems to be a particularly useful wavelength for the treatment of a wide variety of retinal lesions because it is not absorbed in xanthophyll and penetrates opacities of the optic media better than argon blue green. Furthermore, it is absorbed maximally in hemoglobin, making it particularly suitable for the coagulation of blood vessels

    Normal and anti Meyer-Neldel rule in conductivity of highly crystallized undoped microcrystalline silicon films

    We have studied the electrical conductivity behavior of highly crystallized undoped hydrogenated microcrystalline silicon films having different microstructures. The dark conductivity is seen to follow Meyer Neldel rule (MNR) in some films and anti MNR in others, which has been explained on the basis of variation in the film microstructure and the corresponding changes in the effective density of states distributions. A band tail transport and statistical shift of Fermi level are used to explain the origin of MNR as well as anti-MNR in our samples. The observation of MNR and anti MNR in electrical transport behavior of microcrystalline silicon is discussed in terms of the basic underlying physics of their origin and the significance of these relationships.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    A novel proviral clone of HIV-2: Biological and phylogenetic relationship to other primate immunodeficiency viruses.

    Infectious molecular clones of the human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) will be valuable tools for the study of regulatory gene functions and the development of an animal model for the human acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). To this end, we have cloned and sequenced a novel HIV-2 isolate, HIV-2BEN. One clone, designated MK6, is infectious for various human T-cell lines and for human and macaque peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL), allowing molecular studies of HIV-2 infection and replication. Since MK6 is highly cytopathic in MT-2 and Molt-4 clone 8 cells, antiviral agents and neutralizing sera may be tested. Cluster analysis of HIV-1, HIV-2, and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) env and gag genes revealed that HIV-2BEN yielded the earliest node of phylogenetic divergence for all reported HIV-2 sequences. Noise analysis showed that, with the current data, no specification of any branching order can be made among the four groups of primate lentiviruses, HIV-1, HIV-2/SIVSMM/MAC, SIVAGM, and SIVMND

    Climate-Ready Landscape Plants: Garden Roses Trialed at Reduced Irrigation Frequency in Utah, USA

    Increased urban and suburban populations in the arid western United States have resulted in more water demand; however, water availability in the region has become limited because of inadequate precipitation. Recent droughts have led to restrictions on irrigating landscape plants. Garden rose (Rosa ×hybrida) is commonly used as flowering plants in residential landscapes, but its drought tolerance has not been widely studied. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of reduced irrigation frequency on visual quality, plant growth, and physiology of five garden rose cultivars, including ChewPatout (Oso Easy® Urban Legend®), Meibenbino (Petite Knock Out®), MEIRIFTDAY (Oso Easy® Double Pink), Overedclimb (Cherry Frost™), and Radbeauty (Sitting Pretty™). Twenty-four plants of each rose cultivar were established in a trial plot at Utah Agricultural Experiment Station Greenville Research Farm (North Logan, UT, USA) in Summer 2021. Plants were randomly assigned to one of three deficit irrigation treatments for which irrigation frequencies were calculated using 80% reference evapotranspiration (ETO) (high), 50% ETO (medium), and 20% ETO (low). The total volumes of irrigation water applied to each plant were 345.6, 172.8, and 43.2 L for the high, medium, and low irrigation frequencies, respectively, during the deficit irrigation trial from 12 May to 30 Sep 2022. Root zones were wetted more frequently as irrigation frequency increased from low to high irrigation frequencies. Decreased irrigation frequency increased the number of visibly wilted and damaged leaves on all rose cultivars. However, only ‘Meibenbino’ and ‘MEIRIFTDAY’ exhibited a reduction in overall appearance under decreased irrigation frequency. The relative growth indices of both ‘Meibenbino’ and ‘MEIRIFTDAY’ decreased by 6%, whereas the dry weights of their leaves decreased by 37% and 36%, respectively, as irrigation decreased from high to low frequencies. Roses in this study appeared to decrease stomatal conductance up to 51% when irrigation decreased from high to low frequencies, or when air temperature increased. ‘Meibenbino’ and ‘MEIRIFTDAY’ exhibited unacceptable overall appearance, growth reduction, and higher leaf–air temperature differences, and they were less tolerant to reduced irrigation. Although the ‘Radbeauty’ maintained plant growth under the reduced irrigation frequency, the large leaf size led to a more visibly wilted appearance and the potential for heat stress, thus impairing visual quality. ‘ChewPatout’ and ‘Overedclimb’ were most tolerant to deficit irrigation at 20% ETO and maintained plant growth with acceptable visual quality and lower leaf temperatures when they received one irrigation during the growing season

    Small molecule specifically inhibiting microglial nitric oxide release could become a potential treatment for neuroinflammation

    Microglia are the immune effector cells of the central nervous system (CNS) and react to pathologic events with a complex process including the release of nitric oxide (NO). NO is a free radical, which is toxic for all cells at high concentrations. To target an exaggerated NO release, we tested a library of 16 544 chemical compounds for their effect on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced NO release in cell line and primary neonatal microglia. We identified a compound (C1) which significantly reduced NO release in a dose-dependent manner, with a low IC50 (252 nM) and no toxic side effects in vitro or in vivo. Target finding strategies such as in silico modelling and mass spectroscopy hint towards a direct interaction between C1 and the nitric oxide synthase making C1 a great candidate for specific intra-cellular interaction with the NO producing machinery

    Between a rock and a hard place: Associations between Mentzos' “dilemma”, self‐reported interpersonal problems, and psychosocial functioning in individuals with non‐affective psychoses

    Primary aim of this study was to determine the extent and type of self-reported interpersonal problems in patients with non-affective psychoses and their impact on psychosocial functioning. Furthermore, we aimed to explore potential links with the psychodynamic construct of Stavros Mentzos' "psychotic dilemma", which describes an insufferable inner tension caused by an individual's struggle of being torn between "self-oriented" and "object-oriented" tendencies. In a cross-sectional study among 129 patients with non-affective psychoses, measures of cognition, symptom load and social functioning as well as a tentative, psychodynamic assessment of Mentzos' "dilemma" were obtained during a clinical research visit. Self-report data on interpersonal problems were gathered using the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP-64D) and compared with a German representative standard sample. Second, IIP-64D scores were compared between groups with or without Mentzos' "dilemma". Hierarchical regression analyses were performed to test for the impact of interpersonal problems on psychosocial functioning, while controlling for cognitive deficits and psychopathology. Results showed that IIP-64D scores differed significantly from healthy controls, except for "self-centred" and "intrusive" interpersonal styles. Participants with a potential "psychotic dilemma" scored significantly higher on the subscales: "domineering", "self-centred", "cold", and "socially avoidant" than the group without a "psychotic dilemma". The total amount of interpersonal problems, and particularly high scores on the IIP-64D "socially avoidant" subscale, predicted psychosocial dysfunction, whereas a "cold" interpersonal style had an opposite effect. In conclusion, specific interpersonal problems may predict psychotherapeutic outcome measures like psychosocial functioning and are partly compatible with the psychodynamic construct of Stavros Mentzos' "psychotic dilemma"
