Youth Perspectives on Community Assets and Geography in Puyallup, WA

    Get PDF
Introduction:Youth poses a perspective of their communities that is unique, but not always acknowledged. The goal of this project was to examine how teenage residents in suburban Puyallup, WA perceive their surroundings. Some theoretical assumptions exist in background literature on this issue. Firstly, planners often design communities to prevent youth from engaging in deconstructive activities, not to allow them to engage in constructive activities. As a result, communities are often designed with fewer youth-oriented assets and venues. Fewer youth-oriented places to travel to will cause teens to be less physically active. In addition, youth perceptions of access to these places will determine whether or not they utilize them. Also, according to background literature, youth place special value on public spaces (mainly parks) and the presence of natural elements in a community.https://digitalcommons.tacoma.uw.edu/gis_projects/1031/thumbnail.jp

This book overviews the financial challenges of vulnerable Americans and creative programs that look beyond income as a metric of financial health is divided into four sections. The first section, “Where We Are,” describes the current financial statistics of households by demographic and economic era. The second (and largest) section, “Why Financial Well-Being Matters for All,” is broken into four topics: the economy, financial services system, and community; employment and business; health and social services; and education. Each illustrates the strong role financial well-being plays in other systems at the individual and community level

Editor’s Note I want to start off by thanking all the authors for their time, interest, and energy they channeled into this third volume of the Proceedings of the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching and Learning Conference. This volume is our first digital only publication and moves us through a conversation about STEM employment, roles of professional development and global implications in STEM Industry and education. The perspective of preparing future generations for jobs not yet defined and addressing individual needs for both p-20 students and educators to meet the growing demands of the ever changing global economy. My second thank you goes out to Lisa Millsaps, Amanda Glaze, Antonio Gutierrez and Kania Greer, our wonderful reviewers, and the conference planning team at Georgia Southern University for their help along the way. Cheers to round three of the Proceedings of the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching and Learning Conference! Best, Lisa Stuev

Background and Purpose: This case report describes a 5 week outpatient trial of conservative management of calcific tendinitis of the left shoulder. The patient presented with limited, left shoulder ROM, strength, glenohumeral joint restriction, pain with shoulder plane motions, and shoulder point tenderness. The purpose of this case report is to describe the interventions used for this patient and the outcomes of following the interventions used. Description. The treatment of this patient included ROM exercises, rotator cuff strengthening exercises, manual therapy, iontophoresis, and ultrasound Outcomes. Following PT intervention, the patient achieved minimal improvements in ROM, strength, and pain. The patient did, however, demonstrate improvements with glenohumeral joint restriction. Following trial of conservative management, the patient opted for arthroscopic surgery following consultation with orthopedic surgeon. Discussion. The treatment of this patient primarily included improving glenohumeral joint biomechanics, which included rotator cuff strengthening, scapular stabilization, and manual therapy as well as treating the patient\u27s shoulder pain symptoms. Treatment was progressed and/or regressed based on the patient\u27s response

    International Professional Development: Lessons Learned

    Get PDF
In 2016 Georgia Southern University Institute for Interdisciplinary STEM Education (i 2 STEM e ) was approached by a collaborative group of educators from India now living in the US. They noticed a need for teachers in India to have access to the Interdisciplinary STEM Education pedagogical techniques through focused professional development. Over the course of the next two years, the partnership developed and in September 2016 the first group of educators in India was given a professional development opportunity around the concepts of Authentic Teaching, including place-based education, problem based learning, and project based learning. This paper will discuss the approach the educators delivering the professional development took, the barriers and successes to implementing professional development in a new cultural setting, and the next steps to be taken. It is hoped that this information will provide future providers of PD, who are working outside their country of residence, with insights and ideas on working with a culturally different and diverse educational setting

The importance of detailed epigenomic profiling of different cell types within organs.

    Get PDF
The human body consists of hundreds of kinds of cells specified from a single genome overlaid with cell type-specific epigenetic information. Comprehensively profiling the body's distinct epigenetic landscapes will allow researchers to verify cell types used in regenerative medicine and to determine the epigenetic effects of disease, environmental exposures and genetic variation. Key marks/factors that should be investigated include regions of nucleosome-free DNA accessible to regulatory factors, histone marks defining active enhancers and promoters, DNA methylation levels, regulatory RNAs, and factors controlling the three-dimensional conformation of the genome. Here we use the lung to illustrate the importance of investigating an organ's purified cell epigenomes, and outline the challenges and promise of realizing a comprehensive catalog of primary cell epigenomes
