Disappearing repositories -- taking an infrastructure perspective on the long-term availability of research data

Currently, there is limited research investigating the phenomenon of research data repositories being shut down, and the impact this has on the long-term availability of data. This paper takes an infrastructure perspective on the preservation of research data by using a registry to identify 191 research data repositories that have been closed and presenting information on the shutdown process. The results show that 6.2 % of research data repositories indexed in the registry were shut down. The risks resulting in repository shutdown are varied. The median age of a repository when shutting down is 12 years. Strategies to prevent data loss at the infrastructure level are pursued to varying extent. 44 % of the repositories in the sample migrated data to another repository, and 12 % maintain limited access to their data collection. However, both strategies are not permanent solutions. Finally, the general lack of information on repository shutdown events as well as the effect on the findability of data and the permanence of the scholarly record are discussed

Cardiac Output Measurements in Septic Patients: Comparing the Accuracy of USCOM to PiCCO

USCOM is an ultrasound-based method which has been accepted for noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring in various clinical conditions (USCOM, Ultrasonic cardiac output monitoring). The present study aimed at comparing the accuracy of the USCOM device with that of the thermodilution technique in patients with septicemia. We conducted a prospective observational study in a medical but noncardiological ICU of a university hospital. Septic adult patients (median age 55 years, median SAPS-II-Score 43 points) on mechanical ventilation and catecholamine support were monitored with USCOM and PiCCO (n = 70). Seventy paired left-sided CO measurements (transaortic access = COUS-A) were obtained. The mean COUS-A were 6.55 l/min (±2.19) versus COPiCCO 6.5 l/min (±2.18). The correlation coefficient was r = 0.89. Comparison by Bland-Altman analysis revealed a bias of −0.36 l/min (±0.99 l/min) leading to a mean percentage error of 29%. USCOM is a feasible and rapid method to evaluate CO in septic patients. USCOM does reliably represent CO values as compared to the reference technique based on thermodilution (PiCCO). It seems to be appropriate in situations where CO measurements are most pertinent to patient management

The service allows searching for RDRs of any type and from all disciplines, and users can filter results based on a wide range of characteristics. The re3data RDR descriptions are available as Open Data accessible through an API and are utilized by numerous Open Science services. re3data is engaged in various initiatives and projects concerning data management and is mentioned in the policies of many scientific institutions, funding organizations, and publishers. This article reflects on the ten-year experience of running re3data and discusses ten key issues related to the management of an Open Science service that caters to RDRs worldwide

Report on re3data COREF / CoreTrustSeal Workshop on Quality Management at Research Data Repositories

On October 5, 2022, the “Workshop on Quality Management at Research Data Repositories” – jointly organized by re3data COREF and CoreTrustSeal – was held online with more than 70 participants attending. The objective of the workshop was to discuss activities research data repositories perform to assure, assess, and improve data quality.The workshop started with input from the workshop organizers: re3data COREF presented results of a recent suvey on quality management at repositories, and CoreTrustSeal shared the perspective of a certification organization. Then, repositories from different disciplinary backgrounds presented their approaches to quality management. The workshop concluded with a breakout session and a plenary discussion on options for making information on data quality assurance more visible

Plant diversity enhances production and downward transport of biodegradable dissolved organic matter

1. Plant diversity is an important driver of belowground ecosystem functions, such as root growth, soil organic matter (SOM) storage, and microbial metabolism, mainly by influencing the interactions between plant roots and soil. Dissolved organic matter (DOM), as the most mobile form of SOM, plays a crucial role for a multitude of soil processes that are central for ecosystem functioning. Thus, DOM is likely to be an important mediator of plant diversity effects on soil processes. However, the relationships between plant diversity and DOM have not been studied so far. 2. We investigated the mechanisms underlying plant diversity effects on concentrations of DOM using continuous soil water sampling across 6 years and 62 plant communities in a long‐term grassland biodiversity experiment in Jena, Germany. Furthermore, we investigated plant diversity effects on the molecular properties of DOM in a subset of the samples. 3. Although DOM concentrations were highly variable over the course of the year with highest concentrations in summer and autumn, we found that DOM concentrations consistently increased with plant diversity across seasons. The positive plant diversity effect on DOM concentrations was mainly mediated by increased microbial activity and newly sequestered carbon in topsoil. However, the effect of soil microbial activity on DOM concentrations differed between seasons, indicating DOM consumption in winter and spring, and DOM production in summer and autumn. Furthermore, we found increased contents of small and easily decomposable DOM molecules reaching deeper soil layers with high plant diversity. 4. Synthesis. Our findings suggest that plant diversity enhances the continuous downward transport of DOM in multiple ways. On the one hand, higher plant diversity results in higher DOM concentrations, on the other hand, this DOM is less degraded. The present study indicates, for the first time, that higher plant diversity enhances the downward transport of dissolved molecules that likely stimulate soil development in deeper layers and therefore increase soil fertility

Develop & Curate – Einträge für Forschungsdatenrepositorien in re3data erstellen, bearbeiten, durchsuchen und nachnutzen

Das internationale Nachweisinstrument für Forschungsdatenrepositorien re3data – Registry of Research Data Repositories weist derzeit (September 2021) über 2700 Repositorien aus allen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen nach. Die frei zugängliche Infrastruktur wurde im Rahmen zweier durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft geförderter Projekte entwickelt. re3data bietet umfassende Beschreibungen der Repositorien auf Grundlage eines detaillierten Metadatenschemas, dessen aktualisierte Version kürzlich publiziert wurde(https://doi.org/10.2312/re3.008).Der Dienst fördert Open-Science-Praktiken und die Sichtbarkeit wissenschaftsgetriebener offener Infrastrukturen. Wissenschaftliche Communities, Förderorganisationen, Bibliotheken und andere wissenschaftliche Infrastrukturen nutzen und empfehlen den Dienst an Forschende.Nach einer kurzen Vorstellung des Dienstes und des Projektes re3data COREF, das für die Weiterentwicklung von re3data verantwortlich ist, folgt der praktische Teil: Im Hands-on Lab wird aufgezeigt, welche Informationen ein re3data-Eintrag enthalten sollte, um eine maximale Sichtbarkeit für das Repositorium zu gewährleisten. Der Aufnahmeprozess für Repositorien wird erläutert und die Teilnehmer*innen erfahren, wie sie neue Einträge und Änderungsvorschläge einreichen können. Ergänzend zum Aspekt der Informationsanreicherung wird es auch einen Teil geben, der sich mit der Nutzung und Auswertung von re3data-Metadaten befasst. re3data bietet über seine Benutzungsoberfläche sowie per API allen Nutzer*innen zentrale Anlaufpunkte für den Zugriff auf ihre Daten und freien digitalen Ressourcen. Wir stellen Ihnen die API vor (aufbereitete Datensets, Schnittstellen und Metadatenformate) und zeigen Ihnen in dieser Einführungsveranstaltung, wie Sie mit der freien Software R unsere Daten abrufen können. Teilnehmer*innen können die bereitgestellten Jupyter Notebooks über den eigenen Browser nutzen. Vorwissen oder lokal installierte Software sind nicht erforderlich
