    Estimating fine-root production by tree species and understorey functional groups in two contrasting peatland forests

    Background and aims Estimation of root-mediated carbon fluxes in forested peatlands is needed for understanding ecosystem functioning and supporting greenhouse gas inventories. Here, we aim to determine the optimal methodology for utilizing ingrowth cores in estimating annual fine-root production (FRP) and its vertical distribution in trees, shrubs and herbs. Methods We used 3-year data obtained with modified ingrowth core method and tested two calculation methods: 'ingrowth-dividing' and `ingrowth-subtracting'. Results The ingrowth-dividing method combined with a 2-year incubation of ingrowth cores can be used for the 'best estimate' of FRP. The FRP in the nutrient-rich fen forest (561 g m(-2)) was more than twice that in the nutrient-poor bog forest (244 g m(-2)). Most FRP occurred in the top 20-cm layer (76-82 %). Tree FRP accounted for 71 % of total FRP in the bog and 94 % in the fen forests, respectively, following the aboveground vegetation patterns; however, in fen forest the proportions of spruce and birch in FRP were higher than their proportions in stand basal area. Conclusions Our methodology may be used to study peatland FRP patterns more widely and will reduce the volume of labour-intensive work, but will benefit from verification with other methods, as is the case in all in situ FRP studies.Peer reviewe

    Socio-economic status and overall and cause-specific mortality in Sweden

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Previous studies have reported discrepancies in cause-specific mortality among groups of individuals with different socio-economic status. However, most of the studies were limited by the specificity of the investigated populations and the broad definitions of the causes of death. The aim of the present population-based study was to explore the dependence of disease specific mortalities on the socio-economic status in Sweden, a country with universal health care. Another aim was to investigate possible gender differences.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Using the 2006 update of the Swedish Family-Cancer Database, we identified over 2 million individuals with socio-economic data recorded in the 1960 national census. The association between mortality and socio-economic status was investigated by Cox's proportional hazards models taking into account the age, time period and residential area in both men and women, and additionally parity and age at first birth in women.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We observed significant associations between socio-economic status and mortality due to cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, to cancer and to endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases. The influence of socio-economic status on female breast cancer was markedly specific: women with a higher socio-economic status showed increased mortality due to breast cancer.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Even in Sweden, a country where health care is universally provided, higher socio-economic status is associated with decreased overall and cause-specific mortalities. Comparison of mortality among female and male socio-economic groups may provide valuable insights into the underlying causes of socio-economic inequalities in length of life.</p

    Partner relationship satisfaction and maternal emotional distress in early pregnancy

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recognition of maternal emotional distress during pregnancy and the identification of risk factors for this distress are of considerable clinical- and public health importance. The mental health of the mother is important both for herself, and for the physical and psychological health of her children and the welfare of the family. The first aim of the present study was to identify risk factors for maternal emotional distress during pregnancy with special focus on partner relationship satisfaction. The second aim was to assess interaction effects between relationship satisfaction and the main predictors.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Pregnant women enrolled in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (n = 51,558) completed a questionnaire with questions about maternal emotional distress, relationship satisfaction, and other risk factors. Associations between 37 predictor variables and emotional distress were estimated by multiple linear regression analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Relationship dissatisfaction was the strongest predictor of maternal emotional distress (ÎČ = 0.25). Other predictors were dissatisfaction at work (ÎČ = 0.11), somatic disease (ÎČ = 0.11), work related stress (ÎČ = 0.10) and maternal alcohol problems in the preceding year (ÎČ = 0.09). Relationship satisfaction appeared to buffer the effects of frequent moving, somatic disease, maternal smoking, family income, irregular working hours, dissatisfaction at work, work stress, and mother's sick leave (<it>P </it>< 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Dissatisfaction with the partner relationship is a significant predictor of maternal emotional distress in pregnancy. A good partner relationship can have a protective effect against some stressors.</p

    Gene-Based Analysis of Regionally Enriched Cortical Genes in GWAS Data Sets of Cognitive Traits and Psychiatric Disorders

    Background: Despite its estimated high heritability, the genetic architecture leading to differences in cognitive performance remains poorly understood. Different cortical regions play important roles in normal cognitive functioning and impairment. Recently, we reported on sets of regionally enriched genes in three different cortical areas (frontomedial, temporal and occipital cortices) of the adult rat brain. It has been suggested that genes preferentially, or specifically, expressed in one region or organ reflect functional specialisation. Employing a gene-based approach to the analysis, we used the regionally enriched cortical genes to mine a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of the Norwegian Cognitive NeuroGenetics (NCNG) sample of healthy adults for association to nine psychometric tests measures. In addition, we explored GWAS data sets for the serious psychiatric disorders schizophrenia (SCZ) (n = 3 samples) and bipolar affective disorder (BP) (n = 3 samples), to which cognitive impairment is linked. Principal Findings: At the single gene level, the temporal cortex enriched gene RAR-related orphan receptor B (RORB) showed the strongest overall association, namely to a test of verbal intelligence (Vocabulary, P = 7.7E-04). We also applied gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) to test the candidate genes, as gene sets, for enrichment of association signal in the NCNG GWAS and in GWASs of BP and of SCZ. We found that genes differentially expressed in the temporal cortex showed a significant enrichment of association signal in a test measure of non-verbal intelligence (Reasoning) in the NCNG sample. Conclusion: Our gene-based approach suggests that RORB could be involved in verbal intelligence differences, while the genes enriched in the temporal cortex might be important to intellectual functions as measured by a test of reasoning in the healthy population. These findings warrant further replication in independent samples on cognitive traits

    Design and baseline characteristics of the finerenone in reducing cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in diabetic kidney disease trial

    Background: Among people with diabetes, those with kidney disease have exceptionally high rates of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality and progression of their underlying kidney disease. Finerenone is a novel, nonsteroidal, selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist that has shown to reduce albuminuria in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) while revealing only a low risk of hyperkalemia. However, the effect of finerenone on CV and renal outcomes has not yet been investigated in long-term trials. Patients and Methods: The Finerenone in Reducing CV Mortality and Morbidity in Diabetic Kidney Disease (FIGARO-DKD) trial aims to assess the efficacy and safety of finerenone compared to placebo at reducing clinically important CV and renal outcomes in T2D patients with CKD. FIGARO-DKD is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, event-driven trial running in 47 countries with an expected duration of approximately 6 years. FIGARO-DKD randomized 7,437 patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate >= 25 mL/min/1.73 m(2) and albuminuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio >= 30 to <= 5,000 mg/g). The study has at least 90% power to detect a 20% reduction in the risk of the primary outcome (overall two-sided significance level alpha = 0.05), the composite of time to first occurrence of CV death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or hospitalization for heart failure. Conclusions: FIGARO-DKD will determine whether an optimally treated cohort of T2D patients with CKD at high risk of CV and renal events will experience cardiorenal benefits with the addition of finerenone to their treatment regimen.     Clay mineral and Nd, Pb, and Sr isotope provenance of a MIS 4‐3 sediment record from the Lomonosov Ridge, central Arctic Ocean

    Abstract Modern techniques for detrital mineral provenance were applied to sediment core 96/12‐1pc from the Lomonosov Ridge in the central Arctic Ocean. The techniques include quantitative clay mineralogy analysis combined with determination of Nd, Pb, and Sr isotopes from clay fraction. The clay mineral assemblage and the isotope signatures depict distinct changes during the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 4‐3 transition corresponding to the Middle Weichselian deglaciation. This transition is characterised by a homogenous, 48 cm thick, dark grey, silty clay layer with a distinctive IRD concentration, forming a prominent marker bed for the central Arctic Ocean sediments. The elevated smectite and kaolinite contents in the transitional interval are possible weathering products of the Siberian basaltic rocks, such as the Putorana Plateau, feeding the shelves of the Kara Sea and the western Laptev Sea. The Nd and Sr isotope values are compatible with input from the basaltic rocks and fall within the isotopic range of sediments from these shelves. The abrupt changes in the Nd, Pb and Sr isotopic data from the distinct grey layer attributed to the MIS 4‐3 transition likely mark a pronounced deglaciation event. An increase in coarse debris in the grey layer indicates a change in the sedimentation regime with a strong iceberg rafting component. This change may also be related to a sudden release of meltwater from a large ice-dammed lake in the northern Siberia

    Heavy mineral assemblages of the De Long Trough and southern Lomonosov Ridge glacigenic deposits:implications for the East Siberian Ice Sheet extent

    Abstract The Arctic’s glacial history has classically been interpreted from marine records in terms of the fluctuations of the Eurasian and North American ice sheets. However, the extent and timing of the East Siberian Ice Sheet (ESIS) have remained uncertain. A recently discovered glacially scoured cross-shelf trough extending to the edge of the continental shelf north of the De Long Islands has provided additional evidence that glacial ice existed on parts of the East Siberian Sea (ESS) during previous glacial periods MIS 6 and 4. This study concentrates on defining the heavy mineral signature of glacigenic deposits from the East Siberian continental margin which were collected during the 2014 SWERUS-C3 expedition. The cores studied are 20-GC1 from the East Siberian shelf, 23-GC1 and 24-GC1 from the De Long Trough (DLT), and 29-GC1 from the southern Lomonosov Ridge (LR). Heavy mineral assemblages were used to identify prominent parent rocks in hinterland and other sediment source areas. The parent rock areas include major eastern Siberian geological provinces such as the Omolon massif, the Chukotka fold belt, the Verkhoyansk fold belt, and possibly the Okhotsk–Chukotka volcanic belt. The primary riverine sources for the ESS sediments are the Indigirka and Kolyma rivers, the material of which was glacially eroded and re-deposited in the DLT. The higher abundances of amphiboles in the heavy mineral assemblages may indicate ESS paleovalley of the Indigirka River as a major pathway of sediments, while the Kolyma River paleovalley pathway relates to a higher share of pyroxenes and epidote. The mineralogical signature in the DLT diamicts, consisting predominantly of amphiboles and pyroxenes with a minor content of garnet and epidote, shows clear delivery from the eastern part of the ESIS. Although the physical properties of the DLT glacial diamict closely resemble a pervasive diamict unit recovered from the southern LR, their source material is slightly different. The assemblages with elevated amphibole and garnet content, along with higher titanite and ilmenite content of the southern LR ice-rafted diamict, emphasise the Verkhoyansk fold belt as a possible primary source. The presence of glacial sediments and the recovered glacial–tectonic features on the East Siberian continental shelf and slope, along with the results from this heavy mineral analysis, imply that glacial ice not only grew out of the East Siberian shelf but also from the De Long Islands, and that there was also ice rafting related sediment transportation to the southern LR from westerly sources, such as the Laptev Sea

    Sedimentary facies and clay mineralogy of the late Pleistocene Landsort Deep sediments, Baltic Sea:implications for the Baltic Ice Lake development

    Abstract The Landsort Deep is the deepest part of the Baltic Sea and contains an excellent high-resolution late Pleistocene sediment record suitable to study the retreat history of the southern margin of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet and the development of the ice-marginal Baltic Ice Lake (BIL) from ~13.5 to 10.5 ka BP. The studied cores are from the lithostratigraphic Units V and VI of Hole M0063C that were recovered during the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 347. The subdivision and interpretation of the studied BIL record are based on the identification of seven distinct sedimentary facies, grain size characteristics, detrital clay minerals, water and carbon content, and physical properties. The ice-rafted debris (IRD) in the lowermost part of Unit VI indicates a proximal glaciolacustrine environment. The onset of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet deglaciation during the warm Bþlling/Allerþd interstadial caused a rise of the proglacial lake water level and the transition from ice-proximal (IRD-containing sediments) to ice-distal varved sediments (rhythmically laminated silty clays) detected within the middle part of Unit VI. This depositional unit of constant sedimentation was followed by the first drainage event of the BIL, which led to the deposition of a distinct clay-rich interval representing erosion and redeposition of the emerged lake bottom sediments. The reduced grain size of the overlying sediments is associated to the onset of cooler climate conditions and a possible ice sheet readvance during the Younger Dryas that resulted in a decrease of meltwater release and sediment availability. The higher sand content and kaolinite peak are associated to a rapid ice retreat and the release of abundant sediment laden meltwater plumes at the end of the Younger Dryas. The final drainage of the BIL enabled the erosion of coastal clay sediments, and the termination of the ice lake stage led to enhanced clay sedimentation to the Landsort Deep
