Influence of the Main Filter on QRS-amplitude and Duration in Human Electrocardiogram.
Accurate measurement of electrocardiograms (ECG) is critical for effective diagnosis of patient’s cardiac functions. Detailed examination
of filters’ effects on ECG accuracy, reproducibility and robustness covering a wide range of available commercial products can provide
valuable information on the relationship between quality and effectiveness of filters, and assessments of patients’ cardiac functions. In this
study, ECG device with 12 leads and built-in filters used for ECG measurements was assessed on human volunteers. Results showed that
with respect to measuring QRS wave duration and R-amplitude variation, there was a 4 % inaccuracy when the main filter was ON and OFF,
and R-amplitude variation was most pronounced in the V4 lead. Accordingly, variability of R-amplitude and length of QRS wave can be
reduced by the use of appropriate lead, and filter activation during the ECG assessment
The effects of six weeks of training on physical fitness and performance in teenage and mature top-level soccer players
The main aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of soccer-specific training on physical fitness components in adolescent elite soccer players and make comparisons with older counterparts. Twenty two male soccer players from the Serbian First Division team were allocated to two assigned trials according to age – young group (YG) and mature group (MG). Players in their teenage years (19 years and younger) were assigned to YG (10 subjects) and others to MG (12 subjects). Between the first and second test session, all subjects followed six weeks of soccer-specific periodized training programme. There were no differences between groups at pre- and post-training trial for body mass, vertical jump height, average anaerobic power and VO2max (P>0.05). Body fat was significantly lower in YG before and after training program as compared to MG (P<0.05). Body mass and fat dropped significantly in both groups after training program (P<0.05). Furthermore, average anaerobic power and VO2max along with vertical jump height, were significantly improved in both groups (P<0.05) at post-training performance. Finally, the magnitude of change in VO2max was significanty superior in MG as compared to YG after training program (18.3 vs. 7.8�20P<0.05). The findings of the present study indicate that the trainability indices are not highly influenced by age in top-level soccer players
Structural properties and neuronal toxicity of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis–associated Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase 1 aggregates
The appearance of protein aggregates is a characteristic of protein misfolding disorders including familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neurodegenerative disease caused by inherited mutations in Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1). Here, we use live cell imaging of neuronal and nonneuronal cells to show that SOD1 mutants (G85R and G93A) form an aggregate structure consisting of immobile scaffolds, through which noninteracting cellular proteins can diffuse. Hsp70 transiently interacts, in a chaperone activity-dependent manner, with these mutant SOD1 aggregate structures. In contrast, the proteasome is sequestered within the aggregate structure, an event associated with decreased degradation of a proteasomal substrate. Through the use of time-lapse microscopy of individual cells, we show that nearly all (90%) aggregate-containing cells express higher levels of mutant SOD1 and died within 48 h, whereas 70% of cells expressing a soluble mutant SOD1 survived. Our results demonstrate that SOD1 G85R and G93A mutants form a distinct class of aggregate structures in cells destined for neuronal cell death

Recent developments in sensor technology, wearable computing, Internet of Things (IoT), and wireless communication have given rise to research in ubiquitous healthcare and remote monitoring of human\u2019s health and activities. Health monitoring systems involve processing and analysis of data retrieved from smartphones, smart watches, smart bracelets, as well as various sensors and wearable devices. Such systems enable continuous monitoring of patients psychological and health conditions by sensing and transmitting measurements such as heart rate, electrocardiogram, body temperature, respiratory rate, chest sounds, or blood pressure. Pervasive healthcare, as a relevant application domain in this context, aims at revolutionizing the delivery of medical services through a medical assistive environment and facilitates the independent living of patients. In this chapter, we discuss (1) data collection, fusion, ownership and privacy issues; (2) models, technologies and solutions for medical data processing and analysis; (3) big medical data analytics for remote health monitoring; (4) research challenges and opportunities in medical data analytics; (5) examples of case studies and practical solutions
Discrete-Time Filter Synthesis using Product of Gegenbauer Polynomials
A new approximation to design continuoustime and discrete-time low-pass filters, presented in this paper, based on the product of Gegenbauer polynomials, provides the ability of more flexible adjustment of passband and stopband responses. The design is achieved taking into account a prescribed specification, leading to a better trade-off among the magnitude and group delay responses. Many well-known continuous-time and discrete-time transitional filter based on the classical polynomial approximations(Chebyshev, Legendre, Butterworth) are shown to be a special cases of proposed approximation method
Entanglement dynamics of two qubits under the influence of external kicks and Gaussian pulses
We have investigated the dynamics of entanglement between two spin-1/2 qubits
that are subject to independent kick and Gaussian pulse type external magnetic
fields analytically as well as numerically. Dyson time ordering effect on the
dynamics is found to be important for the sequence of kicks. We show that
"almost-steady" high entanglement can be created between two initially
unentangled qubits by using carefully designed kick or pulse sequences
Core Competencies in Cancer Genomics for Healthcare Professionals: Results From a Systematic Literature Review and a Delphi Process
The continuous development and use of genomic sequencing requires healthcare professionals to constantly integrate these advancements into their clinical practice. There is a documented lack of cancer genomics contents in the teaching and learning programs. We aimed to identify the core competencies in cancer genomics for non-genetic healthcare professionals. We performed a literature review in PubMed, SCOPUS, and Web of Science databases to retrieve articles published from 2000 to 2018, in English or Italian language. We included articles that reported the competencies for non-genetic healthcare professionals in cancer genomics. A web-based modified Delphi survey was conducted, aiming to define, through consensus, a set of core competencies that should be covered in the curricula. The international expert panel included specialists in genetics, genomics, oncology, and medical specialists. In the literature review, we retrieved nine articles, from which we identified core competencies for general physicians and nurses. The competencies were organized in three main domains: knowledge, attitudes, and practical abilities. In the second round of Delphi survey, consensus of 83.3% was reached for the definition of the core competencies. Thirty-seven items were defined as the competencies required for physicians and forty-two items for nurses. Through a consensus-based approach, a set of core competencies in cancer genomics for non-genetic healthcare professionals has been identified. Our findings could benchmark standards for curriculum development and future educational strategies
Meaningful life is possible with locked - In syndrome the personal account of a survivor
Locked-in syndrome (LIS) is a rare condition characterised by quadriplegia and anarthria and is usually caused by a bilateral ventral ischemic pontine lesion. Patients are normally fully conscious, but their only mode of communication is with vertical eye movements and/or blinking. Although the mortality rate is high, it has been shown that patients can survive for a significant period of time. Once an LIS patient becomes medically stable, given appropriate medical care, his or her life expectancy may be several decades. LIS patients may suffer appreciably if they are treated by hospital staff as nonresponsive. Medical professionals and lay people often assume that the quality of life of an LIS patient is so poor that it is not worth living. However, the reported overall quality of life of LIS patients is not significantly different from that of healthy subjects. In this case report, we describe a 60-year-old retired man living in a locked-in state due to a brainstem infarct. His personal account vividly reveals his inner thoughts, a great deal of suffering, and his ability to cope with his condition throughout seven years of illness. LIS patients' early referral to specialist rehabilitation services and strong social support from family greatly improves LIS patients'their quality of life. Even limited physical recovery can improve quality of life and enable LIS patients to become active members of society and return to living with family
