    Submarine evidence of ice-streaming and ice-sheet re-advance of the British Ice Sheet

    A number of major ice streams have been identified within the Pleistocene British–Irish Ice Sheet (BIIS), primarily based on onshore mapping and single beam bathymetric datasets offshore (e.g. Bradwell et al., 2008). The identification of these ice streams is crucial to better understand the flow pattern and demise of the last BIIS, although evidence is currently lacking for key marine sectors such as the North Sea Basin. An improved understanding of the past cycles of glaciation, timing and extent, has far reaching implications for better understanding global climate change and ice-sheet behaviour. This work focuses on the offshore geomorphological signature of the ice sheet sector referred to as the North Sea Lobe. New interpretations derived from high-resolution multibeam echosounder data and single-beam echosounder bathymetry data have been viewed in conjunction with onshore topographic digital surface models (NEXTMap). Derived layers of rugosity, slope, bathymetric positioning index and aspect were utilised during geomorphological mapping. Where available, multibeam backscatter intensity data have also been utilised as part of a semi-automated approach to identify areas of glacigenic deposits. Mega-scale glacial lineations and drumlin fields indicate the North Sea Lobe was fed by an ice stream emanating from the Forth–Tay catchment in central Scotland. Large arcuate moraine ridges, smaller-scale moraine ridges and grounding-zone wedges indicate a complex advance, recession and re-advance of the North Sea Lobe during the Last Glacial Maximum

    Establishing an empirical conceptual model of oral health in dependent adults:Systematic review

    Aim: This qualitative evidence synthesis was performed to establish a conceptual model of oral health in dependent adults that defines the construct of oral health and describes its interrelationships based on dependent adults’ and their caregivers’ experiences and views. Methods: Six bibliographic databases were searched: MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, OATD, and OpenGrey. Citations and reference lists were manually searched. A quality assessment of included studies was conducted independently by two reviewers using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist. The ‘best fit’ framework synthesis method was applied. Data were coded against an a priori framework and data not captured by this framework were thematically analyzed. To assess the confidence of the findings from this review, the Confidence in the Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative research (GRADE-CERQual) approach was used. Results: Twenty-seven eligible studies were included from 6126 retrieved studies. Four themes were generated to further understand oral health in dependent adults: oral health status, oral health impact, oral care, and oral health value. Conclusion: This synthesis and conceptual model offer a better understanding of oral health in dependent adults and subsequently provide a starting point to guide establishment of person-centred oral care interventions.</p

    Plucking enhanced beneath ice sheet margins: evidence from the Grampian Mountains, Scotland

    Concentrations of boulders are a common feature of landscapes modified by former mid-latitude ice sheets. In many cases, the origin of the boulders can be traced in the up-ice direction to a cliff only tens to hundreds of metres distant. The implication is that a pulse of plucking and short boulder transport occurred beneath thin ice at the end of the last glacial cycle. Here we use a case study in granite bedrock in the Dee Valley, Scotland, to constrain theory and explore the factors involved in such a late phase of plucking. Plucking is influenced by ice velocity, hydrology, effective ice pressure, the extent of subglacial cavities and bedrock characteristics. The balance between these factors favours block removal beneath thin ice near a glacier margin. At Ripe Hill in the Dee Valley, a mean exposure age of 14.2 ka on blocks supports the view that the boulder train formed at the end of ice sheet glaciation. The late pulse of plucking was further enhanced by ice flowing obliquely across vertical joints and by fluctuations in sub-marginal meltwater conditions. An implication of the study is that there is the potential for a wave of ice-marginal plucking to sweep across a landscape as an ice sheet retreats

The Utsira Formation in the northern North Sea has been flagged as a target for further storage. However, there are no regional studies of seal variability addressing heterogeneities that could facilitate seal bypass. This study aims to: (a) identify, assess and map the elements that promote or restrict fluid migration, (b) develop a matrix to regionally map containment confidence (CC) and (c) rank the different areas for CO2 containment across the Utsira Formation. The seal and overburden were mapped using a high‐resolution, pre‐stack depth‐migrated 3D broadband seismic reflection dataset and 141 exploration wells. Seal geometry, sandstone presence and sandstone connectivity in the seal and overburden were assigned relative CC scores, which were summed to map overall CC of the Utsira Fm. Indicators for shallow gas and migration were mapped and correlated with the other elements. Areas with the lowest CC are in the west of the Utsira Fm. Here, sandstones within the Seal Interval are connected through the overburden via sandy submarine fans. In the southeast, dipping stratigraphy downlaps onto the Utsira Fm., increasing the potential for connection with glacially‐derived channel‐lobe systems in the overburden. The areas with the highest CC are the central and northeast parts of the Utsira Fm., where the Seal Interval is mudstone‐dominated and parallel to the reservoir, and channel‐lobe systems identified in the Overburden Interval are disconnected from the reservoir. This area coincides with a thick depocentre of the northern Utsira Fm. These results can be used to inform CO2 storage site selection and constrain future CO2 plume simulation analyses for the Utsira Fm. The CC matrix outlined here can also be adapted and applied to regionally assess the containment of other potential CO2 storage reservoirs in any setting

    Molecular genetic analysis of the 3p — syndrome

    Molecular genetic analysis of five cases of 3p-syndrome (del(3)(qter-p25:)) was performed to investigate the relationship between the molecular pathology and clinical phenotype. Fluorescence in situ hybridization studies and analysis of polymorphic DNA markers from chromosome 3p25-p26 demonstrated that all four informative cases had distal deletions. However, the extent of the deletion was variable: in two patients with the most extensive deletions the deletion breakpoint mapped between RAF1 and D3S1250, in one patient the deletion breakpoint was between D3S1250 and D3S601, and in two patients the deletion commenced telomeric to D3S601 (and telomeric to D3S1317 in one of these). All five patients displayed the classical features of 3p- syndrome (mental retardation, growth retardation, microcephaly, ptosis and micrognathia) demonstrating that loss of sequences centromeric to D3S1317 is not required for expression of the characteristic 3p- syndrome phenotype. The three patients with the most extensive deletions had cardiac septal defects suggesting that a gene involved in normal cardiac development is contained in the interval D3S1250 and D3S18. The PMCA2 gene is contained within this region and deletion of this gene may cause congenital heart defects. At least three patients were deleted for the von Hippel - Lindau (VHL) disease gene although none had yet developed evidence of VHL disease. We conclude that molecular analysis of 3p- syndrome patients enhances the management of affected patients by identifying those at risk for VHL disease, and can be used to elucidate the critical regions for the 3p- syndrome phenotyp

    Deweyan tools for inquiry and the epistemological context of critical pedagogy

    This article develops the notion of resistance as articulated in the literature of critical pedagogy as being both culturally sponsored and cognitively manifested. To do so, the authors draw upon John Dewey\u27s conception of tools for inquiry. Dewey provides a way to conceptualize student resistance not as a form of willful disputation, but instead as a function of socialization into cultural models of thought that actively truncate inquiry. In other words, resistance can be construed as the cognitive and emotive dimensions of the ongoing failure of institutions to provide ideas that help individuals both recognize social problems and imagine possible solutions. Focusing on Dewey\u27s epistemological framework, specifically tools for inquiry, provides a way to grasp this problem. It also affords some innovative solutions; for instance, it helps conceive of possible links between the regular curriculum and the study of specific social justice issues, a relationship that is often under-examined. The aims of critical pedagogy depend upon students developing dexterity with the conceptual tools they use to make meaning of the evidence they confront; these are background skills that the regular curriculum can be made to serve even outside social justice-focused curricula. Furthermore, the article concludes that because such inquiry involves the exploration and potential revision of students\u27 world-ordering beliefs, developing flexibility in how one thinks may be better achieved within academic subjects and topics that are not so intimately connected to students\u27 current social lives, especially where students may be directly implicated

    Causal Inference in Natural Language Processing: Estimation, Prediction, Interpretation and Beyond

    A fundamental goal of scientific research is to learn about causal relationships. However, despite its critical role in the life and social sciences, causality has not had the same importance in Natural Language Processing (NLP), which has traditionally placed more emphasis on predictive tasks. This distinction is beginning to fade, with an emerging area of interdisciplinary research at the convergence of causal inference and language processing. Still, research on causality in NLP remains scattered across domains without unified definitions, benchmark datasets and clear articulations of the challenges and opportunities in the application of causal inference to the textual domain, with its unique properties. In this survey, we consolidate research across academic areas and situate it in the broader NLP landscape. We introduce the statistical challenge of estimating causal effects with text, encompassing settings where text is used as an outcome, treatment, or to address confounding. In addition, we explore potential uses of causal inference to improve the robustness, fairness, and interpretability of NLP models.
