Liberation of specific angular momentum through radiation and scattering in relativistic black-hole accretion discs

A key component of explaining the array of galaxies observed in the Universe is the feedback of active galactic nuclei, each powered by a massive black hole's accretion disc. For accretion to occur, angular momentum must be lost by that which is accreted. Electromagnetic radiation must offer some respite in this regard, the contribution for which is quantified in this paper, using solely general relativity, under the thin-disc regime. Herein, I calculate extremised situations where photons are entirely responsible for energy removal in the disc and then extend and relate this to the standard relativistic accretion disc outlined by Novikov & Thorne, which includes internal angular-momentum transport. While there is potential for the contribution of angular-momentum removal from photons to be >~1% out to ~10^4 Schwarzschild radii if the disc is irradiated and maximally liberated of angular momentum through inverse Compton scattering, it is more likely of order 10^2 Schwarzschild radii if thermal emission from the disc itself is stronger. The effect of radiation/scattering is stronger near the horizons of fast-spinning black holes, but, ultimately, other mechanisms must drive angular-momentum liberation/transport in accretion discs.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. Data distribution satellite

The Data Distribution Satellite (DDS), operating in conjunction with the planned space network, the National Research and Education Network and its commercial derivatives, would play a key role in networking the emerging supercomputing facilities, national archives, academic, industrial, and government institutions. Centrally located over the United States in geostationary orbit, DDS would carry sophisticated on-board switching and make use of advanced antennas to provide an array of special services. Institutions needing continuous high data rate service would be networked together by use of a microwave switching matrix and electronically steered hopping beams. Simultaneously, DDS would use other beams and on board processing to interconnect other institutions with lesser, low rate, intermittent needs. Dedicated links to White Sands and other facilities would enable direct access to space payloads and sensor data. Intersatellite links to a second generation ATDRS, called Advanced Space Data Acquisition and Communications System (ASDACS), would eliminate one satellite hop and enhance controllability of experimental payloads by reducing path delay. Similarly, direct access would be available to the supercomputing facilities and national data archives. Economies with DDS would be derived from its ability to switch high rate facilities amongst users needed. At the same time, having a CONUS view, DDS would interconnect with any institution regardless of how remote. Whether one needed high rate service or low rate service would be immaterial. With the capability to assign resources on demand, DDS will need only carry a portion of the resources needed if dedicated facilities were used. Efficiently switching resources to users as needed, DDS would become a very feasible spacecraft, even though it would tie together the space network, the terrestrial network, remote sites, 1000's of small users, and those few who need very large data links intermittently

Histidine is the axial ligand to cytochrome alpha 3 in cytochrome c oxidase

The nitric oxide-bound complexes of reduced yeast cytochrome c oxidase incorporated with [1,3-15N2]histidine have been investigated by EPR spectroscopy. The results of this study have allowed the unambiguous identification of histidine as the endogenous axial ligand to cytochrome alpha 3

Statistics of the radiated field of a space-to-earth microwave power transfer system

Statistics such as average power density pattern, variance of the power density pattern and variance of the beam pointing error are related to hardware parameters such as transmitter rms phase error and rms amplitude error. Also a limitation on spectral width of the phase reference for phase control was established. A 1 km diameter transmitter appears feasible provided the total rms insertion phase errors of the phase control modules does not exceed 10 deg, amplitude errors do not exceed 10% rms, and the phase reference spectral width does not exceed approximately 3 kHz. With these conditions the expected radiation pattern is virtually the same as the error free pattern, and the rms beam pointing error would be insignificant (approximately 10 meters)

TESTING FOR CHANGES IN THE PRICE ELASTICITY OF RESIDENTIAL ELECTRICITY DEMAND

    Get PDF
The demand for electricity in the residential sector is estimated to have become less elastic for the recent period of rising real prices as compared to earlier periods of stable or falling real price. Several possible reasons for this are investigated and we conclude that demand appears to be asymmetric with respect to price in both the short and long run. We then examine whether or not this is an important factor for forecast accuracy and public policy.Demand and Price Analysis, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Can consumer research panels form an effective part of the cancer research community?

    Get PDF
The North Trent Cancer Research Network’s Consumer Research Panel (NTCRN CRP) was established in December 2001 by the Academic Unit of Supportive Care at the University of Sheffield. In three years, the CRP has succeeded in nurturing a climate of sustainable consumer involvement within the NTCRN and this has become embedded in the culture of the network. Furthermore, the panel have championed a sustainable development of consumer involvement in health and social care research by testing new ground and forging a new way of working between health professionals and patients and carers. The CRP model has been held up as an example to other cancer networks, with new panels being set up around the country to emulate its success. This paper describes the Sheffield model of patient and public involvement and using the eight key principles of successful consumer involvement in research, identified in a recent paper by Telford et al (2003), provides a useful framework for analysing the work of the Panel. This demonstrates how consumers and professionals can inform each other to work constructively and synergistically to achieve impressive research results. The need for measurable outcomes to assess the impact and effect of consumer involvement is finally explored

Simulating the Role of Stellar Rotation in the Spectroscopic Effects of Differential Limb Magnification

Finite-source effects of gravitationally microlensed stars have been well discussed in the literature, but the role that stellar rotation plays has been neglected. A differential magnification map applied to a differentially Doppler-shifted surface alters the profiles of absorption lines, compromising their ordinarily symmetric nature. Herein, we assess the degree to which this finite-source effect of differential limb magnification (DLM), in combination with stellar rotation, alters spectroscopically derived stellar properties. To achieve this, we simulated a grid of high-magnification microlensing events using synthetic spectra. Our analysis shows that rotation of the source generates differences in the measured equivalent widths of absorption lines supplementary to DLM alone, but only of the order of a few percent. Using the wings of H alpha from the same simulated data, we confirmed the result of Johnson et al. (2010) that DLM alters measurements of effective temperature by < 100 K for dwarf stars, while showing rotation to bear no additional effect.Comment: Accepted for publication in PASA, 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl
