A Strategic Perspective on the Impact of Food Safety Standards on Developing Countries

    Get PDF
This paper explores the competing concepts of 'standards as barriers' and standards as catalysts' in the context of food safety standards in international trade in agricultural and food products. It is suggested that food safety standards can act as both a barrier to trade and the basis of competitive positioning for developing countries in international markets. This suggests that the application of a strategic framework to analyze and assess alternative responses to evolving food safety standards can throw some light on the circumstances under which standards act to prohibit trade or, alternatively, create competitive trade opportunities. The use of such a framework is illustrated through a brief case study of fish and fishery product exports from Kenya and India.Agriculture, Food, Trade, Food Safety, Standards, Technical barriers to Trade, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety, Q18, K32, F13,

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans 121 (2016): 1110–1132, doi:10.1002/2015JC011405.A 25 km streak of CF3SF5 was released on an isopycnal surface approximately 1100 m deep, and 150 m above the bottom, along the continental slope of the northern Gulf of Mexico, to study stirring and mixing of a passive tracer. The location and depth of the release were near those of the deep hydrocarbon plume resulting from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil well rupture. The tracer was sampled between 5 and 12 days after release, and again 4 and 12 months after release. The tracer moved along the slope at first but gradually moved into the interior of the Gulf. Diapycnal spreading of the patch during the first 4 months was much faster than it was between 4 and 12 months, indicating that mixing was greatly enhanced over the slope. The rate of lateral homogenization of the tracer was much greater than observed in similar experiments in the open ocean, again possibly enhanced near the slope. Maximum concentrations found in the surveys had fallen by factors of 104, 107, and 108, at 1 week, 4 months, and 12 months, respectively, compared with those estimated for the initial tracer streak. A regional ocean model was used to simulate the tracer field and help interpret its dispersion and temporal evolution. Model-data comparisons show that the model simulation was able to replicate statistics of the observed tracer distribution that would be important in assessing the impact of oil releases in the middepth Gulf. This research was made possible by a grant from The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative.2016-08-0

Subliminal priming and persuasion: Striking while the iron is hot.

Abstract Three studies demonstrated that subliminally priming a goal-relevant cognition (thirst in Studies 1 and 2; sadness in Study 3) influenced behavior (in Study 1) and enhanced the persuasiveness of an ad targeting the goal (in Studies 2 and 3) when people were motivated to pursue the goal (when they were thirsty in Studies 1 and 2; when they expected to interact with another person in Study 3). These results suggest that subliminal priming can be used to enhance persuasion, but only when certain conditions are met. Both the priming of goal-relevant cognitions and the motive to pursue the goal were necessary for ads targeting the goal to be more persuasive. The implications of these results for the role of functionality in subliminal priming and for the use and abuse of subliminal priming in persuasion are discussed

Fluidized Bed Polymer Particle ALD Process for Producing HDPE/Alumina Nanocomposites

    Get PDF
Micron-sized High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) particles were coated with ultrathin alumina (Al2O3) films in a Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR) by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) at 77 ºC. Al2O3 films on the HDPE particles were confirmed by different methods. These particles were extruded conventionally with the ceramic shells mixing intimately in the polymer matrix. The successful dispersion of the Al2O3 shells in the polymer matrix following extrusion was confirmed using cross sectional Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)

Elastic Chain in a Random Potential: Simulation of the Displacement Function <(u(x)u(0))2><(u(x)-u(0))^2> and Relaxation

We simulate the low temperature behaviour of an elastic chain in a random potential where the displacements u(x)u(x) are confined to the {\it longitudinal} direction (u(x)u(x) parallel to xx) as in a one dimensional charge density wave--type problem. We calculate the displacement correlation function g(x)=<(u(x)u(0))2>g(x)=< (u(x)-u(0))^2> and the size dependent average square displacement W(L)=W(L)=. We find that g(x)x2ηg(x)\sim x^{2\eta} with η3/4\eta\simeq3/4 at short distances and η3/5\eta\simeq3/5 at intermediate distances. We cannot resolve the asymptotic long distance dependence of gg upon xx. For the system sizes considered we find g(L/2)WL2χg(L/2)\propto W\sim L^{2\chi} with χ2/3\chi\simeq2/3. The exponent η3/5\eta\simeq3/5 is in agreement with the Random Manifold exponent obtained from replica calculations and the exponent χ2/3\chi\simeq2/3 is consistent with an exact solution for the chain with {\it transverse} displacements (u(x)u(x) perpendicular to xx).The distribution of nearest distances between pinning wells and chain-particles is found to develop forbidden regions.Comment: 19 pages of LaTex, 6 postscript figures available on request, submitted to Journal of Physics A, MAJOR CHANGE

Randomized Controlled Trial of Difelikefalin for Chronic Pruritus in Hemodialysis Patients

INTRODUCTION: There is an unmet medical need for pruritus associated with chronic kidney disease, a distressing complication characterized by generalized and persistent itch affecting 20% to 40% of patients undergoing hemodialysis. Here we report the results of a phase 2 trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of a novel peripherally restricted kappa opioid receptor agonist, difelikefalin, in adult patients undergoing hemodialysis with pruritus. METHODS: In this study, 174 hemodialysis patients with moderate-to-severe pruritus were randomly assigned to receive difelikefalin (0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 μg/kg) or placebo intravenously thrice weekly after each hemodialysis session for 8 weeks in a double-blind, controlled trial. The primary endpoint was the change from baseline at week 8 in the weekly mean of the 24-hour Worst Itching Intensity Numerical Rating Scale score. The secondary efficacy endpoint was the change in itch-related quality of life measured by the Skindex-10 questionnaire. Other endpoints included safety, sleep quality, and additional measures including the 5-D itch scale. RESULTS: A significant reduction from baseline in itch intensity scores at week 8 favored all difelikefalin doses combined versus placebo ( CONCLUSION: In this trial, difelikefalin effectively reduced itching intensity and improved sleep and itch-related quality of life
