Modeling Multi-Wavelength Stellar Astrometry. II. Determining Absolute Inclinations, Gravity Darkening Coefficients, and Spot Parameters of Single Stars with SIM Lite
We present a novel technique to determine the absolute inclination of single
stars using multi-wavelength sub-milliarcsecond astrometry. The technique
exploits the effect of gravity darkening, which causes a wavelength-dependent
astrometric displacement parallel to a star's projected rotation axis. We find
this effect is clearly detectable using SIM Lite for various giant stars and
rapid rotators, and present detailed models for multiple systems using the
REFLUX code. We also explore the multi-wavelength astrometric reflex motion
induced by spots on single stars. We find that it should be possible to
determine spot size, relative temperature, and some positional information for
both giant and nearby main-sequence stars utilizing multi-wavelength SIM Lite
data. This data will be extremely useful in stellar and exoplanet astrophysics,
as well as supporting the primary SIM Lite mission through proper
multi-wavelength calibration of the giant star astrometric reference frame, and
reduction of noise introduced by starspots when searching for extrasolar

Bayesian inference for orbital eccentricities
Highest posterior density intervals (HPDI's) are derived for the true
eccentricities of spectroscopic binaries with measured values e ~ 0. These
yield upper limits when e is below the detection threshold e_th and seamlessly
transform to upper and lower bounds when e > e_th. In the main text, HPDI's are
computed with an informative eccentricity prior representing orbital decay due
to tidal dissipation. In an appendix, the corresponding HPDI's are computed
with a uniform prior and are the basis for a revised version of the
Lucy-Sweeney test, with the previous outcome e = 0 now replaced by an upper
limit. Sampling experiments with known prior confirm the validity of the

Imaging Findings in Two Cases of Fluoroquinolone-Induced Achilles Tendinopathy
AbstractTendonitis and tendon rupture are rare but recognized complications of fluoroquinolone therapy. Most reports of this problem have appeared in the rheumatology and pharmacology literature, and this topic has received little attention in the radiologic literature. We report two cases of fluoroquinolone-induced tendinopathy and describe their magnetic resonance (MR) and sonographic findings. Although Achilles tendinopathy is generally the result of repetitive injury, it is useful to keep other causes in mind. MR or sonographic findings of Achilles tendinopathy in a patient without history of antecedent trauma should prompt the radiologist to consider fluoroquinolone treatment as a possible causative agent

A Two-Chain Path Integral Model Of Positronium
We have used a path integral Monte Carlo technique to simulate positronium (Ps) in a cavity. The primitive propagator is used, with a pair of interacting chains representing the positron and electron. We calculate the energy and radial distribution function for Ps enclosed in a hard, spherical cavity, and the polarizability of the model Ps in the presence of an electrostatic field. We find that the positron distribution near the hard wall differs significantly from that for a single particle in a hard cavity. This leads to systematic deviations from predictions of free-volume models which treat Ps as an effective, single particle. A virial-type estimator is used to calculate the kinetic energy of the particle in the presence of hard walls. This estimator is found to be superior to a kinetic-type estimator given the interaction potentials, cavity sizes, and chain lengths considered in the current study. Period-doubling events in the light curve of R Cygni: evidence for chaotic behaviour
A detailed analysis of the century long visual light curve of the long-period
Mira star R Cygni is presented and discussed. The data were collected from the
publicly available databases of the AFOEV, the BAAVSS and the VSOLJ. The full
light curve consists of 26655 individual points obtained between 1901 and 2001.
The light curve and its periodicity were analysed with help of the O-C diagram,
Fourier analysis and time-frequency analysis. The results demonstrate the
limitations of these linear methods. The next step was to investigate the
possible presence of low-dimensional chaos in the light curve. For this, a
smoothed and noise-filtered signal was created from the averaged data and with
help of time delay embedding, we have tried to reconstruct the attractor of the
system. The main result is that R Cygni shows such period-doubling events that
can be interpreted as caused by a repetitive bifurcation of the chaotic
attractor between a period 2T orbit and chaos. The switch between these two
states occurs in a certain compact region of the phase space, where the light
curve is characterized by ~1500-days long transients. The Lyapunov spectrum was
computed for various embedding parameters confirming the chaotic attractor,
although the exponents suffer from quite high uncertainty because of the
applied approximation. Finally, the light curve is compared with a simple one
zone model generated by a third-order differential equation which exhibits
well-expressed period-doubling bifurcation. The strong resemblance is another
argument for chaotic behaviour. Further studies should address the problem of
global flow reconstruction, including the determination of the accurate

An evaluation of a multi-component adult weight management on referral intervention in a community setting
BACKGROUND: National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance on adult weight management recommends interventions are multi-component. We aimed to assess the implementation and health benefits of a primary care referral to an adult multi-component weight management intervention in a community setting. The intervention was offered through Primary care in National Health Service (NHS) South Gloucestershire, UK, from Oct 2008 to Nov 2010, in partnership with statutory, community and commercial providers. The scheme offered 12 weeks’ community based concurrent support of dietary (Weight Watchers, WW), physical activity (Exercise on Prescription, EOP) and behavioural change (motivational interviewing) components to obese adults. Funding was available for 600 places. RESULTS: Five hundred and fifty nine participants engaged with the intervention, mean age 48 years, 88 % female. Mean weight loss for all engagers was 3.7 kg (95 % confidence interval 3.4, 4.1). Participants completing the intervention achieved the largest weight reduction (mean loss 5.9 kg; 5.3, 6.6). Achievement of 5 % weight loss was higher in completers (58 %; 50, 65) compared to non-completers (19 %; 12, 26) and people who only participated in one commercial component of the intervention (either WW or EOP; 19 %; 13, 24). CONCLUSION: A multi-component weight management programme may be beneficial for weight loss, but a randomized controlled trial is needed to establish effectiveness and to evaluate cost
Differences in access and patient outcomes across antiretroviral treatment clinics in the Free State province: A prospective cohort study
Objective. To assess differences in access to antiretroviral treatment (ART) and patient outcomes across public sector treatment facilities in the Free State province, South Africa. Design. Prospective cohort study with retrospective database linkage. We analysed data on patients enrolled in the treatment programme across 36 facilities between May 2004 and December 2007, and assessed percentage initiating ART and percentage dead at 1 year after enrolment. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate associations of facility-level and patient-level characteristics with both mortality and treatment status. Results. Of 44 866 patients enrolled, 15 219 initiated treatment within 1 year; 8 778 died within 1 year, 7 286 before accessing ART. Outcomes at 1 year varied greatly across facilities and more variability was explained by facility-level factors than by patient-level factors. The odds of starting treatment within 1 year improved over calendar time. Patients enrolled in facilities with treatment initiation available on site had higher odds of starting treatment and lower odds of death at 1 year compared with those enrolled in facilities that did not offer treatment initiation.
