    Increased surface flashover voltage in microfabricated devices

    With the demand for improved performance in microfabricated devices, the necessity to apply greater electric fields and voltages becomes evident. When operating in vacuum, the voltage is typically limited by surface flashover forming along the surface of a dielectric. By modifying the fabrication process we have discovered it is possible to more than double the flashover voltage. Our finding has significant impact on the realization of next-generation micro- and nano-fabricated devices and for the fabrication of on-chip ion trap arrays for the realization of scalable ion quantum technology

    Posttransplant Metabolic Syndrome

    Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a cluster of metabolic derangements associated with insulin resistance and an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. MS has become a major health concern worldwide and is considered to be the etiology of the current epidemic of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In addition to cardiovascular disease, the presence of MS is also closely associated with other comorbidities including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The prevalence of MS in patients with cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease is not well established and difficult to ascertain. Following liver transplant, the prevalence of MS is estimated to be 44–58%. The main factors associated with posttransplant MS are posttransplant diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. In addition to developing NAFLD, posttransplant MS is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality that is 2.5 times that of the age- and sex-matched individuals. Additionally, the presence of posttransplant MS has been associated with rapid progression to fibrosis in individuals transplanted for HCV cirrhosis. There is an urgent need for well-designed prospective studies to fully delineate the natural history and risk factors associated with posttransplant MS. Until then, early recognition, prevention, and treatment of its components are vital in improving outcomes in liver transplant recipients

    This study explored the attitudes of consumers regarding the use of recombinant porcine somatotropin (PST) in the production of pork, and the association between the attitudes and individual socioeconomic characteristics. The data were collected from surveys of households located in the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan area. The results show that both gender and education may play a role in the level of concern regarding the use of PST. Education programs which address the safety of pork produced with PST need to target the lower-educated and female consumers.     Evidence for a first order transition in a plaquette 3d Ising-like action

    We investigate a 3d Ising action which corresponds to a a class of models defined by Savvidy and Wegner, originally intended as discrete versions of string theories on cubic lattices. These models have vanishing bare surface tension and the couplings are tuned in such a way that the action depends only on the angles of the discrete surface, i.e. on the way the surface is embedded in Z3{\bf Z}^3. Hence the name gonihedric by which they are known. We show that the model displays a rather clear first order phase transition in the limit where self-avoidance is neglected and the action becomes a plaquette one. This transition persists for small values of the self avoidance coupling, but it turns to second order when this latter parameter is further increased. These results exclude the use of this type of action as models of gonihedric random surfaces, at least in the limit where self avoidance is neglected.Comment: 4 pages Latex text, 4 postscript figure

    Using mainly the 1600 angstrom continuum channel, and also the 1216 angstrom Lyman-alpha channel (which includes some UV continuum and C IV emission), aboard the TRACE satellite, we observed the complete lifetime of a transient, bright chromospheric loop. Simultaneous observations with the SUMER instrument aboard the SOHO spacecraft revealed interesting material velocities through the Doppler effect existing above the chromospheric loop imaged with TRACE, possibly corresponding to extended non-visible loops, or the base of an X-ray jet.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted by Solar Physic

    String tension in gonihedric 3D Ising models

    For the 3D gonihedric Ising models defined by Savvidy and Wegner the bare string tension is zero and the energy of a spin interface depends only on the number of bends and self-intersections, in antithesis to the standard nearest-neighbour 3D Ising action. When the parameter kappa weighting the self-intersections is small the model has a first order transition and when it is larger the transition is continuous. In this paper we investigate the scaling of the renormalized string tension, which is entirely generated by fluctuations, using Monte Carlo simulations This allows us to obtain an estimate for the critical exponents alpha and nu using both finite-size-scaling and data collapse for the scaling function.Comment: Latex + postscript figures. 8 pages text plus 7 figures, spurious extra figure now removed

    Reconstructing the archosaur radiation using a Middle Triassic archosauriform tooth assemblage from Tanzania

    Following the Permo–Triassic mass extinction, Archosauriformes—the clade that includes crocodylians, birds, and their extinct relatives outside crown Archosauria—rapidly diversified into many distinct lineages, became distributed globally, and, by the Late Triassic, filled a wide array of resource zones. Current scenarios of archosauriform evolution are ambiguous with respect to whether their taxonomic diversification in the Early–Middle Triassic coincided with the initial evolution of dietary specializations that were present by the Late Triassic or if their ecological disparity arose sometime after lineage diversification. Late Triassic archosauriform dietary specialization is recorded by morphological divergence from the plesiomorphic archosauriform tooth condition (laterally-compressed crowns with serrated carinae and a generally triangular lateral profile). Unfortunately, the roots of this diversification are poorly documented, with few known Early­–Middle Triassic tooth assemblages, limiting characterizations of morphological diversity during this critical, early period in archosaur evolution. Recent fieldwork (2007–2017) in the Middle Triassic Manda Beds of the Ruhuhu Basin, Tanzania, recovered a tooth assemblage that provides a window into this poorly sampled interval. To investigate the taxonomic composition of that collection, we built a dataset of continuous quantitative and discrete morphological characters based on in situ teeth of known taxonomic status (e.g., Nundasuchus, Parringtonia: N = 65) and a sample of isolated teeth (N = 31). Using crown heights from known taxa to predict tooth base ratio (= base length/width), we created a quantitative morphospace for the tooth assemblage. The majority of isolated, unassigned teeth fall within a region of morphospace shared by several taxa from the Manda Beds (e.g., Nundasuchus, Parringtonia); two isolated teeth fall exclusively within a “Pallisteria” morphospace. A non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination (N = 67) of 11 binary characters reduced overlap between species. The majority of the isolated teeth from the Manda assemblage fall within the Nundasuchus morphospace. This indicates these teeth are plesiomorphic for archosauriforms as Nundasuchus exhibits the predicted plesiomorphic condition of archosauriform teeth. Our model shows that the conservative tooth morphologies of archosauriforms can be differentiated and assigned to species and/or genus, rendering the model useful for identifying isolated teeth. The large overlap in tooth shape among the species present and their overall similarity indicates that dietary specialization lagged behind species diversification in archosauriforms from the Manda Beds, a pattern predicted by Simpson’s “adaptive zones” model. Although applied to a single geographic region, our methods offer a promising means to reconstruct ecological radiations and are readily transferable across a broad range of vertebrate taxa throughout Earth history

    Generic Twistless Bifurcations

    We show that in the neighborhood of the tripling bifurcation of a periodic orbit of a Hamiltonian flow or of a fixed point of an area preserving map, there is generically a bifurcation that creates a ``twistless'' torus. At this bifurcation, the twist, which is the derivative of the rotation number with respect to the action, vanishes. The twistless torus moves outward after it is created, and eventually collides with the saddle-center bifurcation that creates the period three orbits. The existence of the twistless bifurcation is responsible for the breakdown of the nondegeneracy condition required in the proof of the KAM theorem for flows or the Moser twist theorem for maps. When the twistless torus has a rational rotation number, there are typically reconnection bifurcations of periodic orbits with that rotation number.Comment: 29 pages, 9 figure
