Bitten by a Bug: A Case Study in Malware Infection
This case study addresses malware infection and the organizational and technical consequences. This case study enables students to view the business continuity issues that should drive all security decisions in IT and allow analysis of the organizational and technical issues that impact recovery from a disaster that is caused by a malware infection. Information systems students seldom see case studies that involve the issues of disaster planning and business continuity within the context of what has become an ever-more frequent occurrence: a virus/worm (malware) infection. This case study would be appropriate for either undergraduate or graduate students in courses involving information resource management, MIS or information security
Constraining alternative theories of gravity using pulsar timing arrays
The opening of the gravitational wave window by ground-based laser
interferometers has made possible many new tests of gravity, including the
first constraints on polarization. It is hoped that within the next decade
pulsar timing will extend the window by making the first detections in the
nano-Hertz frequency regime. Pulsar timing offers several advantages over
ground-based interferometers for constraining the polarization of gravitational
waves due to the many projections of the polarization pattern provided by the
different lines of sight to the pulsars, and the enhanced response to
longitudinal polarizations. Here we show that existing results from pulsar
timing arrays can be used to place stringent limits on the energy density of
longitudinal stochastic gravitational waves. Paradoxically however, we find
that longitudinal modes will be very difficult to detect due to the large
variance in the pulsar-pulsar correlation patterns for these modes. Existing
upper limits on the power spectrum of pulsar timing residuals imply that the
amplitude of vector longitudinal and scalar longitudinal modes at frequencies
of 1/year are constrained: and , while the bounds on the energy density for a

In Our Shoes or the Protagonist’s? Knowledge, Justification, and Projection
Sackris and Beebe (2014) report the results of a series of studies that seem to show that there are cases in which many people are willing to attribute knowledge to a protagonist even when her belief is unjustified. These results provide some reason to conclude that the folk concept of knowledge does not treat justification as necessary for its deployment. In this paper, we report a series of results that can be seen as supporting this conclusion by going some way towards ruling out an alternative account of Sackris and Beebe’s results—the possibility that the knowledge attributions that they witnessed largely stem from protagonist projection, a phenomenon in language use and interpretation in which the speaker uses words that the relevant protagonist might use to describe her own situation and the listener interprets the speaker accordingly. With that said, we do caution the reader against drawing the conclusion too strongly, on the basis of results like those reported here and by Sackris and Beebe. There are alternative possibilities regarding what drives the observed knowledge attributions in cases of unjustified true belief that must be ruled out before, on the basis of such results, we can conclude with much confidence that the folk concept of knowledge does not treat justification as necessary for its deployment

Partnerships for skills training in the care home sector
Aim: This paper describes an initiative in North East London that aimed to facilitate access to training for care-home staff by using a mobile skills-centre in the form of an adapted bus.
Background: It has proved difficult to take a strategic approach to quality assurance in care homes and the first comprehensive national training strategy for the sector was not published until 2000. Staff value and benefit from training, but organizing the provision of education and training may be problematic, given resource constraints and staffing levels that make it difficult to release staff to go off-site.
Method: Collaboration between the School of Community and Health Sciences, City University London; My Home Life, an initiative led by Help the Aged in collaboration with the National Care Forum and City University London; local care homes; local primary care trusts (PCTs); and the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at City University London and Queen Mary University of London. The project involved facilitation, training in the mobile skills-centre and evaluation through questionnaires.
Findings: The project was successful at a number of different levels: providing training to care-home staff; fostering collaborative relationships between care homes and PCTs; providing a forum to enable a wider educational discussion of care-home needs; and stimulating the planning of future education programmes for care-home staff and of the provision in care homes of student nurse placements
