Physics with Beam Tau-Neutrino Appearance at DUNE

    Get PDF
We explore the capabilities of the upcoming Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) to measure Μτ\nu_\tau charged-current interactions and the associated oscillation probability P(ΜΌ→Μτ)P(\nu_\mu \to \nu_\tau) at its far detector, concentrating on how such results can be used to probe neutrino properties and interactions. DUNE has the potential to identify significantly more Μτ\nu_\tau events than all existing experiments and can use this data sample to nontrivially test the three-massive-neutrinos paradigm by providing complementary measurements to those from the Îœe\nu_e appearance and ΜΌ\nu_\mu disappearance channels. We further discuss the sensitivity of the Μτ\nu_\tau appearance channel to several hypotheses for the physics that may lurk beyond the three-massive-neutrinos paradigm: a non-unitary lepton mixing matrix, the 3+13+1 light neutrinos hypothesis, and the existence of non-standard neutral-current neutrino interactions. Throughout, we also consider the relative benefits of the proposed high-energy tune of the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) beam-line.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, 2 appendice

A Short Travel for Neutrinos in Large Extra Dimensions

Neutrino oscillations successfully explain the flavor transitions observed in neutrinos produced in natural sources like the center of the sun and the earth atmosphere, and also from man-made sources like reactors and accelerators. These oscillations are driven by two mass-squared differences, solar and atmospheric, at the sub-eV scale. However, longstanding anomalies at short-baselines might imply the existence of new oscillation frequencies at the eV-scale and the possibility of this sterile state(s) to mix with the three active neutrinos. One of the many future neutrino programs that are expected to provide a final word on this issue is the Short-Baseline Neutrino Program (SBN) at FERMILAB. In this letter, we consider a specific model of Large Extra Dimensions (LED) which provides interesting signatures of oscillation of extra sterile states. We started re-creating sensitivity analyses for sterile neutrinos in the 3+1 scenario, previously done by the SBN collaboration, by simulating neutrino events in the three SBN detectors from both muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance. Then, we implemented neutrino oscillations as predicted in the LED model and also we have performed sensitivity analysis to the LED parameters. Finally, we studied the SBN power of discriminating between the two models, the 3+1 and the LED. We have found that SBN is sensitive to the oscillations predicted in the LED model and have the potential to constrain the LED parameter space better than any other oscillation experiment, for m1D<0.1 eVm_{1}^D<0.1\,\text{eV}. In case SBN observes a departure from the three active neutrino framework, it also has the power of discriminating between sterile oscillations predicted in the 3+1 framework and the LED ones.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 2 table

Insertion of sustainability concepts in the maintenance strategies to achieve sustainable manufacturing

    Get PDF
Companies adopt sustainable practices in order to improve the economic, environmental and social performance of their operations. This fact does not occur with the same intensity in maintenance operations. By adopting sustainable practices during the implementation of maintenance strategies, there will be mitigation of industrial maintenance impacts on sustainability. However, there are few studies on the integration of sustainability in maintenance activities and few companies adopt sustainable maintenance due to lack of knowledge of the subject and its benefits. This paper aims to show how the concepts of sustainability are being inserted in the maintenance strategies. For this purpose, a literature review and a systematic literature review were performed. It was verified that the concepts of sustainability are integrated into maintenance strategies by means of sustainable criteria, with emphasis on lost production cost, spare parts cost and expenditures associated with energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions (economic dimension), on pollutant emission due to energy consumption during machining/manufacturing (environmental dimension) and on health and safety at work (social dimension). This paper contributes to the dissemination of the theme and motivates the companies to implement sustainable maintenance

ITALIANO. / ENGLISH: This essay gives a general view about economic organization of rural lordships in Trentino during the 13th-15th centuries, with a perspective on the 16th century, based on archival documentation produced by some eminent seigneurial families. The last two paragraphs are about handling and exploitation of wood, mountain and mineral resources, which were important goods of trade between Trentino and neighbour areas of Po Valley, where some rural lordships from Trentino played an active part

Genus Bifidobacterium: taxonomy studies and gene expression analysis on folate pathway

Folates (vitamin B9) are essential water soluble vitamins, whose deficiency in humans may contribute to the onset of several diseases, such as anaemia, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurological problems as well as defects in embryonic development. Human and other mammals are unable to synthesize ex novo folate obtaining it from exogenous sources, via intestinal absorption. Recently the gut microbiota has been identified as an important source of folates and the selection and use of folate producing microorganisms represents an innovative strategy to increase human folate levels. The aim of this thesis was to gain a fundamental understanding of folate metabolism in Bifidobacterium adolescentis. The work was subdivided in three main phases, also aimed to solve different problems encountered working with Bifidobacterium strains. First, a new identification method (based on PCR-RFLP of hsp60 gene) was specifically developed to identify Bifidobacterium strains. Secondly, Bifidobacterium adolescentis biodiversity was explored in order to recognize representing strains of this species to be screened for their folate production ability. Results showed that this species is characterized by a wide variability and support the idea that a possible new taxonomic re-organization would be required. Finally B. adolescentis folate metabolism was studied using a double approach. A quantitative analysis of folate content was complemented by the examination of expression levels of genes involved in folate related pathways. For the normalization process, required to increase the robustness of the qRT-PCR analysis, an appropriate set of reference genes was tested using two different algorithms. Results demonstrate that B.adolescentis strains may represent an endogenous source of natural folate and they could be used to fortify fermented dairy products. This bio-fortification strategy presents many advantages for the consumer, providing native folate forms more bio-available, and not implicated in the discussed controversy concerning the safety of high intake of synthetic folic acid

On The Decaying-Sterile Neutrino Solution to the Electron (Anti)Neutrino Appearance Anomalies

We explore the hypothesis that the unexplained data from LSND and MiniBooNE are evidence for a new, heavy neutrino mass-eigenstate that mixes with the muon-type neutrino and decays into an electron-type neutrino and a new, very light scalar particle. We consider two different decay scenarios, one with Majorana neutrinos, one with Dirac neutrinos; both fit the data equally well. We find a reasonable, albeit not excellent, fit to the data of MiniBooNE and LSND. The decaying-sterile-neutrino hypothesis, however, cleanly evades constraints from disappearance searches and precision measurements of leptonic meson decays, as long as 1 MeV≳m4≳101~{\rm MeV}\gtrsim m_4\gtrsim 10~keV. The SBN program at Fermilab should be able to definitively test the decaying-sterile-neutrino hypothesis.Comment: This version v2 has been accepted for publication in JHEP. The changes from previous version are: inclusion of the data from KARMEN in the analysis, a new subsection about the sensitivity of SBN to nonzero decay effects, an new appendix describing the details of MiniBooNE analysis, additional references and some other minor change

Capabilities and Operational Performance: Case Study in Automotive Supply Chain

    Get PDF
Sharing of operational capabilities in the supply chains brings benefits to the companies involved. However, studies on operational capabilities in the Brazilian supply chain are still non-existent. The current article investigates the effects of operational capabilities on operational performance in the automotive supply chain. An explanatory cross-section survey was employed. The sample used concentrates on the southeast region of Brazil where there is the largest concentration of automakers. Employing the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and regression analysis, the results show that three operational capabilities have positive and significantly operational performance. These operational capabilities are cooperation, improvement and customization
