    Under this project, within a very tight time frame, a fiber-reinforced thermal protection tile called CETEX (CEramic Tile EXperiment) was successfully developed, qualified and realized as flight hardware for the extreme conditions of capsule reentry. Although certain important results were not obtained because of the not fully successful mission, in general an intense technology development was achieved and has already led to a high gain in know-how. Some of the successes are: development and first use of ceramic high-temperature stand-offs, realization of a fiber ceramic structure with a complex shape by first use of NC machining during the ceramic manufacturing process, development of engineering solutions for the integration of sensors (RAFLEX, PYREX, thermocouples) taking into account the extreme thermal and mechanical (vibration) operational loads, extension of the operational limits of our C/C-SiC material beyond previous temperature limits, tests in plasma wind tunnels were carried out at temperatures of up to 2,700 C. In addition to this, a variety of spin-offs such as fiber-reinforced ceramic brake systems were supported by this development work. Locating the EXPRESS capsule during the preparation of this report, and available information and images seem to confirm the proper functioning of CETEX.
