OPE analysis of the nucleon scattering tensor including weak interaction and finite mass effects
We perform a systematic operator product expansion of the most general form
of the nucleon scattering tensor including electro-magnetic and
weak interaction processes. Finite quark masses are taken into account and a
number of higher-twist corrections are included. In this way we derive
relations between the lowest moments of all 14 structure functions and matrix
elements of local operators. Besides reproducing well-known results, new sum
rules for parity-violating polarized structure functions and new mass

What Users Ask a Search Engine: Analyzing One Billion Russian Question Queries
We analyze the question queries submitted to a large commercial web search engine to get insights about what people ask, and to better tailor the search results to the usersā needs. Based on a dataset of about one billion question queries submitted during the year 2012, we investigate askersā querying behavior with the support of automatic query categorization. While the importance of question queries is likely to increase, at present they only make up 3ā4% of the total search traffic. Since questions are such a small part of the query stream and are more likely to be unique than shorter queries, clickthrough information is typically rather sparse. Thus, query categorization methods based on the categories of clicked web documents do not work well for questions. As an alternative, we propose a robust question query classification method that uses the labeled questions from a large community question answering platform (CQA) as a training set. The resulting classifier is then transferred to the web search questions. Even though questions on CQA platforms tend to be different to web search questions, our categorization method proves competitive with strong baselines with respect to classification accuracy. To show the scalability of our proposed method we apply the classifiers to about one billion question queries and discuss the trade-offs between performance and accuracy that different classification models offer. HOXA10 controls osteoblastogenesis by directly activating bone regulatory and phenotypic genes
HOXA10 is necessary for embryonic patterning of skeletal elements, but its function in bone formation beyond this early developmental stage is unknown. Here we show that HOXA10 contributes to osteogenic lineage determination through activation of Runx2 and directly regulates osteoblastic phenotypic genes. In response to bone morphogenic protein BMP2, Hoxa10 is rapidly induced and functions to activate the Runx2 transcription factor essential for bone formation. A functional element with the Hox core motif was characterized for the bone-related Runx2 P1 promoter. HOXA10 also activates other osteogenic genes, including the alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, and bone sialoprotein genes, and temporally associates with these target gene promoters during stages of osteoblast differentiation prior to the recruitment of RUNX2. Exogenous expression and small interfering RNA knockdown studies establish that HOXA10 mediates chromatin hyperacetylation and trimethyl histone K4 (H3K4) methylation of these genes, correlating to active transcription. HOXA10 therefore contributes to early expression of osteogenic genes through chromatin remodeling. Importantly, HOXA10 can induce osteoblast genes in Runx2 null cells, providing evidence for a direct role in mediating osteoblast differentiation independent of RUNX2. We propose that HOXA10 activates RUNX2 in mesenchymal cells, contributing to the onset of osteogenesis, and that HOXA10 subsequently supports bone formation by direct regulation of osteoblast phenotypic genes. <br/
Diffractive charged meson pair production
We investigate the possibility to measure the nonforward gluon distribution
function by means of diffractively produced \pi^+\pi^- and K^+K^- pairs in
polarized lepton nucleon scattering. The resulting cross sections are small and
are dominated by the gluonic contribution. We find relatively large spin
asymmetries, both for \pi^+\pi^- and for K^+K^- pairs.Comment: 15 pages, version with changed kinematical cuts, to be pubished in

Observational manifestations of solar magneto-convection -- center-to-limb variation
We present the first center-to-limb G-band images synthesized from high
resolution simulations of solar magneto-convection. Towards the limb the
simulations show "hilly" granulation with dark bands on the far side, bright
granulation walls and striated faculae, similar to observations. At disk center
G-band bright points are flanked by dark lanes. The increased brightness in
magnetic elements is due to their lower density compared with the surrounding
intergranular medium. One thus sees deeper layers where the temperature is
higher. At a given geometric height, the magnetic elements are cooler than the
surrounding medium. In the G-band, the contrast is further increased by the
destruction of CH in the low density magnetic elements. The optical depth unity
surface is very corrugated. Bright granules have their continuum optical depth
unity 80 km above the mean surface, the magnetic elements 200-300 km below. The
horizontal temperature gradient is especially large next to flux
concentrations. When viewed at an angle, the deep magnetic elements optical
surface is hidden by the granules and the bright points are no longer visible,
except where the "magnetic valleys" are aligned with the line of sight. Towards
the limb, the low density in the strong magnetic elements causes unit
line-of-sight optical depth to occur deeper in the granule walls behind than
for rays not going through magnetic elements and variations in the field
strength produce a striated appearance in the bright granule walls.Comment: To appear in ApJL. 6 pages 4 figure
Routine repeat head CT may not be necessary for patients with mild TBI.
Background:Routine repeat cranial CT (RHCT) is standard of care for CT-verified traumatic brain injury (TBI). Despite mixed evidence, those with mild TBI are subject to radiation and expense from serial CT scans. Thus, we investigated the necessity and utility of RHCT for patients with mild TBI. We hypothesized that repeat head CT in these patients would not alter patient care or outcomes. Methods:We retrospectively studied patients suffering from mild TBI (Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score 13-15) and treated at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center from November 2014 through January 2015. The primary outcome was the need for surgical intervention. Outcomes were compared using paired Student's t-test, and stratified by injury on initial CT, GCS change, demographics, and presenting vital signs (mean Ā± SD). Results:Eighty-five patients met inclusion criteria with an average initial GCS score=14.6Ā±0.57. Our center sees about 2800 patients with TBI per year, or about 230 per month. This includes patients with concussions. This sample represents about 30% of patients with TBI seen during the study period. Ten patients required operation (four based on initial CT and others for worsening GCS, headaches, large unresolving injury). There was progression of injury on repeat CT scan in only two patients that required operation, and this accompanied clinical deterioration. The mean brain Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) score was 4.8Ā±0.3 for surgical patients on initial CT scan compared with 3.4Ā±0.6 (P<0.001) for non-surgical patients. Initial CT subdural hematoma size was 1.1Ā±0.6ācm for surgical patients compared with 0.49Ā±0.3ācm (P=0.05) for non-surgical patients. There was no significant difference between intervention groups in terms of other intracranial injuries, demographics, vital signs, or change in GCS. Overall, 75 patients that did not require surgical intervention received RHCT. At 51ā000 was spent on unnecessary imaging ($367 000/year, extrapolated). Discussion:In an environment of increased scrutiny on healthcare expenditures, it is necessary to question dogma and eliminate unnecessary cost. Our data questions the use of routine repeat head CT scans in every patient with anatomic TBI and suggests that clinically stable patients with small injury can simply be followed clinically. Development of Protacs to Target Cancer-promoting Proteins for Ubiquitination and Degradation
The proteome contains hundreds of proteins that in theory could be excellent therapeutic targets for the treatment of human diseases. However, many of these proteins are from functional classes that have never been validated as viable candidates for the development of small molecule inhibitors. Thus, to exploit fully the potential of the Human Genome Project to advance human medicine, there is a need to develop generic methods of inhibiting protein activity that do not rely on the target proteinās function. We previously demonstrated that a normally stable protein, methionine aminopeptidase-2 or MetAP-2, could be artificially targeted to an Skp1-Cullin-F-box (SCF) ubiquitin ligase complex for ubiquitination and degradation through a chimeric bridging molecule or Protac (proteolysis targeting chimeric molecule). This Protac consisted of an SCFĆ-TRCP-binding phosphopeptide derived from I{kappa}B{alpha} linked to ovalicin, which covalently binds MetAP-2. In this study, we employed this approach to target two different proteins, the estrogen (ER) and androgen (AR) receptors, which have been implicated in the progression of breast and prostate cancer, respectively. We show here that an estradiol-based Protac can enforce the ubiquitination and degradation of the {alpha} isoform of ER in vitro, and a dihydroxytestosterone-based Protac introduced into cells promotes the rapid disappearance of AR in a proteasome-dependent manner. Future improvements to this technology may yield a general approach to treat a number of human diseases, including cancer
Research review: young people leaving care
This paper reviews the international research on young people leaving care. Set in the context of a social exclusion framework, it explores young people's accelerated and compressed transitions to adulthood, and discusses the development and classification of leaving care services in responding to their needs. It then considers the evidence from outcome studies and argues that adopting a resilience framework suggests that young people leaving care may fall into three groups: young people 'moving on', 'survivors' and 'victims'. In concluding, it argues that these three pathways are associated with the quality of care young people receive, their transitions from care and the support they receive after care
Solar Oscillations and Convection: II. Excitation of Radial Oscillations
Solar p-mode oscillations are excited by the work of stochastic,
non-adiabatic, pressure fluctuations on the compressive modes. We evaluate the
expression for the radial mode excitation rate derived by Nordlund and Stein
(Paper I) using numerical simulations of near surface solar convection. We
first apply this expression to the three radial modes of the simulation and
obtain good agreement between the predicted excitation rate and the actual mode
damping rates as determined from their energies and the widths of their
resolved spectral profiles. We then apply this expression for the mode
excitation rate to the solar modes and obtain excellent agreement with the low
l damping rates determined from GOLF data. Excitation occurs close to the
surface, mainly in the intergranular lanes and near the boundaries of granules
(where turbulence and radiative cooling are large). The non-adiabatic pressure
fluctuations near the surface are produced by small instantaneous local
imbalances between the divergence of the radiative and convective fluxes near
the solar surface. Below the surface, the non-adiabatic pressure fluctuations
are produced primarily by turbulent pressure fluctuations (Reynolds stresses).
The frequency dependence of the mode excitation is due to effects of the mode
structure and the pressure fluctuation spectrum. Excitation is small at low
frequencies due to mode properties -- the mode compression decreases and the
mode mass increases at low frequency. Excitation is small at high frequencies
due to the pressure fluctuation spectrum -- pressure fluctuations become small
at high frequencies because they are due to convection which is a long time

Effect of Intermolecular Interactions between CH Frequencies on the Infrared Spectra of NāParaffins and Polythene
A systematic study has been made of the infrared absorption band near 725 cmā1 which arises from the rocking vibration of methylene groups in nāparaffins and in polyethylene. In unoriented crystals of nāparaffins, this band exhibits two components of equal intensity below the transition point; above the transition temperature and in the liquid state only the higher frequency component is found. In solid coldādrawn polyethylene the two components are of unequal intensity, the low frequency component being the stronger; in liquid polyethylene only the lower frequency component is found. Studies were made of polyethylene in various states of crystallinity and orientation, using both polarized and unpolarized radiation. The results obtained can be consistently interpreted, if the higher frequency component is attributed to crystallites in the polyethylene and the lower frequency component is assumed to be due partly to the crystalline and partly to the amorphous form of the polyethylene.
