Youth drinking in public places: the production of drinking spaces in and outside nightlife areas
This article explores youth drinking in Zurich, Switzerland, on both public squares away from nightlife areas, referred to as ‘square street drinking’ and on the street within the vicinity of nightclubs, defined as ‘club street drinking’. Taking a relational space approach, the analysis adds a social perspective to the dominant economic-political perspective to drinking in urban nightlife zones. The results suggest that the normative landscapes of drinking are constructed differently: the same regulation by police and social workers works differently between the two areas both in terms of inclusion and exclusion as well as in terms of how the material and social dimensions interact. Production and regulation are dependent on how young people participate in these processes. This finding suggests that it would be fruitful to develop a regulation approach on drinking in the post-industrial city that is sensitive to young people as co-producers of space
Wohnstandortwahl der «Creative Class» in der Agglomeration Zürich
Richard Florida focuses on the selected determinants affecting the choice of residence by the creative class at the regional level. He defines these determinants with the concept “quality of place”. The question arises of whether this approach can be transferred to a subregional level. In the empirical research at the subregional level, variables are added to “quality of place” and the creative class is differentiated into sectors.
In this article, Florida’s assessment is applied to the subregional level, as is usual for assessments used to explain the choice of residence location. This allows an investigation of which location factors have a deciding influence on the residence location choices of the creative
class in the Zurich agglomeration and what differences, if any, can be found between the various branches.
An empirical analysis of the data for the agglomeration of Zurich in 2000 supports the transferability of Florida’s approach to the subregional level. However, it is evident that the differentiation of the creative class and the addition of other determinants to “quality of place” are essential
Characteristics associated with maltreatment types in children referred to a hospital protection team
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to describe characteristics associated with maltreatment types in children referred to the child protection team at the University Children's Hospital Zürich. Since 2003, the child protection team has registered data on each case in a standardized form. METHODS: To examine differences in gender, age, nationality, and socioeconomic status by type of maltreatment, regression analyses were conducted for the 1,484 cases that were referred from 2003 to 2006. RESULTS: The most common types of referred maltreatment were sexual (38%) and physical maltreatment (31%) with mean ages of 8.4 and 7 years, respectively. Compared to physical maltreatment, where gender distribution was equal, there was a higher risk for girls to become victims of sexual maltreatment. Younger children were at higher risk for neglect (mean age 5 years). Low socioeconomic status increased the risk for physical as compared to sexual maltreatment. However, whether the child was of Swiss or of foreign nationality was not associated with an increased risk for any type of maltreatment when controlling for socioeconomic status. CONCLUSION: As this study is one of a few to analyze characteristics in child maltreatment referred to a hospital child protection team, further research is needed. To improve international comparability, thorough documentation of the cases is encouraged
