2007 Homicide Report: An Analysis of Homicides in Oakland from January through December, 2007

In past years Urban Strategies Council has produced quarterly or biannual reports on homicides in Oakland using detailed data provided by the Oakland Police Department's Homicide Section. Due to staffing shortages, the Oakland police Department is no longer able to provide this detailed data to the Council. As a result the 2007 Homicide Report uses data gleaned from public sources and some aggregated tables from the OPD's official report. From these data we have created this report on the characteristics of the 127 homicides that occurred in Oakland from January 1 through December 31, 2007. This report presents annual data from 2007 and shows how characteristics of homicides in Oakland changed from 2006 to 2007 and how 2007 homicides compare with the five -- year averages from 2003-2007.This report summarizes available information such as victim demographic characteristics (suspect details are less complete and less precise), locations and times of the incidents. Comparing 2007 data to a five-year average of homicides helps to provide a context for understanding whether there are emerging patterns that differ substantially from the patterns in prior years.This year sees the inclusion of some additional types of data relating to the nature of the homicides taking place in Oakland such as premises and types of weapons involved

School Food Services and Childhood Obesity: Is there a link?

Childhood overweight and obesity have increased three-fold since 1980, and there is minimal evidence of any leveling off. Research has found that many school food programs are not sufficiently providing adequate nutrients and providing far too many calories and fat. Competitive foods are widely available in many schools which may possibly contribute to increased weight and body mass index (BMI) in students. This has put school food programs under scrutiny as a contributor to the childhood obesity crisis being faced. Schools can promote healthier eating by improving school meals, but most are forced to sell competitive foods to support their programs. Several programs have proven that children tend to gravitate towards healthier option when given the opportunity. Leadership in the area of school nutrition may improve the quality of nutritional meals available in schools. This paper proposes the possible link between school food service programs and the upward trend in childhood overweight and obesity

Birds of Wapello County, Iowa

Wapello County is located in the southeast part of Iowa with one county between it and the Iowa-Missouri line and three counties east of it between it and the Mississippi river. It is bounded on the north by Mahaska and Keokuk Counties, on the east by Jefferson County, on the south by Davis County, and on the west by Monroe County. Its county seat is Ottumwa. The Des Moines River flows diagonally across the county from northwest to southeast. It is quite heavily timbered for most of its course, affording an excellent route for the migration of birds common to the timbered regions. As its tributaries in the immediate vicinity of Ottumwa it has Sugar Creek on the eastern edge of the city, Harrow\u27s Branch on the western edge and Bear Creek flowing into the river from the South. As the river approaches the city from the northwest, it makes a great bend to the east, returning to its diagonal course at about the centre of the city. The land in the interior of this bend has been platted in part as an addition to Ottumwa and is known as Central Addition. At the time of my observations, Central Addition had not been developed to any great extent, and as the land it included was quite low and marshy, a great thicket of willow saplings and underbrush had grown up making shelter for a great variety of birds in their season, especially for the warblers. This was the best locality close in to the city for bird study, and I spent much time there

The mechanical behavior of cross-rolled beryllium sheet

In response to the failure of a conical section of the Insat C satellite during certification testing, the use of beryllium for payload structures, particularly in sheet product form, is being reevaluated. A test program was initiated to study the tensile, shear, and out-of-plane failure modes of beryllium cross-rolled sheet and to apply data to the development of an appropriate failure criterion. Tensile test results indicated that sanding the surface of beryllium sheet has no significant effect on yield strength but can produce a profound reduction in ultimate strength and results obtained by finite element analysis. Critical examination of these test results may contribute to the modification of a JSC policy for the use of beryllium in orbiter and payload structures

The Commission on Religion in Appalachia and the Twentieth-Century Emphasis on Rural Identity

The Commission on Religion in Appalachia (CORA) was a mission organization founded in 1965 to bring economic and religious uplift to Appalachia. CORA focused on rural areas and relied on prevalent stereotypes to define the region as homogenous and backward, and its definition permeated its mission work. CORA members were influenced by 1931 and 1958 religious surveys that largely reinforced established Appalachian stereotypes of poverty and isolation. However, Appalachia\u27s urban areas offered a broader definition and understanding of the region. By 1900 there were examples of Jewish communities in Appalachian urban areas that persisted throughout the twentieth century. Urban areas also experienced trends that were seen throughout the south and the rest of the United States. CORA was a mission organization that was founded on an Appalachian identity highlighted by stereotypes of rural homogeneity and poverty, and they excluded urban areas from their definition
