Swelling of PDMS Networks in Solvent Vapours; Applications for Passive RFID Wireless Sensors

The relative degree of swelling of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) network in organic vapours is demonstrated to be related to the chemical and physical properties of the organic compounds. The swelling ratio, based on volume change, QV, is directly correlated with the Hansen solubility parameters, dd, dp and dh and the vapour pressures of the organic vapours employed. A practical use for such PDMS networks in combination with an understanding of the relationship is demonstrated by the use of PDMS as a mechanical actuator in a prototype wireless RFID passive sensor. The text The friendship of an artist and a great scientist. The letters of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz to Bronisław Malinowski reveals that the letter is one of more interesting literary genres which takes a prominent place in the realm where the private meets the public. It is exemplified in the private correspondence between Witkacy and Malinowski, both of whom were well-known, public figures. These personal notes, sent to a close friend, revealed their essence after being publicly disclosed. Making private matters (in this case letters to a friend) public gives the readers a lot of pleasure. The readers get another piece of the puzzle made of the life and works of an intriguing artist. Unquestionably, this publication caused, among other things, the debunking of a myth and setting straight the image of Witkacy which was deep-rooted in the general consciousness. He was liberated from the legend, which distorted the portrait of the author of The Shoemakers. The letters to a childhood friend allowed the readers to discover the artist’s hidden face, which had hitherto been revealed only to his closest, most important and most faithful friends
