    PROSPECÇÃO TECNOLÓGICA SOBRE AS COMPOSIÇÕES DE DERIVADOS DE CELULOSE E CELULOSE NA ÁREA MEDICINAL

    Nos últimos anos há grande interesse mundial em novas tecnologias que possibilitem a utilização de produtos com menor impacto ambiental. Composições de derivados de celulose e celulose têm gerado materiais para a área medicinal, entre outras. Este trabalho consiste no monitoramento tecnológico das composições de derivados de celulose e celulose na área medicinal através de patentes com documentos desde 1964. Existem 22 países que possuem patentes na área, sendo o cenário largamente dominado pelos Estados Unidos (43% dos documentos). São 110 detentores da tecnologia, sendo 55% empresas, 43% pessoas físicas e 4% universidades. Entre os 6 maiores detentores da tecnologia 95% , são empresas e apenas 5% são pessoas físicas

    Chaotropic substances and their effects on the mechanical strength of Portland cement-based materials

    Portland cement–based materials are present in our everyday life. Over the last two decades, important developments have been made to improve their mechanical strength, mainly through microstructural design. In addition, another promising parameter still remains in the early stages of understanding: that of adhesion. Recently, interdisciplinary researchers have considered the issue of water confinement by the hydrated cementitious surfaces. It could contribute to increase the adhesion and strength in these materials. On the other hand, ionic and non–ionic chaotropic substances might be able to disorder the structure of such special water. The results presented in this paper show important effects of these chaotropic substances on the strength of cementitious materials. They highlight the role of the confined water on the adhesion, when the microstructural parameters are kept constant. More than contributing to the fundamental understanding of adhesion within cement paste, these results provide basic insights on in-situ nanotechnology.FAPESP (02/10492–3)CNPq (151329/2007–9

    Aiming at the maintenance of the prominence of the South Minas coffee culture in the national scenario, the state of Minas Gerais, by means of its public institutions, has created a regional development program to meet the main problems concerning regional coffee production. With that purpose, the Southern Minas Ambit of Coffee culture was established, in search of the following objectives: to improve the quality of coffee, keep and create new employments, increase yield, reduce production costs and, as a consequence, improve the coffee farmers’ income. Nevertheless, in spite of the importance of such program as a subside for the solution of the problems concerning to coffee production of the Southern and Southeastern regions of the state of Minas Gerais, it has not, as of yet, been evaluated. Therefore, this work was conducted with a view to evaluating the Southern Minas Ambit of Coffee Culture, by taking into account a methodological approach oriented by different research methods as to the results achieved. By this research, it was stressed that the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods proved to be an adequate and complementary approach to extract data and evaluate the program under focus.     Immunological response in mice bearing LM3 breast tumor undergoing Pulchellin treatment

    Background: Ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIP) have been studied in the search for toxins that could be used as immunotoxins for cancer treatment. Pulchellin, a type 2 RIP, is suggested to induce immune responses that have a role in controlling cancer. Methods: The percentage of dendritic cells and CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in the spleen (flow cytometry), cytokines’ release by PECs and splenocytes (ELISA) and nitric oxide production by PECs (Griess assay) were determined from tumor-bearing mice injected intratumorally with 0.1 ml of pulchellin at 0.75 μg/kg of body weight. Statistical analysis was performed by one-way ANOVA with Tukey’s post hoc test. Results: Pulchellin-treated mice showed significant immune system activation, characterized by increased release of IFN-γ and Th2 cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10), while IL-6 and TGF-β levels were decreased. There was also an increase in macrophage’s activation, as denoted by the higher percentage of macrophages expressing adhesion and costimulatory molecules (CD54 and CD80, respectively). Conclusions: Our results suggest that pulchellin is promising as an adjuvant in breast cancer treatment.Fil: de Matos, Djamile Cordeiro.     Características agronômicas do milho e recuperação de nitrogênio do fertilizante durante a safra e a safrinha

    The objective of this work was to evaluate corn agronomic traits in a cultivation subjected to different N rates, during the fall–winter (off-season) and spring–summer crop seasons, and N recovery from fertilizer. The experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design with four replicates, in a 5x2 factorial arrangement, with the following treatments: five N topdressing rates – 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 kg ha-1 –, using urea as source; and two crop seasons, fall–winter and spring–summer. The following variables were determined: plant height, height of the first ear insertion, number of grains per ear, diameter and length of ear, 1,000-grain weight, N concentration in the leaves and grains, grain-protein concentration, grain yield, N recovery from fertilizer, and soil-N supply. Nitrogen rates in the fertilizer in the fall–winter season had no effect on grain yield, although corn agronomic traits showed a greater reliance on fertilizer-N rates in that season than in the spring–summer, which is a season associated to a greater capacity of soil-N supply to plants. The quantification of soil-N supply enabled knowing the nutrient dynamics during the fall–winter and the spring–summer seasons, which may be useful to guide N fertilization of corn.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar características agronômicas do milho em um cultivo submetido a diferentes doses de N, nas safras de outono–inverno (safrinha) e primavera–verão, e a recuperação do N do fertilizante. O experimento foi disposto em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, em arranjo fatorial 5x2, com os seguintes tratamentos: cinco doses de N em cobertura – 0, 30, 60, 90 e 120 kg ha-1 –, com uso de ureia como fonte; e duas estações de cultivo, outono–inverno e primavera–verão. As seguintes variáveis foram determinadas: altura de planta, altura da inserção da primeira espiga, número de grãos por espiga, diâmetro e comprimento da espiga, massa de 1.000 grãos, concentração de N nas folhas e nos grãos, concentração de proteína nos grãos, produtividade de grãos, recuperação de N do fertilizante e suprimento de N pelo solo. As taxas de N do fertilizante na estação outono–inverno não influenciaram a produtividade de grãos, embora as características agronômicas do milho tenham apresentado maior dependência do N do fertilizante naquela estação do que na primavera–verão, que é uma estação associada a uma maior capacidade do solo de fornecer N para as plantas. A quantificação do suprimento de N pelo solo permitiu saber a dinâmica do nutriente durante a safrinha e a safra de primavera–verão, o que pode ser útil para guiar a fertilização nitrogenada do milho

    Landsat sub-pixel land cover dynamics in the Brazilian Amazon

    The Brazilian Amazon land cover changes rapidly due to anthropogenic and climate drivers. Deforestation and forest disturbances associated with logging and fires, combined with extreme droughts, warmer air, and surface temperatures, have led to high tree mortality and harmful net carbon emissions in this region. Regional attempts to characterize land cover dynamics in this region focused on one or two anthropogenic drivers (i.e., deforestation and forest degradation). Land cover studies have also used a limited temporal scale (i.e., 10–15 years), focusing mainly on global and country-scale forest change. In this study, we propose a novel approach to characterize and measure land cover dynamics in the Amazon biome. First, we defined 10 fundamental land cover classes: forest, flooded forest, shrubland, natural grassland, pastureland, cropland, outcrop, bare and impervious, wetland, and water. Second, we mapped the land cover based on the compositional abundance of Landsat sub-pixel information that makes up these land cover classes: green vegetation (GV), non-photosynthetic vegetation, soil, and shade. Third, we processed all Landsat scenes with <50% cloud cover. Then, we applied a step-wise random forest machine learning algorithm and empirical decision rules to classify intra-annual and annual land cover classes between 1985 and 2022. Finally, we estimated the yearly land cover changes in forested and non-forested ecosystems and characterized the major change drivers. In 2022, forest covered 78.6% (331.9 Mha) of the Amazon biome, with 1.4% of secondary regrowth in more than 5 years. Total herbaceous covered 15.6% of the area, with the majority of pastureland (13.5%) and the remaining natural grassland. Water was the third largest land cover class with 2.4%, followed by cropland (1.2%) and shrubland (0.4%), with 89% overall accuracy. Most of the forest changes were driven by pasture and cropland conversion, and there are signs that climate change is the primary driver of the loss of aquatic ecosystems. Existing carbon emission models disregard the types of land cover changes presented in the studies. The twenty first century requires a more encompassing and integrated approach to monitoring anthropogenic and climate changes in the Amazon biome for better mitigation, adaptation, and conservation policies

    Epigenetic regulation of nitric oxide synthase 2, inducible (Nos2) by NLRC4 inflammasomes involves PARP1 cleavage

    Nitric oxide synthase 2, inducible (Nos2) expression is necessary for the microbicidal activity of macrophages. However, NOS2 over-activation causes multiple inflammatory disorders, suggesting a tight gene regulation is necessary. Using cytosolic flagellin as a model for inflammasome-dependent NOS2 activation, we discovered a surprising new role for NLRC4/caspase-1 axis in regulating chromatin accessibility of the Nos2 promoter. We found that activation of two independent mechanisms is necessary for NOS2 expression by cytosolic flagellin: caspase-1 and NF-kappa B activation. NF-kappa B activation was necessary, but not sufficient, for NOS2 expression. Conversely, caspase-1 was necessary for NOS2 expression, but dispensable for NF-kappa B activation, indicating that this protease acts downstream NF-kappa B activation. We demonstrated that epigenetic regulation of Nos2 by caspase-1 involves cleavage of the chromatin regulator PARP1 (also known as ARTD1) and chromatin accessibility of the NF-kappa B binding sites located at the Nos2 promoter. Remarkably, caspase-1-mediated Nos2 transcription and NO production contribute to the resistance of macrophages to Salmonella typhimurium infection.     Canibalismo, desempenho de crescimento e composição corporal de juvenis de trairão em diferentes fotoperíodos

    The objective of this work was to determine the effect of photoperiod on the cannibalism, growth, and body composition of giant trahira (Hoplias intermedius) juveniles. A completely randomized design was employed, with four photoperiods - 0L:24D, 6L:18D, 12L:12D, and 18L:6D, hours of light (L): dark (D) - and four replicates, for a period of 90 days. The analyzed parameters were: cannibalism, growth in weight and length, food consumption, feed conversion, protein efficiency rate, muscle growth, and body composition (moisture, lipid, ash, and crude protein). Fish from the 12L:12D photoperiod showed the highest survival rate and no cannibalism, as well as a great uniformity for length and mass values at the end of the experiment. The best photoperiod for giant trahira juveniles is 12L:12D, as these fish showed growth uniformity and no cannibalism, while fish from the 6L:18D and 18L:6D groups had a greater diameter of white muscle fibers and a higher frequency of greater diameter fibers. Giant trahira showed the lowest value for lipids at 6L:18D and the highest value at 12L:12D. Photoperiod affects survival and cannibalism; regarding body composition, only lipids are influenced by photoperiod.O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o efeito do fotoperíodo sobre o canibalismo, o crescimento e a composição corporal de juvenis de trairão (Hoplias intermedius). Um delineamento inteiramente casualizado foi empregado, com quatro fotoperíodos - 0L:24D, 6L:18D, 12L:12D e 18L:6D horas de luz (L) por horas de escuridão (D) - e quatro repetições, pelo período de 90 dias. Os parâmetros analisados foram: canibalismo, crescimento em peso e comprimento, consumo alimentar, conversão alimentar, taxa de eficiência proteica, crescimento muscular e composição corporal (umidade, lipídios, cinzas e proteína bruta). Os peixes do fotoperíodo 12L:12D apresentaram maior taxa de sobrevivência e nenhum canibalismo, bem como grande uniformidade nos valores de comprimento e massa ao final do experimento. O melhor fotoperíodo para juvenis de trairão é 12L:12D, uma vez que os peixes mostraram uniformidade de crescimento e nenhum canibalismo, enquanto peixes dos grupos 6L:18D e 18L:6D apresentaram maior diâmetro de fibras musculares brancas e maior frequência de fibras de maior diâmetro. Os peixes apresentaram menor valor de lipídios no fotoperíodo 6L:18D, e o maior valor no 12L:12D. O fotoperíodo afeta a sobrevivência e o canibalismo; quanto à composição corporal, somente os lípidos são influenciados pelo fotoperíodo

    Mismatch between midline shift and hematoma thickness as a prognostic factor of mortality in patients sustaining acute subdural hematoma.

    BACKGROUND: Acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) is a traumatic lesion commonly found secondary to traumatic brain injury. Radiological findings on CT, such as hematoma thickness (HT) and structures midline shift (MLS), have an important prognostic role in this disease. The relationship between HT and MLS has been rarely studied in the literature. Thus, this study aimed to assess the prognostic accuracy of the difference between MLS and HT for acute outcomes in patients with ASDH in a low-income to middle-income country. METHODS: This was a post-hoc analysis of a prospective cohort study conducted in a university-associated tertiary-level hospital in Brazil. The TRIPOD (Transparent Reporting of a multivariable prediction model for Individual Prognosis or Diagnosis) statement guidelines were followed. The difference values between MLS and HT (Zumkeller index, ZI) were divided into three categories (3). Logistic regression analyses were performed to reveal the OR of categorized ZI in predicting primary outcome measures. A Cox regression was also performed and the results were presented through HR. The discriminative ability of three multivariate models including clinical and radiological variables (ZI, Rotterdam score, and Helsinki score) was demonstrated. RESULTS: A total of 114 patients were included. Logistic regression demonstrated an OR value equal to 8.12 for the ZI >3 category (OR 8.12, 95% CI 1.16 to 40.01; p=0.01), which proved to be an independent predictor of mortality in the adjusted model for surgical intervention, age, and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score. Cox regression analysis demonstrated that this category was associated with 14-day survival (HR 2.92, 95% CI 1.38 to 6.16; p=0.005). A multivariate analysis performed for three models including age and GCS with categorized ZI or Helsinki or Rotterdam score demonstrated area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values of 0.745, 0.767, and 0.808, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The present study highlights the potential usefulness of the difference between MLS and HT as a prognostic variable in patients with ASDH.
