Military activities in Matamoros during the Mexican Revolution, 1910–1915
The 1910 Mexican Revolution is among the bloodiest civil wars of the twentieth century. Throughout Mexico, battles broke out among emerging revolutionary factions. Fighting occurred along Mexico\u27s northern border. Military activity also spilled unto US territory.
Several works have examined the Revolution\u27s effect on American border towns. The impact that the war had on Mexican border towns has been largely overlooked. This thesis will provide a Mexican border perspective of the Mexican Revolution. It traces military activity in Matamoros, Tamaulipas from 1910 to 1915. The study also explores Matamoros\u27 strategic importance to the military factions that fought to achieve control over this border city
Recent developments in nuclear structure theory: an outlook on the muonic atom program
The discovery of the proton-radius puzzle and the subsequent deuteron-radius
puzzle is fueling an on-going debate on possible explanations for the
difference in the observed radii obtained from muonic atoms and from
electron-nucleus systems. Atomic nuclei have a complex internal structure that
must be taken into account when analyzing experimental spectroscopic results.
Ab initio nuclear structure theory provided the so far most precise estimates
of important corrections to the Lamb shift in muonic atoms and is well poised
to also investigate nuclear structure corrections to the hyperfine splitting in
muonic atoms. Independently on whether the puzzle is due to
beyond-the-standard-model physics or not, nuclear structure corrections are a
necessary theoretical input to any experimental extraction of electric and
magnetic radii from precise muonic atom measurements.
Here, we review the status of the calculations performed by the TRIUMF-Hebrew
University group, focusing on the deuteron, and discuss preliminary results on
magnetic sum rules calculated with two-body currents at next-to-leading order.
Two-body currents will be an important ingredient in future calculations of
nuclear structure corrections to the hyperfine splitting in muonic atoms.Comment: 10 pages, accepted proceedings of the "55th International Winter

sistema educativo (Touron Figueroa, 2000).

Microwave Treatment for Cardiac Arrhythmias
NASA seeks to transfer the NASA developed microwave ablation technology, designed for the treatment of ventricular tachycardia (irregular heart beat), to industry. After a heart attack, many cells surrounding the resulting scar continue to live but are abnormal electrically; they may conduct impulses unusually slowly or fire when they would typically be silent. These diseased areas might disturb smooth signaling by forming a reentrant circuit in the muscle. The objective of microwave ablation is to heat and kill these diseased cells to restore appropriate electrical activity in the heart. This technology is a method and apparatus that provides for propagating microwave energy into heart tissues to produce a desired temperature profile therein at tissue depths sufficient for thermally ablating arrhythmogenic cardiac tissue while preventing excessive heating of surrounding tissues, organs, and blood. A wide bandwidth double-disk antenna is effective for this purpose over a bandwidth of about six gigahertz. A computer simulation provides initial screening capabilities for an antenna such as antenna, frequency, power level, and power application duration. The simulation also allows optimization of techniques for specific patients or conditions. In comparison with other methods that involve direct-current pulses or radio frequencies below 1 GHz, this method may prove more effective in treating ventricular tachycardia. This is because the present method provides for greater control of the location, cross-sectional area, and depth of a lesion via selection of the location and design of the antenna and the choice of microwave power and frequency
Improved estimates of the nuclear structure corrections in D
We calculate the nuclear structure corrections to the Lamb shift in muonic
deuterium by using state-of-the-art nucleon-nucleon potentials derived from
chiral effective field theory. Our calculations complement previous theoretical
work obtained from phenomenological potentials and the zero range
approximation. The study of the chiral convergence order-by-order and the
dependence on cutoff variations allows us to improve the estimates on the
nuclear structure corrections and the theoretical uncertainty coming from
nuclear potentials. This will enter the determination of the nuclear radius
from ongoing muonic deuterium experiments at PSI.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 3 table
Design of Round-trip Trajectories to Near-Earth Asteroids Utilizing a Lunar Flyby
There are currently over 7,700 known Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs), and more are being discovered on a continual basis. Current models predict that the actual order of magnitude of the NEA population may range from 10' to 10 6 . The close proximity of NEA orbits to Earth's orbit makes it possible to design short duration round-trip trajectories to NEAs under the proper conditions. In previous work, 59 potentially accessible NEAs were identified for missions that depart Earth between the years 2016 and 2050 and have round-trip flight times of a year or less. We now present a new method for designing round-trip trajectories to NEAs in which the Moon's gravity aids the outbound trajectory via a lunar flyby. In some cases this gravity assist can reduce the overall spacecraft propellant required for the mission, which in turn can allow NEAs to be reached which would otherwise be inaccessible to a given mission architecture. Results are presented for a specific case study on NEA 2003 LN6
CSR Policies: Effects on Labour Productivity in Spanish Micro and Small Manufacturing Companies
This paper analyses empirical evidence of efforts to enable Spanish micro and small manufacturing companies to boost their labour productivity rates through the development of the main pillars of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies. This study aims to develop new approaches and sensibilities towards work from an ethical, values (virtues) and CSR perspective, showing how internal dimensions of CSR, such those related to relationships with employees and responsibility in processes and product quality, can improve labour performance and labour efficiency, thereby contributing to a better society. The results of a sample of 929 small businesses indicate that the social responsibility policies that most contributed to a short-term increase in labour productivity are those related to internal aspects of the company, in particular its involvement in the quality of processes and products, promotion of innovation and employee care. However, the impact on labour productivity of CSR policies related to external factors, such as relationship with stakeholders and environmental concern, could not be empirically proven in this paper
