    An Analysis of the Ecological Theory of Research Participation Applied to a Sample of Young Adult Males

    Longitudinal research studies are consistently affected by attrition, which can undermine the validity and quality of the study results. Current practice has been to accept and compensate for participants\u27 failure to complete the study, as opposed to making efforts to prevent such drop off prior to the study. The Ecological Theory of Research Participation (ETRP) describes factors within a study that contribute to attrition. Further, the model presents a participant-centered approach, composed of four layers, which provide strategies to incorporate into a study\u27s design as preventative measures against attrition. This model prepares researchers to anticipate the reasons why attrition occurs and to take action to limit it and its effects. In this study the ETRP of previous research conducted by the authors is evaluated in regard to its explanatory efficacy. While promising in its current state, the model can be further developed to produce a more effective method of managing attrition

    Con su concepto de comunidad societal, Parsons predijo las dificultades de establecer unos EEUU en el continente europeo. Las zonas rurales y urbanas de Norteamérica se desarrollaron desde el siglo XVI como territorios compartidos entre personas y grupos de diferentes orígenes. Esa diversidad les obligó a buscar sus normas en un nivel superior de abstracción que uniera sus identidades particulares. El intento de lograr una ciudadanía y constitución europeas que superase las fronteras de los Estados-nación llevó a intensificar ese análisis. Habermas lo intentó, pero no entendió el concepto de comunidad societal y lo acabó sustituyendo por el de patriotismo de la constitución, que finalmente ha abandonado. A la dificultad de consolidar y ampliar la Unión Económica y Monetaria Europea, se suman el crecimiento del nuevo racismo y del voto de extrema derecha, defensor de la ordenación exclusora del territorio y promotor del cierre de fronteras a la migración

    Nowadays the technological revolution is booming, as new ways in which any type of audiovisual material is produced and consumed are often brought to market. These new ways of recording and viewing the image are far from the old television formats, as portable devices are increasingly used with large screens or larger TVs. This different resolution in all types of screens requires for the viewer a better quality in the image. This has caused the appearance of the 4k format, which increases the number of pixels per frame. The aim of this survey is to capture the importance of postproduction, in particular non-linear editing, and the benefits of working in this 4k video format. So it will be done a tutorial of basic notions of video editing in 4k using the editing software Adobe Premiere Pro.Hui dia la revolució tecnològica està en auge, ja que sovint apareixent al mercat noves vies per les quals es produeix i es consumeix tot tipus de material audiovisual. Aquestes noves maneres de gravar i visualitzar la imatge s’allunya dels antics formats de televisió, ja que cada vegada s’usen dispositius portàtils amb pantalles considerables o televisor cada volta més grans. Aquesta diferencia en la resolució requereix una millor qualitat d’imatge per l’espectador. Açò ha provocat l’aparició del format 4k, que augmenta el nombre de píxels per frame. L’objectiu d’aquest estudi es plasmar la importància de la postproducció, concretament l’edició de vídeo, i els beneficis que aporta el treballar amb aquest nou format de vídeo 4k. Per a portar a terme aquesta demostració es realitzarà un tutorial on s’explicarà nocions bàsiques de l’edició de vídeo amb 4k amb l’ús del programari d’edició Adobe Premiere Pro.Hoy en día la revolución tecnológica está en auge, ya que a menudo salen al mercado nuevas vías por las cuales se produce y se consume cualquier tipo de material audiovisual. Estas nuevas formas de grabar y visualiza la imagen, distan mucho de los antiguos formatos de televisión, ya que cada vez se usan dispositivos portátiles con pantallas considerables o televisores más grandes. Esta diferente resolución en todo tipo de pantallas requiere para el espectador una mejor calidad en la imagen. Esto ha provocado la aparición del formato 4k, que aumenta el número de pixeles por frame. El objetivo de este estudio es plasmar la importancia de la postproducción de video, en concreto la edición no lineal, y los beneficios que aporta trabajar en este nuevo formato de vídeo 4k.     Chemistry for Cultural Heritage

    Chemistry finds its applications in a variety of fields, ranging from the pharmaceutical industry to the environmental cause. A chemist is an essential figure in the field of heritage science, due to the need to both understand and preserve our cultural heritage via chemical means. Heritage science, a relatively recent research area, focuses on the analysis and the conservation of historical artefacts, and that relies on interdisciplinary contributions from the humanities as well as the physical sciences. In my project, the discovery and impact of what is considered to be the first synthetic dye, mauveine, by the chemist Sir William H. Perkin in 1856, is used as an example to highlight the importance of conservation chemistry. Perkin’s mauveine became so fashionable during the 19th century, even Queen Victoria wore dresses dyed in the famous purple shade, and several stamps of the same colour were issued. However, the chemical structure of mauveine remained unknown until 1994, when chemists were able to determine its components thanks to modern analytical methods. The research focused on developing an outreach teaching unit for Advanced Higher Chemistry students with a focus on science communication and public engagement. My talk is aimed at highlighting this fascinating area of research that links the arts and the sciences together and the possible careers paths it provides for chemists

    Un programa de Tratamiento de corte Cognitivo-Comportamental basado en las TIC para la prevención y el tratamiento de la depresión: Descripción del programa y datos preliminares

    Introducción: En el año 2020 la depresión alcanzará el segundo lugar del ranking de los DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years), por ello su prevención es un punto central en el Pacto Europeo para la Salud Mental y el Bienestar. Actualmente, menos del 50 % de las personas afectadas recibe el tratamiento correcto. El uso de internet facilita el acceso a los Tratamientos Basados en la Evidencia. Además, es importante desarrollar programas de prevención. Nuestro grupo ha desarrollado un programa preventivo, de corte cognitivo comportamental, auto-aplicado a través de Internet. Sonreír es Divertido combina los procedimientos eficaces para el manejo del estrés, la regulación emocional, la capacidad de afrontamiento y la resiliencia. Metodología: La muestra está compuesta por nueve participantes varones desempleados. La media de edad es de 36-33 (SD = 10–759), con un rango de 22 a 50 años. Se utilizaron: Escala general de Gravedad e Interferencia de la Ansiedad y de la Depresión, Inventario de Depresión de Beck-II y Escala Multidimensional de Estilos de Afrontamiento. Resultados: No hay diferencias estadísticamente significativas del pre al postratamiento, a excepción de la subescala de Aceptación del Brief Cope (z = –2, 27; p < ,05). En el resto de variables, las medias muestran una tendencia a la mejoría. Conclusión: Este programa puede ser útil como estrategia para la prevención, ya que, a pesar de que los participantes estaban pasando por una situación difícil, se observa una tendencia a la mejoría.In 2020, depression will reach the second place in the DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years), ranking, so prevention is a central point for the European Pact for Mental Health and Wellbeing. Currently, less than 50 % of those people affected receive the correct treatment. Using Internet facilitates the access to evidence-based treatments. It is also important to develop prevention programs. Our group has ellaborated a cognitive-behavioural preventive program, self-applied through the Internet. Smiling is Fun combines effective procedures for stress management, emotional regulation, coping ability and resilience. Methodology: The sample consists of nine participants. They are all unemployed men, and their mean age is 36’33 (SD = 10’759), with a range of 22-50 years. We used: Overall Anxiety Severity and Impairment Scale, Overall Depression Severity and Impairment Scale, Beck Depression Inventory II and Brief cope. Results: There aren’t statistically significant differences between pre and post-treatment, except for the Acceptance subscale of the Brief Cope (z = –2, 27, p <.05). For all other variables, means show a tendency to improve. Conclusion: This program can be useful as a prevention strategy considering that even though the participants were going through a difficult situation, there is a trend towards improvement

    Exploring the effects of photon correlations from thermal sources on bacterial photosynthesis

    Thermal light sources can produce photons with strong spatial correlations. We study the role that these correlations might potentially play in bacterial photosynthesis. Our findings show a relationship between the transversal distance between consecutive absorption and the efficiency of the photosynthetic process. Furthermore, membranes where the clustering of core complexes (so-called RC-LH1) is high, display a range where the organism profits maximally from the spatial correlation of the incoming light. By contrast, no maximum is found for membranes with low core-core clustering. We employ a detailed membrane model with state-of-the-art empirical inputs. Our results suggest that the organization of the membrane's antenna complexes may be well-suited to the spatial correlations present in an natural light source. Future experiments will be needed to test this prediction.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    La experiencia se basa en un trabajo práctico orientado por los alumnos del grado décimo a un grupo de preescolar, para introducirlos al mundo de las ciencias experimentales. De este modo, los primeros, por medio de la metacognición, desarrollan competencias cognitivas, procedimentales y actitudinales, diseñando el material didáctico y la metodología apropiada paraimplementar, y los segundos, despiertan su espíritu científico.Se reportan resultados que conducen a concluir que los alumnos de grado décimo, impulsados por una motivación intrínseca, han guiado su aprendizaje bajo un enfoque profundo, que los ha llevado a generar cambios conceptuales en relación a los temas abordados. Por su parte, los alumnos de preescolar, al verse orientados por sus compañeros de décimo, en una practica experimental que les genera tanto interés, han mostrado una actitud hacia la ciencia experimental que es necesario seguir cultivando. AbstractThe experience is based in a practical work oriented by the tenth grade students to a pre-school group in order to introduce them to the world of the experimental sciences. In this way the first trough out metacognition develop cognitive, procedural and attitudinal competences, designing the didactic material and the right methodology for implementing and the second encourage their scientific spirit.The results are reported, and lead to conclude that the students from tenth grade, encouraged by an intrinsically motivation, have guided their learning under a deep approach that lead them to create conceptual changes in relation to the topics the deal with. On the other hand, the pre-school students have so much interest when they are guided by their tenth grades classmates; they also have shown an attitude towards the experimental science that is necessary to cultivate.ResumoA experiência é baseada em práticas de trabalho orientadas a estudantes do ensino fundamental (em idades entre 14 e 16 anos) para um grupo de estudantes de pré-escolar, para introduzi-los ao mundo das ciências experimentais. Assim, os estudantes do ensino fundamental através da metacognição desenvolvem habilidades cognitivas, procedimentais e atitudinais, além disso, com a criação de materiais didáticos e metodologia adequada para implementar, e os segundos despertam seu espírito científico.Os resultados levam à conclusão que os estudante do ensino fundamental impulsionado pela motivação intrínseca, têm orientado a sua aprendizagem em uma abordagem profunda, que os levou a produzir mudanças conceituais em relação aos temas discutidos.
