Alternative financial service providers and the spatial void hypothesis

    Get PDF
This paper examines the use of alternative financial service providers (AFSPs) such as check-cashing outlets and pawnshops in Philadelphia, Montgomery, Delaware, and Allegheny counties. Also explores whether these providers are disproportionately serving minority and low-income areas.

Alternative financial service providers and the spatial void hypothesis: the case of New Jersey and Delaware

    Get PDF
This paper continues the use of the spatial void hypothesis methodology to analyze the location of alternative financial service providers, such as check cashing outlets and pawn shops, in New Castle County, Delaware, and Atlantic, Mercer, Monmouth, and Passaic counties in New Jersey. Also explores whether these providers are disproportionately serving minority and low-income areas.

One year of monitoring the Vela pulsar using a Phased Array Feed

We have observed the Vela pulsar for one year using a Phased Array Feed (PAF) receiver on the 12-metre antenna of the Parkes Test-Bed Facility. These observations have allowed us to investigate the stability of the PAF beam-weights over time, to demonstrate that pulsars can be timed over long periods using PAF technology and to detect and study the most recent glitch event that occurred on 12 December 2016. The beam-weights are shown to be stable to 1% on time scales on the order of three weeks. We discuss the implications of this for monitoring pulsars using PAFs on single dish telescopes.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. Accepted for publication in PAS

Vacuum chamber translation/positioning mechanism and welding power supply controller

    Get PDF
Welding in the vacuum of space represents an important and fundamental problem for space exploration. Repairs or connection of metal components on orbit or during travel to the moon or distant planets may be required. Cracks or holes in spacecraft skin or supporting structures external to the pressurized section will require some type of repair that must be permanently made to the skin or support by welding. The development of a translation/positioning system that will permit research into welding of metal samples in a small vacuum chamber located at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is addressed. The system and associated software was tested to the extent possible without the availability of the welder power supply or control computer that must be supplied by MSFC. Software has been developed for straight line welding. More extensive and varied translations are possible with simple alterations to the operating software to use the full capabilities of this three axes system. The source code 'VW.BAS' has been provided to serve as an example for further development of the vacuum welder translation system

Remote Sensing Information Sciences Research Group: Santa Barbara Information Sciences Research Group, year 4

    Get PDF
Information Sciences Research Group (ISRG) research continues to focus on improving the type, quantity, and quality of information which can be derived from remotely sensed data. Particular focus in on the needs of the remote sensing research and application science community which will be served by the Earth Observing System (EOS) and Space Station, including associated polar and co-orbiting platforms. The areas of georeferenced information systems, machine assisted information extraction from image data, artificial intelligence and both natural and cultural vegetation analysis and modeling research will be expanded

The effect of dust scattering on the timing properties of black holes

    Get PDF
It has been known that sources with high absorption column density also have high dust column density along the line of sight. The differential delays caused by small angle scattering of X rays by dust may have important effects on the power spectra of Galactic black holes at low energies, and impact studies that use the relation between the rms amplitude of variability and energy to determine the origin of QPOs from these sources. We observed the high absorption column density (NH Ëś1023 cm-2 ) GBH 1E1740.7-2942 for 20 ks simultaneously with XMM-Newton and RXTE. By comparing the power spectra from the events in the core of the point spread function (PSF) of XMM-Newton EPIC-PN (using imaging and excluding the scattering halo) and the RXTE data, we quantified the effects of small angle scattering on the timing properties of this source. The rms amplitude of variability in Ëś2-6 keV band obtained from the XMM-Newton data is higher than that of the RXTE as expected from the a scattering halo contribution in the RXTE

Research conducted under this grant was used to extend and expand existing remote sensing activities at the University of California, Santa Barbara in the areas of georeferenced information systems, matching assisted information extraction from image data and large spatial data bases, artificial intelligence, and vegetation analysis and modeling. The research thrusts during the past year are summarized. The projects are discussed in some detail
