Spray coating apparatus having a rotatable workpiece holder
A spray coating apparatus is provided for rotating a workpiece relative to a spray station to obtain a uniform coating of the workpiece. In a typical example, the workpiece comprises a ceramic tile which is to be coated with a ceramic coating and the tile is to be used as a reusable component of the thermal protection system for a space shuttle. The apparatus for rotating the workpiece includes a base support having a first rotatable stage for rotation in the horizontal plane and a second rotatable stage for rotation in a second plane inclined at an angle, such as 45 degrees, to the horizontal plane and the workpiece is supported on this second stage. Thus the workpiece is rotatable in both of two planes of rotation
Effect of oxygen concentration on the structural and magnetic properties of LaRh1/2Mn1/2O3 thin films
Epitaxial LaRh1/2Mn1/2O3 thin films have been grown on (001)-oriented LaAlO3
and SrTiO3 substrates using pulsed laser deposition. The optimized thin film
samples are semiconducting and ferromagnetic with a Curie temperature close to
100 K, a coercive field of 1200 Oe, and a saturation magnetization of 1.7muB
per formula unit. The surface texture, structural, electrical, and magnetic
properties of the LaRh1/2Mn1/2O3 films was examined as a function of the oxygen
concentration during deposition. While an elevated oxygen concentration yields
thin films with optimal magnetic properties, slightly lower oxygen
concentrations result in films with improved texture and crystallinity
Automated weld torch guidance control system
A device for automatically controlling the movement of a welding torch while welding an elongated joint is described. A charge injection television camera is carried on a movable support. The camera includes a matrix of individual light sensing video elements which generate voltages responsive to light reflected off of the joint and surrounding areas of the work piece. The voltages produced by the pixels are converted to digital words which are fed to a microprocessor for generating an error signal. This error signal is fed to a digital motor which is used to drive a movable support upon which the television camera is carried
Analytical and experimental investigation of flow fields of annular jets with and without swirling flow
Analytical and experimental studies were performed to define the flowfield of annular jets, with and, without swirling flow. The analytical model treated configurations with variations of flow angularities, radius ratio, and swirl distributions. Swirl distributions characteristic of stator vanes and rotor blade rows, where the total pressure and swirl distributions are related were incorporated in the mathematical model. The experimental studies included tests of eleven nozzle models, both with and, without swirling exhaust flow. Flowfield surveys were obtained and used for comparison with the analytical model. This comparison of experimental and analytical studies served as the basis for evaluation of several empirical constants as required for application of the analysis to the general flow configuration. The analytical model developed during these studies is applicable to the evaluation of the flowfield and overall performance of the exhaust of statorless lift fan systems that contain various levels of exhaust swirl
Exposure of a tendon extracellular matrix to synovial fluid triggers endogenous and engrafted cell death: A mechanism for failed healing of intrathecal tendon injuries
Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of normal synovial fluid (SF) on exposed endogenous tendon-derived cells (TDC) and engrafted mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) within the tendon extracellular matrix.
Methods: Explants from equine superficial digital flexor (extra-synovial) and deep digital flexor tendons (DDFT) from the compressed, intra-synovial and the tensile, extra-synovial regions were cultured in allogeneic or autologous SF-media. Human hamstring explants were cultured in allogeneic SF. Explant viability was assessed by staining. Proliferation of equine monolayer MSCs and TDCs in SF-media and co-culture with DDFT explants was determined by alamarblue®. Non-viable Native Tendon matrices (NNTs) were re-populated with MSCs or TDCs and cultured in SF-media. Immunohistochemical staining of tendon sections for the apoptotic proteins caspase-3, -8 and -9 was performed.
Results: Contact with autologous or allogeneic SF resulted in rapid death of resident tenocytes in equine and human tendon. SF did not affect the viability of equine epitenon cells, or of MSCs and TDCs in monolayer or indirect explant co-culture. MSCs and TDCs, engrafted into NNTs, died when cultured in SF. Caspase-3, -8 and -9 expression was greatest in SDFT explants exposed to allogeneic SF.
Conclusions: The efficacy of cells administered intra-synovially for tendon lesion repair is likely to be limited, since once incorporated into the matrix, cells become vulnerable to the adverse effects of SF. These observations could account for the poor success rate of intra-synovial tendon healing following damage to the epitenon and contact with SF, common with most soft tissue intra-synovial pathologies

Spectrometric study of condensed phase species of thorium and palladium-based modifiers in a complex matrix for electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry
The chemical and morphological transformations of condensed phase species of a thorium-based modifier were studied over the temperature range 200–2500 °C, without and with the presence of aluminium and silicon as matrix components, and in some instances, arsenic as an analyte element. A similar study was also conducted with palladium as the modifier, for comparison. Results were derived using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive (ED) X-ray spectrometry, Raman microanalysis and attenuated total reflectance (ATR) Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry. Comparable results were found using pyrolytic and non-pyrolytic graphite platforms, with processes occurring at slightly higher temperatures on the pyrolytic graphite platform. With thorium as the modifier, metal oxides were the predominant species on the platform surface at relatively low temperatures (<1500 °C), whereas metal phases became prevalent at high temperatures, when thorium and aluminium tended to behave independently from one other. Some spatial variations in the composition of the salt residues on different regions of the platform were observed (from the region closest to the slot in the tube, to the region furthest from the slot). Nonetheless, thorium metal remained on the graphite platform to higher temperatures than did aluminium metal. In the presence of arsenic, the existence of mixtures of thorium and arsenic oxides, just before the appearance temperature of gas phase arsenic atoms, was confirmed by SEM studies, ED X-ray spectra and Raman microanalysis. This suggests that any modifying effect of thorium on arsenic occurs while the modifier is in the oxide phase rather than in the metal phase. The presence of silicon added as silica, did not influence significantly the thermochemical behaviour of mixtures of thorium and aluminium. However, coexistence of silicon and arsenic oxides at the appearance temperature of the atomic absorption signal of arsenic was obtained, confirming that silicon can act as an internal modifier for arsenic. In the presence of palladium, aluminium exhibited greater interaction with the modifier; consequently, aluminium metal was retained on the platform surface to higher temperatures than thorium, which could explain how interference effects of aluminium on e.g. arsenic are avoided or reduced. Similarly, there was evidence for interaction of palladium and arsenic in the reduced state. However, when aluminium and silicon were present, the transformation of the palladium oxide to the metallic state was affected, which could diminish the modifying benefits of palladium for arsenic in the presence of aluminium
Dependence of Maximum Trappable Field on Superconducting Nb3Sn Cylinder Wall Thickness
Uniform dipole magnetic fields from 1.9 to 22.4 kOe were permanently trapped,
with high fidelity to the original field, transversely to the axes of hollow
Nb3Sn superconducting cylinders. These cylinders were constructed by helically
wrapping multiple layers of superconducting ribbon around a mandrel. This is
the highest field yet trapped, the first time trapping has been reported in
such helically wound taped cylinders, and the first time the maximum trappable
field has been experimentally determined as a function of cylinder wall

Mid-infrared Imaging of a Circumstellar Disk Around HR 4796: Mapping the Debris of Planetary Formation
We report the discovery of a circumstellar disk around the young A0 star, HR
4796, in thermal infrared imaging carried out at the W.M. Keck Observatory. By
fitting a model of the emission from a flat dusty disk to an image at
lambda=20.8 microns, we derive a disk inclination, i = 72 +6/-9 deg from face
on, with the long axis of emission at PA 28 +/-6 deg. The intensity of emission
does not decrease with radius as expected for circumstellar disks but increases
outward from the star, peaking near both ends of the elongated structure. We
simulate this appearance by varying the inner radius in our model and find an
inner hole in the disk with radius R_in = 55+/-15 AU. This value corresponds to
the radial distance of our own Kuiper belt and may suggest a source of dust in
the collision of cometesimals. By contrast with the appearance at 20.8 microns,
excess emission at lambda = 12.5 microns is faint and concentrated at the
stellar position. Similar emission is also detected at 20.8 microns in residual
subtraction of the best-fit model from the image. The intensity and ratio of
flux densities at the two wavelengths could be accounted for by a tenuous dust
component that is confined within a few AU of the star with mean temperature of
a few hundred degrees K, similar to that of zodiacal dust in our own solar
system. The morphology of dust emission from HR 4796 (age 10 Myr) suggests that
its disk is in a transitional planet-forming stage, between that of massive
gaseous proto-stellar disks and more tenuous debris disks such as the one
