    Importance of Play: Play-Based Instruction Within a Preschool Learning Environment

    This action research study investigated and compared the attitudes and beliefs of play-based instruction among several early childhood professionals. A researcher-designed survey was sent to participants in several small Midwestern schools. The participants included preschool, transitional kindergarten (TK) and kindergarten teachers as well as preschool and elementary administrators. The statements on the survey were based on three different early childhood teaching approaches: teacher-directed instruction, student-centered instruction, and play-based instruction. The responses were analyzed and compared and the results showed mixed beliefs about play-based instruction in the preschool classroom. Preschool teachers and administrators strongly agreed on the play-based statements while TK teachers, kindergarten teachers and elementary administrators had mixed or neutral beliefs on specific play-based statements

    Managing supplier relationships in a new product development context

    Organizations can no longer rely solely on their own resources to innovate and look for strategic interactions beyond their organizational boundaries, allowing them to improve the quality of their own internal resources by investing in core competencies while contracting out other knowledge domains. From a theoretical perspective the focus of research has shifted towards supplier relationship management (SRM) and early supplier involvement in new product development (NPD). Even though much research has been done in these areas, a more comprehensive study investigating the constructs that determine the quality of a relationship still has to be done. Furthermore, the existing research has largely focused either on the role of SRM with regard to NPD performance or on knowledge transfer and its impact on NPD performance. Research encompassing these two important aspects of the NPD process is still lacking. Thirdly, our study expands the field of research beyond the automotive industry, by focusing on consumer product industry. Lastly, how SRM affects knowledge transfer and in turn NPD performance has yet not been researched. Our findings confirm the positive relationship between relationship quality, knowledge transfer and NPD performance. Managing supplier relationships leads to a higher quality relationship which contributes to the performance of NPD projects. Secondly, a total of thirteen constructs have been identified to be decisive for the quality of a relationship. These constructs act on either an individual or organizational level. Our study underlines the importance of supplier relationship management in a NPD context and the developed research model can be used to predict the performance of a NPD project by measuring the quality of the relationship between buyer and supplier on these thirteen constructs

    Dilatometric investigation of deformation mechanisms in polystyrene-polyethylene block copolymer blends. Correlation between Poisson ratio and adhesion

    The deformation behavior of blends contg. polystyrene (I) [9003-53-6], low-d. polyethylene (II) [9002-88-4], and a hydrogenated butadiene-styrene diblock copolymer (III) was examd. by tensile testing with simultaneous vol. measurements. Assuming that shearing causes no vol. changes, crazing, after yielding, was the only deformation mechanism in blends with low I and III contents. Shearing became important in blends with high I concns. due to formation of a semicontinuous low modulus phase. The decrease in the Poisson ratio with increasing II content in I-II blends, as opposed to an increase in the presence of III, shows the Poisson ratio to be very sensitive to adhesion between the components. The toughness of I-II blends is discussed in terms of concns. of craze nuclei. Too few craze nuclei give rise to brittle failure because the resulting low no. of crazes cannot accommodate much deformation of the matrix whereas too many craze nuclei also cause brittle failure because of the high probability of combination of the crazes to form a crack.     Nurse-driven clinical pathway based on an innovative asthma score reduces admission time for children

    Objective: We recently demonstrated that an innovative asthma score independent of auscultation could accurately predict the requirement for bronchodilator nebulization compared to the physician's routine clinical judgment to administer bronchodilators. We aimed to standardize inpatient care for children with acute asthma by implementing a clinical pathway based on this innovative asthma score. Methods: We designed a nurse-driven clinical pathway. This pathway included standardized respiratory assessments and a protocol for the nursing staff to administer bronchodilators without a specific order from the physician. We compared the length of stay and the number of readmissions to a historical cohort. Results: Seventy-nine patients with moderate acute asthma completed the pathway. We obtained a total of 858 Childhood asthma scores in these patients, with a median of 11 scores per patient (interquartile range 8-17). Patients treated according to the nurse-driven protocol were 3.3 times more likely to be discharged earlier (hazard ratio, 3.29; 95% confidence interval, 2.33-4.66; P < 0.05), and length of stay was significantly reduced (median 28 versus 53 h) compared to the historical standard practice. On request, the attending physician assessed the patient's respiratory status 42 times (4.9% of all childhood asthma score assessments). Patient safety was not compromised, and none of the patients were removed from the pathway. In each group, we readmitted two (2.5%) patients within 1 week after discharge. Conclusion: This nurse-driven clinical pathway for children with acute asthma based on an asthma score independent of auscultation findings significantly decreased length of stay without compromising patient safety

    Hemichannel-mediated and pH-based feedback from horizontal cells to cones in the vertebrate retina

    Background: Recent studies designed to identify the mechanism by which retinal horizontal cells communicate with cones have implicated two processes. According to one account, horizontal cell hyperpolarization induces an increase in pH withinthe synaptic cleft that activates the calcium current (Ca2+-current) in cones, enhancing transmitter release. An alternative account suggests that horizontal cell hyperpolarization increases the Ca2+-current to promote transmitter release through ahemichannel-mediated ephaptic mechanism.Methodology/Principal Findings: To distinguish between these mechanisms, we interfered with the pH regulating systems in the retina and studied the effects on the feedback responses of cones and horizontal cells. We found that the pH buffers HEPES and Tris partially inhibit feedback responses in cones and horizontal cells and lead to intracellular acidification ofneurons. Application of 25 mM acetate, which does not change the extracellular pH buffer capacity, does lead to both intracellular acidification and inhibition of feedback. Because intracellular acidification is known to inhibit hemichannels, the key experiment used to test the pH hypothesis, i.e. increasing the extracellular pH buffer capacity, does not discriminatebetween a pH-based feedback system and a hemichannel-mediated feedback system. To test the pH hypothesis in a manner independent of artificial pH-buffer systems, we studied the effect of interfering with the endogenous pH buffer, the bicarbonate/carbonic anhydrase system. Inhibition of carbonic anhydrase allowed for large changes in pH in the synapticcleft of bipolar cell terminals and cone terminals, but the predicted enhancement of the cone feedback responses, according to the pH-hypothesis, was not observed. These experiments thus failed to support a proton mediated feedback mechanism. The alternative hypothesis, the hemichannel-mediated ephaptic feedback mechanism, was therefore studied experimentally, and its feasibility was buttressed by means of a quantitative computer model of the cone/horizontal cellsynapse.Conclusion: We conclude that the data presented in this paper offers further support for physiologically relevant ephaptic interactions in the retina
