    The effect of internationalisation on the beef and maize sub-sectors: The relevance of revealed comparative advantage measures

    According to the RCA and RCA# the beef sub-sector in South Africa has shown a revealed comparative disadvantage for 17 out of the 22 years to 2002, while the maize sub-sector showed a revealed comparative advantage for 18 out of the same 22 years. However, this article argues that these results do not show the real state of competitiveness that exists in these sub-sectors, mainly because RCA measures should not be used to make definitive conclusions whether an industry, sector or sub-sector is competitive, nor whether it uses scare resources efficiently. RCA measures explain in more accurate ways, relative to a simple analysis of export trends, how a country features in the context of world trade. Hence, one possible application of RCA measures is to deduce the impact of changes in trade policies on an industry, sector or sub-sector. Cognisance should also be taken that the RCA measures fail to distinguish between a region's factor endowments. Finally, it appears as if both the beef and maize sub-sectors have adjusted favourably since the implementation of the Marrakech agreement and subsequent deregulation of the domestic market. Favourably in this context means that both sub-sectors appear to have discounted the changing trade and regulatory environments into their respective supply chains. The question of how competitive these sub-sectors are relative to their international counterparts however remains unanswered, and will require a more in-depth analysis of the complete chains for these sub-sectors.International Relations/Trade,

    Isolation of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis from apparently Healthy Sheep and Goats

    A total of 260 tissue specimens (from the last portion of the small intestine, ileo-cecal valve and corresponding lymph nodes) were collected from apparently healthy sheep and goats in the slaughter houses. The specimens were prepared and inoculated on Middle Brook 7H10 agar base M199 media with and without mycobactin J. All the specimens were pre-treated with 5% oxalic acid. Direct smears were also prepared from intestinal scrapings and lymph nodes parenchyma and stained with Zeihl Neelsen (acid-fast stain). The cultures were monitored carefully and results were recorded throughout the incubation period, among which 23 (9%) of them showed growth after the 16th week. The culture Results were recorded considering the long incubation period, colony appearance and acid fastness of the bacteria. The direct smear result revealed 55 (21%) positivity. Sensitivity and specificity of the culture method was determined taking histopathological examination as a reference. It is concluded that the conventional culture method is laborious and time consuming for sub clinical paratuberculosis in small ruminants.     Lepirudin in the management of patients with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia

    Lepirudin, a recombinant hirudin, is a direct irreversible thrombin inhibitor by binding to both free and clot-bound thrombin. It is approved for treatment of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), which is a serious antibody-mediated drug reaction mostly associated with the use of unfractionated heparin. Clinical experience during the last 10 years has proved the efficacy of lepirudin in the management of HIT. The major route of elimination of lepirudin is the kidney, accounting for approximately 90% of its systemic clearance. The most important adverse reactions are bleeding and the induction of immunologic reactions. The risk of bleeding can be reduced by implementing an optimal monitoring and dose adjustment strategy, particularly in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery and in those with impaired renal function. Development of antihirudin antibodies may enhance the anticoagulant effect of lepirudin. Anaphylactic reactions associated with lepirudin therapy are rare. The lack of an antidote against lepirudin is still a concern, particularly during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery with a heart-lung machine and during artificial renal support. Currently, hemofiltration using high-flux filter systems is the only available and valid means to manage hirudin overdose. Nevertheless, the drug can be safely used if meticulous monitoring strategy is installed

    Estimation of Commodity Specific Production Costs Using German Farm Accountancy Data

    A central problem in estimating per unit costs of production originates from the fact that most farms produce multiple outputs and standard farm-accounting data are only available at the whole-farm level. The seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) approach is used to estimate per unit production costs based on German farm accountancy data. Special emphasis is put on outlier detection prior to the estimation of production costs to increase the robustness of the results. Outlier observations are identified based on the Mahalanobis distance for each observation on the data set. It was observed that less negative cost coefficients are estimated after the exclusion of the outliers. The time series analysis of cost estimation based on SUR regression shows the costs of arable crops after 2004, affected by rising prices of fertilizer, seeds and energy, while the increase of livestock production costs after 2006 is attributed to feed costs.Multi-output, outlier detection, production costs, Seemingly Unrelated Regression, Agricultural Finance,

    Jigsaw co-operative learning strategy integrated with Geogebra : a tool for content knowledge development of intermediate Calculus for first year undergraduate learners of two public universities in Ethiopia

    Intermediate calculus bridges secondary school and advanced university mathematics courses. Most mathematics education research literatures indicated that the conceptual knowledge in intermediate calculus has challenged first year undergraduate mathematics and science learners to a great extent through the lecture method. The content knowledge attained by them has been tremendously decreasing. Negative attitude exhibited by students toward calculus was highly influenced by the lecture method used. Generally, students have not looked at the learning of all mathematics courses offered in universities as normal as other courses. Due to this lack of background conceptual knowledge in learners, they have been highly frustrated by the learning of advanced mathematics courses. Taking the understanding of teaching and learning challenge of conceptual knowledge of calculus into consideration, Ethiopian public universities have been encouraging instructors to devise and implement active learning methods through any professional development training opportunity. The training was aimed to enhance learners’ content knowledge and attitude towards calculus. This is one of the main reasons for the motivation of this study that experimental group learners were allowed to be nurtured by the lecture method in their mainstream class, and then also the active learning intervention method integrated with GeoGebra in the mathematics laboratory class. Only conventional lecture method was used to teach the comparison group in both the mainstream and mathematics laboratory class. The purpose of the study was to explore the Gambari and Yusuf (2016) stimulus of the jigsaw co-operative learning method combined with GeoGebra (JCLGS) on statistics and chemistry learners’ content knowledge improvement and change of their attitude towards calculus. The post-positivism mixed methods tactic was used in a non-equivalent pre- and post-test comparison group quasi-experimental design. The population of the study was the whole freshman mathematics and science degree program learners of two public universities in Ethiopia in 2017. Samples of the size 150 in both the experimental and comparison groups were drawn utilizing two-stage random sampling technique. A questionnaire using a Likert-scale on attitudes and an achievement test were sources used for data collection. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics conducting an independent samples t-test and a Two Way ANOVA for repeated measures using SPSS23. Each of the findings on content knowledge, conceptual knowledge, and procedural knowledge development produced through the TWO-Way ANOVA, respectively as F(1,148)=80.917; 2=.353; p<.01, F(1,148)=106.913; 2=.419; p<.01, and F(1,148)=7.328; 2=.047; p<.01, revealed a statistically significant difference between the treatment and comparison groups from pre-test to post-test. These findings show that the experimental group participants were highly beneficial in developing their content knowledge and conceptual knowledge through the active learning approach and technology-based learning strategy using Vygotsky’s socio-cultural learning theory. The JCLGS learning environment representing Vygotsky’s socio-cultural learning theory modestly influenced the procedural knowledge learning of the experimental group learners’. Although the lecture method affected the comparison group students’ knowledge development in calculus during the academic semester, the impact was not comparable to that of the active learning approach and technology-based learning strategy. The major reason for this was the attention and care given to the active learning intervention integrated with GeoGebra by the researcher, data collectors, and research participants. Overall findings showed that the active learning intervention allowed the experimental group students to considerably enhance their conceptual knowledge and content knowledge in calculus. Learners also positively changed their opinion towards calculus and GeoGebra. The intervention was a group interactive environment that allowed students’ to be reflective, share prior experience and knowledge, and independent learners. As a matter of fact, educators are advised to model such a combination of active learning approach and technology-based learning strategy in their classroom instructional setting and practices.     Grey (Halichoerus Grypus) And Harbor Seal (Phoca Vitulina) Bycatch And Depredation In New England Sink-Gillnet Fisheries

    Marine mammals interact with commercial fisheries via competition for resources, depredation (feeding on fish caught in gear), entanglement, and bycatch in fishing gear. In New England, gray seals (Halichoerus grypus) and harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) are often taken as bycatch in sink-gillnet fisheries and are believed to depredate fish in gillnets. As seal populations increase, interactions with fisheries are also likely to increase, affecting both seal stocks and the New England fishing industry. This study aims to understand seal bycatch in the New England sink-gillnet fisheries by identifying the spatial and temporal trends in bycatch as well as the characteristics of seals that are taken most frequently as bycatch. Depredation is also a concern in the commercial fishing industry, however, there is some controversy among fishermen and scientists concerning the identification of the species responsible for depredation (e.g. seal vs. spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias)). Therefore, a protocol for identifying seal and spiny dogfish depredation was developed and used to identify depredation in a small-scale study of the sink-gillnet fishery targeting skate. Data from the Northeast Fisheries Observer Program (NEFOP) from 2005 – 2013 were analyzed to assess seal bycatch in the Northeast sink-gillnet fishery. Male seals were taken significantly more frequently than females, with young of the year most commonly occurring as bycatch. Areas where seals were taken in New England shifted seasonally, generally following the annual life history of each seal species. Gray seal bycatch showed an increasing trend over the years of study, with highest bycatch occurring in the spring in areas closest to haul out sites: Muskeget and Monomoy Island, MA, USA. Harbor seal bycatch was much more variable between years, with highest bycatch occurring in the winter near major harbor seals haul out sites along the southern Maine coast and southeastern Massachusetts. This study was a crucial step to understanding the complexities of seal-fishery interactions in New England. In order to mitigate damage from depredation, it is important to know the source of the damage. Characteristics of seal and spiny dogfish bites were identified using foam imprints from jaws and bites by captive animals in the soft tissue of fish. Measurements from bite imprints and damaged fish were used to develop a protocol for identifying damage in the field. In general, dogfish bites were clean (flesh completely removed), circular in shape, and wider than long (bite ratio (bite length/bite width) \u3c 0.6), whereas seal bites were ragged (flesh not completely removed, but partially torn from the bite), rectangular or trapezoidal in shape, and usually longer than wide or equal in length and width (bite ratio \u3e 0.7). This protocol was used to identify damaged catch observed on a commercial gill-net fishing vessel targeting skate in New England waters June – August 2014. In this small-scale study, dogfish bites were identified as the damage source significantly more frequently than seal bites (Multifactor ANOVA: F df=2,66 = 9.306, p = 0.0003; Tukey HSD: p \u3c 0.0001). This inexpensive, quick, and practical protocol can be used on a larger scale to further understand depredation by seals and dogfish throughout New England

    THE EFFECT OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN TRADE POLICY REGIME ON THE BEEF AND MAIZE SUB-SECTORS

    Trade policies form the main economic 'buffer' between one national economy and another, i.e. the general and specific elements of each nation's trade policy interact directly or indirectly with those of other nations in all economic transactions across international borders. A nation's trade policy involves specific actions to encourage and promote or discourage foreign trade through the legal, financial and institutional environment within which foreign transactions occur. This study evaluates the trade policy applicable to the beef and maize sub-sectors in South Africa. Issues that are investigated include whether trade policy provides more or less protection than needed, whether it creates more openness for trade and the revealed comparative advantage of beef and maize. The RCA measures explain in more accurate ways, relative to a simple analysis of export trends, how a country features in the context of word trade. Hence, one possible application of RCA measures is to deduct the impact of changes in trade policies on an industry, sector or sub-sector. Cognisance should also be taken that the RCA measures fail to distinguish between a region's factor endowments. The study also shows that the ERP calculation is lower than the NRP for beef and higher for maize. This means that the protection for inputs is higher than that of the output in the case of the beef sub-sector and vice versa in case of the maize sub-sector. The results from the ERP calculations show that the beef sub-sector is taxed, whilst the maize sub-sector are subsidized. Furthermore, this study recommends the market niche should be exploited more.     Measuring technical efficiency and technological gaps of beef farmers in three regions of Botswana: An application of meta-frontier approach

    Differences in resource endowment between regions influence the technologies used in livestock production and cause location-specific effects on production and technical change. Access to technologies may differ within regions due to different farm characteristics. Against this background, the study applied a stochastic meta- frontier model followed by a Tobit regression to estimate technical efficiency and meta-technology ratios and assess factors influencing efficiency of beef farms across three regions in Botswana. Results show that the average technical efficiency level is 0.496 for the whole sample and 0.194, 0.331 and 0.318 for beef farms in South East, Central and Chobe regions, respectively. Considerable scope is identified for improving beef production in Botswana, and targeting is enabled by the differential results across the farm types. Policy analysis using models that assume different beef farm types operate under similar technology present a misleading picture. Considering the importance of livestock sector in poverty reduction, there is a need for appropriate and targeted policies directed towards enhancing efficiency. Especially, such policies should be targeted on provision of technology related services such as controlled breeding methods
