Ask the audience! Using a Personal Response System to enhance information literacy and induction sessions at Kingston University
The paper focuses on the use of a Personal Response System (PRS) as a tool for engaging students during initial library induction sessions. The Personal Response system is an interactive tool that is appropriate for a wide range of learning and teaching activities. The PRS works by each student (or group of students) responding to questions or statements using a handset. A virtual library tour created by Kingston University library staff was developed interspersed with the use of the PRS. The paper explores the background to the development of this virtual tour and the use of the PRS in information literacy sessions prior to the introduction in the library induction sessions. It reflects on the advantages of using this technology and the benefits for both staff and students
Attitudes towards science: a review of the literature and its implications
This article offers a review of the major literature about attitudes to science and its implications over the past 20 years. It argues that the continuing decline in numbers choosing to study science at the point of choice requires a research focus on students? attitudes to science if the nature of the problem is to be understood and remediated. Starting from a consideration of what is meant by attitudes to science, it considers the problems inherent to their measurement and what is known about students' attitudes towards science and the many factors of influence such as gender, teachers, curricula, cultural and other variables. The literature itself points to the crucial importance of gender and the quality of teaching. Given the importance of the latter we argue that there is a greater need for research to identify those aspects of science teaching that make school science engaging for pupils. In particular, a growing body of research on motivation offers important pointers to the kind of classroom environment and activities that might raise pupils' interest in studying school science and a focus for future research

Loading fluorescent Ca<sup>2+</sup> indicators into living cells
Small-molecule fluorescent Ca2+ reporters are the most widely used tools in the field of Ca2+ signaling. The excellent spatial and temporal resolution afforded by fluorescent reporters has driven the understanding of Ca2+ as a messenger in many different cell types. In many situations, the cellular loading and monitoring of fluorescent Ca2+ indicators is quite trivial. However, there are numerous pitfalls that require consideration to ensure that optimal data are recorded. Fluorescent Ca2+ indicators have carboxylic acid groups for binding of Ca2+. Because these “free-acid” forms of the indicators are hydrophilic they cannot readily cross cell membranes and need to be introduced into cells using techniques such as microinjection, pinocytosis, or diffusion from a patch pipette. However, the most convenient and widely used method for loading indicators into cells is as hydrophobic compounds in which the carboxylic acid groups are esterified (commonly as acetoxymethyl [AM] or acetate esters). The ester versions of the indicators permeate the plasma membrane. The Ca2+-sensitive, free-acid form of the indicator is liberated following hydrolysis of the ester groups by intracellular esterases
Mean eigenvalues for simple, simply connected, compact Lie groups
We determine for each of the simple, simply connected, compact and complex
Lie groups SU(n), Spin and that particular region inside the unit
disk in the complex plane which is filled by their mean eigenvalues. We give
analytical parameterizations for the boundary curves of these so-called trace
figures. The area enclosed by a trace figure turns out to be a rational
multiple of in each case. We calculate also the length of the boundary
curve and determine the radius of the largest circle that is contained in a
trace figure. The discrete center of the corresponding compact complex Lie
group shows up prominently in the form of cusp points of the trace figure
placed symmetrically on the unit circle. For the exceptional Lie groups ,
and with trivial center we determine the (negative) lower bound on
their mean eigenvalues lying within the real interval . We find the
rational boundary values -2/7, -3/13 and -1/31 for , and ,

A weak instability in an expanding universe?
We use higher derivative classical gravity to study the nonlinear coupling
between the cosmological expansion of the universe and metric oscillations of
Planck frequency and very small amplitude. We derive field equations at high
orders in the derivative expansion and find that the nature of the new dynamics
is extremely restricted. For the equation of state parameter the relative
importance of the oscillations grows logarithmically. Their effect on the

An economic evaluation of salt reduction policies to reduce coronary heart disease in England: a policy modeling study
AbstractObjectivesDietary salt intake has been causally linked to high blood pressure and increased risk of cardiovascular events. Cardiovascular disease causes approximately 35% of total UK deaths, at an estimated annual cost of £30 billion. The World Health Organization and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence have recommended a reduction in the intake of salt in people's diets. This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of four population health policies to reduce dietary salt intake on an English population to prevent coronary heart disease (CHD).MethodsThe validated IMPACT CHD model was used to quantify and compare four policies: 1) Change4Life health promotion campaign, 2) front-of-pack traffic light labeling to display salt content, 3) Food Standards Agency working with the food industry to reduce salt (voluntary), and 4) mandatory reformulation to reduce salt in processed foods. The effectiveness of these policies in reducing salt intake, and hence blood pressure, was determined by systematic literature review. The model calculated the reduction in mortality associated with each policy, quantified as life-years gained over 10 years. Policy costs were calculated using evidence from published sources. Health care costs for specific CHD patient groups were estimated. Costs were compared against a “do nothing” baseline.ResultsAll policies resulted in a life-year gain over the baseline. Change4life and labeling each gained approximately 1960 life-years, voluntary reformulation 14,560 life-years, and mandatory reformulation 19,320 life-years. Each policy appeared cost saving, with mandatory reformulation offering the largest cost saving, more than £660 million.ConclusionsAll policies to reduce dietary salt intake could gain life-years and reduce health care expenditure on coronary heart disease
