    Magnetic Field Induced Charged Exciton Studies in a GaAs/Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As Single Heterojunction

    The magnetophotoluminescence (MPL) behavior of a GaAs/Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As single heterojunction has been investigated to 60T. We observed negatively charged singlet and triplet exciton states that are formed at high magnetic fields beyond the nu=1 quantum Hall state. The variation of the charged exciton binding energies are in good agreement with theoretical predictions. The MPL transition intensities for these states showed intensity variations (maxima and minima) at the nu=1/3 and 1/5 fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state as a consequence of a large reduction of electron-hole screening at these filling factors.Comment: submitted to Phys.     Proinflammatory cytokines inhibit osteogenic differentiation from stem cells: implications for bone repair during inflammation

    SummaryObjectiveThe effects of inflammation on bone development from mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are unclear due to the difficulty in isolating MSC. The aim of this study was to develop a MSC isolation method and to determine the in vitro effects of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) on their osteogenic differentiation.MethodsMurine MSC were isolated from the limbs of C57/Bl6 mice through collagenase digestion of bone and enriched as the Stem cell antigen (Sca-1)+ CD31− CD45− population, using lineage immunodepletion, followed by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS). They were differentiated along the osteoblast linage in the presence or absence of IL-1β and TNFα. Mineralization was measured as was the expression of a number of osteogenic genes by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR).ResultsWe show that osteogenic differentiation from the MSC population is suppressed by IL-1β and TNFα. In addition to suppression of bone mineralization, both cytokines inhibited the differentiation-associated increases in alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and the gene expression for ALP, α1(I) procollagen, runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) and osterix. However, only TNFα inhibited osteonectin and osteopontin mRNA expression and only IL-1β reduced cell proliferation.ConclusionsThe convenient isolation technique enables the easy generation of sufficient MSC to permit the molecular analysis of their differentiation. We were thus able to show that the proinflammatory cytokines, IL-1β and TNFα, can compromise bone development from this primary MSC population, although with some significant differences. The potential involvement of specific inflammatory mediators needs to be taken into account if optimal bone repair and presumably that of other tissues are to be achieved with MSC

    Galactic conformity in both star formation and morphological properties

    We investigate one-halo galactic conformity (the tendency for satellite galaxies to mirror the properties of their central) in both star formation and morphology using a sample of 8230 galaxies in 1266 groups with photometry and spectroscopy from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, morphologies from Galaxy Zoo and group memberships as determined by Yang et al. This is the first paper to investigate galactic conformity in both star formation and visual morphology properties separately. We find that the signal of galactic conformity is present at low significance in both star formation and visual morphological properties, however it is stronger in star formation properties. Over the entire halo mass range we find that groups with star-forming (spiral) centrals have, on average, a fraction 0.18 +/- 0.08 (0.08 +/- 0.06) more star-forming (spiral) satellites than groups with passive (early-type) centrals at a similar halo mass. We also consider conformity in groups with four types of central: passive early-types, star-forming spirals, passive spirals, and star-forming early-types (which are very rarely centrals), finding that the signal of morphological conformity is strongest around passive centrals regardless of morphology; although blue spiral centrals are also more likely than average to have blue spiral satellites. We interpret these observations of the relative size of the conformity signal as supporting a scenario where star formation properties are relatively easily changed, while morphology changes less often/more slowly for galaxies in the group environment

    Magnetoresistance and electronic structure of asymmetric GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum wells in the in-plane/tilted magnetic field

    Bilayer two-dimensional electron systems formed by a thin barrier in the GaAs buffer of a standard heterostructure were investigated by magnetotransport measurements. In magnetic fields oriented parallel to the electron layers, the magnetoresistance exhibits an oscillation associated with the depopulation of the higher occupied subband and the field-induced transition into a decoupled bilayer. Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in slightly tilted magnetic fields allow to reconstruct the evolution of the electron concentration in the individual subbands as a function of the in-plane magnetic field. The characteristics of the system derived experimentally are in quantitative agreement with numerical self-consistent-field calculations of the electronic structure.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Quasi-Fermi Distribution and Resonant Tunneling of Quasiparticles with Fractional Charges

    We study the resonant tunneling of quasiparticles through an impurity between the edges of a Fractional Quantum Hall sample. We show that the one-particle momentum distribution of fractionally charged edge quasiparticles has a quasi-Fermi character. The density of states near the quasi-Fermi energy at zero temperature is singular due to the statistical interaction of quasiparticles. Another effect of this interaction is a new selection rule for the resonant tunneling of fractionally charged quasiparticles: the resonance is suppressed unless an integer number of {\em electrons} occupies the impurity. It allows a new explanation of the scaling behavior observed in the mesoscopic fluctuations of the conductivity in the FQHE.Comment: 7 pages, REVTeX 3.0, Preprint SU-ITP-93-1

    Inter-layer Hall effect in double quantum wells subject to in-plane magnetic fields

    We report on a theoretical study of the transport properties of two coupled two-dimensional electron systems subject to in-plane magnetic fields. The charge redistribution in double wells induced by the Lorenz force in crossed electric and magnetic fields has been studied. We have found that the redistribution of the charge and the related inter-layer Hall effect originate in the chirality of diamagnetic currents and give a substantial contribution to the conductivity.Comment: 7 RevTex pages, 4 figures, appendix added and misprint in Eq.     Hearing Characteristics and Doppler Shift Compensation in South Indian CF-FM Bats

Echolocation pulses, Doppler shift compensation behaviour under laboratory conditions and frequency response characteristics of hearing were recorded inRhinolophus rouxi, Hipposideros speoris andHipposideros bicolor. 2. The frequencies of the constant frequency portions of the CF-FM pulses lie at about 82.8 kHz forR. rouxi from Mahabaleshwar, at 85.2 kHz forR. rouxi from Mysore. Hipposiderid bats have considerably higher frequencies at 135 kHz inH. speoris and 154.5 kHz inH. bicolor. The mean sound durations were 50 ms, 6.4 ms and 4.7 ms, respectively. 3. R. rouxi compensates for Doppler shifts in a range up to typically 4 kHz of positive Doppler shifts (Fig. 2). The Doppler shift compensation behaviour is almost identical to that ofR. ferrumequinum. 4. H. speoris andH. bicolor do not compensate for Doppler shifts under laboratory conditions. Doppler shifts in the echoes induce emission frequency changes which are not correlated to the presented Doppler shifts (Fig. 3). 5. The frequency response characteristics of hearing ofR. rouxi show characteristic sensitivity changes near the bat's reference frequency as also found inR. ferrumequinum. The threshold differences between the low threshold at the reference frequency and a few hundred Hz below are 40 to 50 dB in awake bats (Fig. 5). 6. Frequency sensitivity changes near the emitted CF-frequency of the bats are less pronounced inH. speoris or almost absent inH. bicolor

    Sticky stuff : redefining bedform prediction in modern and ancient environments

Paterson was funded by the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS).The dimensions and dynamics of subaqueous bedforms are well known for cohesionless sediments. However, the effect of physical cohesion imparted by cohesive clay within mixed sand-mud substrates has not been examined, despite its recognized influence on sediment stability. Here we present a series of controlled laboratory experiments to establish the influence of substrate clay content on subaqueous bedform dynamics within mixtures of sand and clay exposed to unidirectional flow. The results show that bedform dimensions and steepness decrease linearly with clay content, and comparison with existing predictors of bedform dimensions, established within cohesionless sediments, reveals significant over-prediction of bedform size for all but the lowermost clay contents examined. The profound effect substrate clay content has on bedform dimensions has a number of important implications for interpretation in a range of modern and ancient environments, including reduced roughness and bedform heights in estuarine systems and the often cited lack of large dune cross-sets in turbidites. The results therefore offer a step change in our understanding of bedform formation and dynamics in these, and many other, sedimentary environments.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
