LHC Limits on the Top-Higgs in Models with Strong Top-Quark Dynamics
LHC searches for the standard model Higgs Boson in WW or ZZ decay modes place
strong constraints on the top-Higgs state predicted in many models with new
dynamics preferentially affecting top quarks. Such a state couples strongly to
top-quarks, and is therefore produced through gluon fusion at a rate enhanced
relative to the rate for the standard model Higgs boson. A top-Higgs state with
mass less than 300 GeV is excluded at 95% CL if the associated top-pion has a
mass of 150 GeV, and the constraint is even stronger if the mass of the
top-pion state exceeds the top-quark mass or if the top-pion decay constant is
a substantial fraction of the weak scale. These results have significant
implications for theories with strong top dynamics, such as topcolor-assisted

Texture-Modified Diet for Improving the Management of Oropharyngeal Dysphagia in Nursing Home Residents: An Expert Review.
Abstract
Objectives
This paper provides evidence-based and, when appropriate, expert reviewed recommendations for long-stay residents who are prescribed texture-modified diets (TMDs), with the consideration that these residents are at high risk of worsening oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD), malnutrition, dehydration, aspiration pneumonia, and OD-associated mortality, poorer quality of life and high costs.
Design
Nestlé Health Science funded an initial virtual meeting attended by all authors, in which the unmet needs and subsequent recommendations for OD management were discussed. The opinions, results, and recommendations detailed in this paper are those of the authors, and are independent of funding sources.
Setting
OD is common in nursing home (NH) residents, and is defined as the inability to initiate and perform safe swallowing. The long-stay NH resident population has specific characteristics marked by a shorter life expectancy relative to community-dwelling older adults, high prevalence of multimorbidity with a high rate of complications, dementia, frailty, disability, and often polypharmacy. As a result, OD is associated with malnutrition, dehydration, aspiration pneumonia, functional decline, and death. Complications of OD can potentially be prevented with the use of TMDs.
Results
This report presents expert opinion and evidence-informed recommendations for best practice on the nutritional management of OD. It aims to highlight the practice gaps between the evidence-based management of OD and real-world patterns, including inadequate dietary provision and insufficient staff training. In addition, the unmet need for OD screening and improvements in therapeutic diets are explored and discussed.
Conclusion
There is currently limited empirical evidence to guide practice in OD management. Given the complex and heterogeneous population of long-stay NH residents, some 'best practice' approaches and interventions require extensive efficacy testing before further changes in policy can be implemented
The PPAR-γ agonist pioglitazone modulates inflammation and induces neuroprotection in parkinsonian monkeys
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Activation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) has been proposed as a possible neuroprotective strategy to slow down the progression of early Parkinson's disease (PD). Here we report preclinical data on the use of the PPAR-γ agonist pioglitazone (Actos<sup>®</sup>; Takeda Pharmaceuticals Ltd.) in a paradigm resembling early PD in nonhuman primates.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Rhesus monkeys that were trained to perform a battery of behavioral tests received a single intracarotid arterial injection of 20 ml of saline containing 3 mg of the dopaminergic neurotoxin 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). Twenty-four hours later the monkeys were assessed using a clinical rating scale, matched accordingly to disability, randomly assigned to one of three groups [placebo (n = 5), 2.5 (n = 6) or 5 (n = 5) mg/kg of pioglitazone] and their treatments started. Three months after daily oral dosing, the animals were necropsied.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We observed significant improvements in clinical rating score (<it>P </it>= 0.02) in the animals treated with 5 mg/kg compared to placebo. Behavioral recovery was associated with preservation of nigrostriatal dopaminergic markers, observed as higher tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) putaminal optical density (<it>P </it>= 0.011), higher stereological cell counts of TH-ir (<it>P </it>= 0.02) and vesicular monoamine transporter-2 (VMAT-2)-ir nigral neurons (<it>P </it>= 0.006). Stereological cell counts of Nissl stained nigral neurons confirmed neuroprotection (<it>P </it>= 0.017). Pioglitazone-treated monkeys also showed a dose-dependent modulation of CD68-ir inflammatory cells, that was significantly decreased for 5 mg/kg treated animals compared to placebo (<it>P </it>= 0.018). A separate experiment to assess CSF penetration of pioglitazone revealed that 5 mg/kg p.o. induced consistently higher levels than 2.5 mg/kg and 7.5 mg/kg. p.o.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results indicate that oral administration of pioglitazone is neuroprotective when administered early after inducing a parkinsonian syndrome in rhesus monkeys and supports the concept that PPAR-γ is a viable target against neurodegeneration.</p
Galactic Globular and Open Clusters in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. I. Crowded Field Photometry and Cluster Fiducial Sequences in ugriz
We present photometry for globular and open cluster stars observed with the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). In order to exploit over 100 million stellar
objects with r < 22.5 mag observed by SDSS, we need to understand the
characteristics of stars in the SDSS ugriz filters. While star clusters provide
important calibration samples for stellar colors, the regions close to globular
clusters, where the fraction of field stars is smallest, are too crowded for
the standard SDSS photometric pipeline to process. To complement the SDSS
imaging survey, we reduce the SDSS imaging data for crowded cluster fields
using the DAOPHOT/ALLFRAME suite of programs and present photometry for 17
globular clusters and 3 open clusters in a SDSS value-added catalog. Our
photometry and cluster fiducial sequences are on the native SDSS 2.5-meter
ugriz photometric system, and the fiducial sequences can be directly applied to
the SDSS photometry without relying upon any transformations. Model photometry
for red giant branch and main-sequence stars obtained by Girardi et al. cannot
be matched simultaneously to fiducial sequences; their colors differ by
~0.02-0.05 mag. Good agreement (< ~0.02 mag in colors) is found with Clem et
al. empirical fiducial sequences in u'g'r'i'z' when using the transformation

A Short Scale Length for the \alpha-Enhanced Thick Disk of the Milky Way: Evidence from Low-Latitude SEGUE Data
We examine the \alpha-element abundance ratio, [\alpha/Fe], of 5620 stars,
observed by the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration
survey in the region 6 kpc < R < 16 kpc, 0.15 kpc < |Z| < 1.5 kpc, as a
function of Galactocentric radius R and distance from the Galactic plane |Z|.
Our results show that the high-\alpha\ thick disk population has a short scale
length (L_thick ~ 1.8 kpc) compared to the low-\alpha population, which is
typically associated with the thin disk. We find that the fraction of
high-\alpha\ stars in the inner disk increases at large |Z|, and that
high-\alpha\ stars lag in rotation compared to low-\alpha\ stars. In contrast,
the fraction of high-\alpha\ stars in the outer disk is low at all |Z|, and
high- and low-\alpha\ stars have similar rotational velocities up to 1.5 kpc
from the plane. We interpret these results to indicate that different processes
were responsible for the high-\alpha\ populations in the inner and outer disk.
The high-\alpha\ population in the inner disk has a short scale length and
large scale height, consistent with a scenario in which the thick disk forms
during an early gas-rich accretion phase. Stars far from the plane in the outer
disk may have reached their current locations through heating by minor mergers.
The lack of high-\alpha\ stars at large R and |Z| also places strict

Miscarriage and stillbirth following maternal Zika virus infection in nonhuman primates.
Zika virus (ZIKV) infection is associated with congenital defects and pregnancy loss. Here, we found that 26% of nonhuman primates infected with Asian/American ZIKV in early gestation experienced fetal demise later in pregnancy despite showing few clinical signs of infection. Pregnancy loss due to asymptomatic ZIKV infection may therefore be a common but under-recognized adverse outcome related to maternal ZIKV infection
The Ninth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Spectroscopic Data from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III) presents the first spectroscopic
data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). This ninth data
release (DR9) of the SDSS project includes 535,995 new galaxy spectra (median
z=0.52), 102,100 new quasar spectra (median z=2.32), and 90,897 new stellar
spectra, along with the data presented in previous data releases. These spectra
were obtained with the new BOSS spectrograph and were taken between 2009
December and 2011 July. In addition, the stellar parameters pipeline, which
determines radial velocities, surface temperatures, surface gravities, and
metallicities of stars, has been updated and refined with improvements in
temperature estimates for stars with T_eff<5000 K and in metallicity estimates
for stars with [Fe/H]>-0.5. DR9 includes new stellar parameters for all stars
presented in DR8, including stars from SDSS-I and II, as well as those observed
as part of the SDSS-III Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and
Exploration-2 (SEGUE-2).
The astrometry error introduced in the DR8 imaging catalogs has been
corrected in the DR9 data products. The next data release for SDSS-III will be
in Summer 2013, which will present the first data from the Apache Point
Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) along with another year of

The Eighth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Data from SDSS-III
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) started a new phase in August 2008, with
new instrumentation and new surveys focused on Galactic structure and chemical
evolution, measurements of the baryon oscillation feature in the clustering of
galaxies and the quasar Ly alpha forest, and a radial velocity search for
planets around ~8000 stars. This paper describes the first data release of
SDSS-III (and the eighth counting from the beginning of the SDSS). The release
includes five-band imaging of roughly 5200 deg^2 in the Southern Galactic Cap,
bringing the total footprint of the SDSS imaging to 14,555 deg^2, or over a
third of the Celestial Sphere. All the imaging data have been reprocessed with
an improved sky-subtraction algorithm and a final, self-consistent photometric
recalibration and flat-field determination. This release also includes all data
from the second phase of the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and
Evolution (SEGUE-2), consisting of spectroscopy of approximately 118,000 stars
at both high and low Galactic latitudes. All the more than half a million
stellar spectra obtained with the SDSS spectrograph have been reprocessed
through an improved stellar parameters pipeline, which has better determination

The Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
This paper describes the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
(SDSS), marking the completion of the original goals of the SDSS and the end of
the phase known as SDSS-II. It includes 11663 deg^2 of imaging data, with most
of the roughly 2000 deg^2 increment over the previous data release lying in
regions of low Galactic latitude. The catalog contains five-band photometry for
357 million distinct objects. The survey also includes repeat photometry over
250 deg^2 along the Celestial Equator in the Southern Galactic Cap. A
coaddition of these data goes roughly two magnitudes fainter than the main
survey. The spectroscopy is now complete over a contiguous area of 7500 deg^2
in the Northern Galactic Cap, closing the gap that was present in previous data
releases. There are over 1.6 million spectra in total, including 930,000
galaxies, 120,000 quasars, and 460,000 stars. The data release includes
improved stellar photometry at low Galactic latitude. The astrometry has all
been recalibrated with the second version of the USNO CCD Astrograph Catalog
(UCAC-2), reducing the rms statistical errors at the bright end to 45
milli-arcseconds per coordinate. A systematic error in bright galaxy photometr
is less severe than previously reported for the majority of galaxies. Finally,
we describe a series of improvements to the spectroscopic reductions, including
better flat-fielding and improved wavelength calibration at the blue end,
better processing of objects with extremely strong narrow emission lines, and
