The FMOS-COSMOS Survey of Star-forming Galaxies at z ~ 1.6. III. Survey Design, Performance, and Sample Characteristics
We present a spectroscopic survey of galaxies in the COSMOS field using the Fiber Multi-object Spectrograph (FMOS), a near-infrared instrument on the Subaru Telescope. Our survey is specifically designed to detect the Hα emission line that falls within the H-band (1.6–1.8 μm) spectroscopic window from star-forming galaxies with 1.4 < z < 1.7 and M_(stellar) ≳ 10^(10) M⊙. With the high multiplex capability of FMOS, it is now feasible to construct samples of over 1000 galaxies having spectroscopic redshifts at epochs that were previously challenging. The high-resolution mode (R ~ 2600) effectively separates Hα and [N ii]λ6585, thus enabling studies of the gas-phase metallicity and photoionization state of the interstellar medium. The primary aim of our program is to establish how star formation depends on stellar mass and environment, both recognized as drivers of galaxy evolution at lower redshifts. In addition to the main galaxy sample, our target selection places priority on those detected in the far-infrared by Herschel/PACS to assess the level of obscured star formation and investigate, in detail, outliers from the star formation rate (SFR)—stellar mass relation. Galaxies with Hα detections are followed up with FMOS observations at shorter wavelengths using the J-long (1.11–1.35 μm) grating to detect Hβ and [O iii]λ5008 which provides an assessment of the extinction required to measure SFRs not hampered by dust, and an indication of embedded active galactic nuclei. With 460 redshifts measured from 1153 spectra, we assess the performance of the instrument with respect to achieving our goals, discuss inherent biases in the sample, and detail the emission-line properties. Hyperfine Level Splitting for Hydrogen-Like Ions due to Rotation-Spin Coupling
The theoretical aspects of spin-rotation coupling are presented. The approach
is based on the general covariance principle. It is shown that the
gyrogravitational ratio of the bare spin-1/2 and the spin-1 particles is equal
unity. That is why spin couples with rotation as an ordinary angular momentum.
This result is the rigorous substantiation of the cranking model. To observe
the phenomenon, the experiment with hydrogen-like ions in a storage ring is
suggested. It is found that the splitting of the
hyperfine state of the and ions
circulating in the storage ring ESR in Darmstadt along a helical trajectory is
about 4.5 MHz. We argue that such splitting can be experimentally determined by

Irreversible growth of binary mixtures on small-world networks
Binary mixtures growing on small-world networks under far-from-equilibrium
conditions are studied by means of extensive Monte Carlo simulations. For any
positive value of the shortcut fraction of the network (), the system
undergoes a continuous order-disorder phase transition, while it is noncritical
in the regular lattice limit (). Using finite-size scaling relations, the
phase diagram is obtained in the thermodynamic limit and the critical exponents
are evaluated. The small-world networks are thus shown to trigger criticality,
a remarkable phenomenon which is analogous to similar observations reported

Managed moves: schools collaborating for collective gain
Government guidance in the United Kingdom encourages groups of schools to take collective responsibility for supporting and making provision for excluded pupils and those at risk of exclusion. Managed-moves are one way that some schools and authorities are enacting such guidance. This paper presents the results of an evaluation of one such scheme. The scheme, involving seven neighbouring secondary schools, was nearing its first year of completion. The paper draws primarily on interview data with pupils, parents and school staff to describe a number of positive outcomes associated with the scheme and to explore how these were achieved. We found that while some of these could be attributed directly to the managed-move, others arose from the more inclusive ethos and practices of particular schools. The concepts of tailored support, care and commitment emerged as strong themes that underpinned the various practical ways in which some schools in the cluster were able to re-engage 'at-risk' pupils. As managed moves become more widely practiced it will be important to remember that it is how the move proceeds and develops rather than the move itself that will ultimately make the difference for troubled and troublesome pupils

Image Coaddition with Temporally Varying Kernels
Large, multi-frequency imaging surveys, such as the Large Synaptic Survey
Telescope (LSST), need to do near-real time analysis of very large datasets.
This raises a host of statistical and computational problems where standard
methods do not work. In this paper, we study a proposed method for combining
stacks of images into a single summary image, sometimes referred to as a
template. This task is commonly referred to as image coaddition. In part, we
focus on a method proposed in previous work, which outlines a procedure for
combining stacks of images in an online fashion in the Fourier domain. We
evaluate this method by comparing it to two straightforward methods through the
use of various criteria and simulations. Note that the goal is not to propose
these comparison methods for use in their own right, but to ensure that
additional complexity also provides substantially improved performance
Sports review: A content analysis of the International Review for the Sociology of Sport, the Journal of Sport and Social Issues and the Sociology of Sport Journal across 25 years
The International Review for the Sociology of Sport, the Journal of Sport and Social Issues and Sociology of Sport Journal have individually and collectively been subject to a systematic content analysis. By focusing on substantive research papers published in these three journals over a 25-year time period it is possible to identify the topics that have featured within the sociology of sport. The purpose of the study was to identify the dominant themes, sports, countries, methodological frameworks and theoretical perspectives that have appeared in the research papers published in these three journals. Using the terms, identified by the author(s), that appear in the paper’s title, abstract and/or listed as a key word, subject term or geographical term, a baseline is established to reflect on the development of the sub-discipline as represented by the content of these three journals. It is suggested that the findings illustrate what many of the more experienced practitioners in the field may have felt subjectively. On the basis of this systematic, empirical study it is now possible to identify those areas have received extensive coverage and those which are under-researched within the sociology of sport. The findings are used to inform a discussion of the role of academic journals and the recent contributions made by Michael Silk, David Andrews, Michael Atkinson and Dominic Malcolm on the past, present and future of the ‘sociology of sport’
