A monopole solution from noncommutative multi-instantons
We extend the relation between instanton and monopole solutions of the
selfduality equations in SU(2) gauge theory to noncommutative space-times.
Using this approach and starting from a noncommutative multi-instanton solution
we construct a U(2) monopole configuration which lives in 3 dimensional
ordinary space. This configuration resembles the Wu-Yang monopole and satisfies
the selfduality (Bogomol'nyi) equations for a U(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs system.Comment: 19 pages; title and abstract changed, brane interpretation corrected.

Probing ferroelectricity in highly conducting materials through their elastic response: persistence of ferroelectricity in metallic BaTiO3-d
The question whether ferroelectricity (FE) may coexist with a metallic or
highly conducting state, or rather it must be suppressed by the screening from
the free charges, is the focus of a rapidly increasing number of theoretical
studies and is finally receiving positive experimental responses. The issue is
closely related to the thermoelectric and multiferroic (also magnetic)
applications of FE materials, where the electrical conductivity is required or
spurious. In these circumstances, the traditional methods for probing
ferroelectricity are hampered or made totally ineffective by the free charges,
which screen the polar response to an external electric field. This fact may
explain why more than 40 years passed between the first proposals of FE metals
and the present experimental and theoretical activity. The measurement of the
elastic moduli, Young's modulus in the present case, versus temperature is an
effective method for studying the influence of doping on a FE transition
because the elastic properties are unaffected by electrical conductivity. In
this manner, it is shown that the FE transitions of BaTiO3-d are not suppressed
by electron doping through O vacancies; only the onset temperatures are
depressed, but the magnitudes of the softenings, and hence of the piezoelectric
activity, are initially even increased

Strong evidences for a nonextensive behavior of the rotation period in Open Clusters
Time-dependent nonextensivity in a stellar astrophysical scenario combines
nonextensive entropic indices derived from the modified Kawaler's
parametrization, and , obtained from rotational velocity distribution. These
's are related through a heuristic single relation given by , where is the cluster age. In a nonextensive
scenario, these indices are quantities that measure the degree of
nonextensivity present in the system. Recent studies reveal that the index
is correlated to the formation rate of high-energy tails present in the
distribution of rotation velocity. On the other hand, the index is
determined by the stellar rotation-age relationship. This depends on the
magnetic field configuration through the expression , where
and denote the saturation level of the star magnetic field and its
topology, respectively. In the present study, we show that the connection
is also consistent with 548 rotation period data for single
main-sequence stars in 11 Open Clusters aged less than 1 Gyr. The value of
2.5 from our unsaturated model shows that the mean magnetic field
topology of these stars is slightly more complex than a purely radial field.
Our results also suggest that stellar rotational braking behavior affects the
degree of anti-correlation between and cluster age . Finally, we suggest
that stellar magnetic braking can be scaled by the entropic index .Comment: 6 pages and 2 figures, accepted to EPL on October 17, 201
A multiband radiometer and data acquisition system for remote sensing field research
Specifications are described for a recently developed prototype multispectral data acquisition system which consists of multiband radiometer with 8 bands between 0.4 and 12.5 micrometers and a data recording module to record data from the radometer and ancillary sources. The systems is adaptable to helicopter, truck, or tripod platforms, as well as hand-held operation. The general characteristics are: (1) comparatively inexpensive to acquire, maintain and operate; (2) simple to operate and calibrate; (3) complete with data hardware and software; and (4) well documented for use by researchers. The instrument system is to be commercially available and can be utilized by many researchers to obtain large numbers of accurate, calibrated spectral measurements. It can be a key element in improving and advancing the capability for field research in remote sensing
Stabilizer Quantum Error Correction with Qubus Computation
In this paper we investigate stabilizer quantum error correction codes using
controlled phase rotations of strong coherent probe states. We explicitly
describe two methods to measure the Pauli operators which generate the
stabilizer group of a quantum code. First, we show how to measure a Pauli
operator acting on physical qubits using a single coherent state with large
average photon number, displacement operations, and photon detection. Second,
we show how to measure the stabilizer operators fault-tolerantly by the
deterministic preparation of coherent cat states along with one-bit
teleportations between a qubit-like encoding of coherent states and physical
qubits.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
High-precision abundances of elements in Kepler LEGACY stars. Verification of trends with stellar age
HARPS-N spectra with S/N > 250 and MARCS model atmospheres were used to
derive abundances of C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Zn, and Y in ten
stars from the Kepler LEGACY sample (including the binary pair 16 Cyg A and B)
selected to have metallicities in the range -0.15 < [Fe/H] < +0.15 and ages
between 1 and 7 Gyr. Stellar gravities were obtained from seismic data and
effective temperatures were determined by comparing non-LTE iron abundances
derived from FeI and FeII lines. Available non-LTE corrections were also
applied when deriving abundances of the other elements. The results support the
[X/Fe]-age relations previously found for solar twins. [Mg/Fe], [Al/Fe], and
[Zn/Fe] decrease by ~0.1 dex over the lifetime of the Galactic thin disk due to
delayed contribution of iron from Type Ia supernovae relative to prompt
production of Mg, Al, and Zn in Type II supernovae. [Y/Mg] and [Y/Al], on the
other hand, increase by ~0.3 dex, which can be explained by an increasing
contribution of s-process elements from low-mass AGB stars as time goes on. The
trends of [C/Fe] and [O/Fe] are more complicated due to variations of the ratio
between refractory and volatile elements among stars of similar age. Two stars
with about the same age as the Sun show very different trends of [X/H] as a
function of elemental condensation temperature Tc and for 16 Cyg, the two
components have an abundance difference, which increases with Tc. These
anomalies may be connected to planet-star interactions.Comment: 13 pages with 7 figures. Accepted for publication in A&
Pressure effect in the X-ray intrinsic position resolution in noble gases and mixtures
A study of the gas pressure effect in the position resolution of an
interacting X- or gamma-ray photon in a gas medium is performed. The intrinsic
position resolution for pure noble gases (Argon and Xenon) and their mixtures
with CO2 and CH4 were calculated for several gas pressures (1-10bar) and for
photon energies between 5.4 and 60.0 keV, being possible to establish a linear
match between the intrinsic position resolution and the inverse of the gas
pressure in that energy range. In order to evaluate the quality of the method
here described, a comparison between the available experimental data and the
calculated one in this work, is done and discussed. In the majority of the
cases, a strong agreement is observed
