The Corpus of Leo’s novels. Some suggestions concerning their date and promulgation

Producción CientíficaThe new edition of the Novels of Leo VI the Wise by Spyros Troianos is perhaps a good occasion to review several arguments concerning the dating and constitution of this collection of 113 Novels which has long attracted the interest of scholars but of which no systematic study has been undertaken since those of Monnier and Spulber at the beginning of the 20th century. It is the purpose of this article to encourage such a study by proposing new arguments. In particular, we shall question the prevailing communis opinio, according to which Novels were published in 888, simultaneously with the Basilica. This dating of the Novels was first proposed by Andreas Schminck and supported by the analysis by the late Marie Theres Fögen of its connection with the Basilica. Both articles were published in the same number of Subseciva Groningana some twenty years ago. Euboeans and vikings: pirates or traders?

Producción CientíficaLa naturaleza de la expansión eubea por el Mediterráneo durante el siglo VIII aC ha sido objeto de una intensa discusión desde las excavaciones realizadas en Lefkandi, Pitecusa y Al Mina (Siria). De acuerdo con la opinión mayoritaria, el comercio fue el motor principal de este proceso, aunque el autor defiende la tesis de que fue la piratería la que empujó a los eubeos fuera de sus fronteras. Se buscan pruebas de ello, tanto en fuentes griegas y asirias como en una comparación tipológica con la expansión de los vikingos, especialmente en Rusia.The nature of the Euboean expansion in the Mediterranean during the 8th century BC has been subject to a lively discussion since the findings in Lefkandi, Ischia and Al Mina (Syria). According to the communis opinio, trading was the main reason for Euboean colonisation. However, the author considers that piracy offers a more plausible explanation for it, finding some arguments for his thesis in Greek and Assyrian sources, as well as in a typological comparison with the Viking trade warriors (mainly in Russia)

El Panatenaico de Isócrates: 3- Las cartas a los Macedonios

Producción CientíficaEl corpus epistolar que bajo el nombre de Isócrates ha llegado hasta nosotros contiene un total de nueve cartas de las que cuatro (cartas II, III, IV y V) están dirigidas a gobernantes macedonios, todas ellas escritas con posterioridad a la redacción del A Filipo en el año 346. Considerando que después de esta fecha el único discurso que se nos conserva de Isócrates es el Panatenaico, estas cuatro cartas nos ofrecen por lo tanto un testimonio crucial para verificar la validez de la interpretación que hice de este discurso en las dos entregas anteriores de este estudio1. Por ello es preciso dedicar a estas cartas un estudio detallado e individualizado que tenga en cuenta sus problemas de autenticidad y datación, en torno a los cuales hubo un intenso debate a fines del XIX y principios del XX que no ha tenido apenas continuidad en épocas más recientes. El Panatenaico de lsócrates: 1. El Excursus de Agamenón

This article examines the excursus that Isocrates dedicates to the figure of Agamemnon in the Panathenaicus. Previous opinions based on that of P. Wendland, which saw in the figure of Agamemnon a replica of King Philip, are disqualified by a detailed study of the assertions contained both in the excursus and in the rest of the discourse. It is no only that no indications can be fond that refer us to the figure of King Philip, but also it is very unlikely that Isocrates risked his prestige supporting Philip in the middle of the war Athens sustained against him. Isocrates' explicit indications, as well as the c1car parallels drawn between the indications of the excursus and those of the poem to the Panathenaicus indicate that the figure of Agamemnon is used by Isocrates as a vehicle to defend his work as a propagandist of the panhellenic ideal. Considering the importance of the excursus inside the discourse, this new reinterpretation affects the global understanding of the Panathenaicus to which the author of this article will dedicate a subsequent paper.No disponible
