Flavonoids as modulators of memory and learning: molecular interactions resulting in behavioural effects
There is considerable interest in the potential of a group of dietary-derived phytochemicals known as flavonoids in modulating neuronal function and thereby influencing memory, learning and cognitive function. The present review begins by detailing the molecular events that underlie the acquisition and consolidation of new memories in the brain in order to provide a critical background to understanding the impact of flavonoid-rich diets or pure flavonoids on
memory. Data suggests that despite limited brain bioavailability, dietary supplementation with
flavonoid-rich foods, such as blueberry, green tea and Ginkgo biloba lead to significant reversals of age-related deficits on spatial memory and learning. Furthermore, animal and cellular studies suggest that the mechanisms underpinning their ability to induce improvements in
memory are linked to the potential of absorbed flavonoids and their metabolites to interact with and modulate critical signalling pathways, transcription factors and gene and/or protein expression which control memory and learning processes in the hippocampus; the brain structure where spatial learning occurs. Overall, current evidence suggests that human translation of these animal investigations are warranted, as are further studies, to better understand the precise cause-and-effect relationship between flavonoid intake and cognitive outputs
What do clinicians want? Interest in integrative health services at a North Carolina academic medical center
BACKGROUND: Use of complementary medicine is common, consumer driven and usually outpatient focused. We wished to determine interest among the medical staff at a North Carolina academic medical center in integrating diverse therapies and services into comprehensive care. METHODS: We conducted a cross sectional on-line survey of physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants at a tertiary care medical center in 2006. The survey contained questions on referrals and recommendations in the past year and interest in therapies or services if they were to be provided at the medical center in the future. RESULTS: Responses were received from 173 clinicians in 26 different departments, programs and centers. There was strong interest in offering several specific therapies: therapeutic exercise (77%), expert consultation about herbs and dietary supplements (69%), and massage (66%); there was even stronger interest in offering comprehensive treatment programs such as multidisciplinary pain management (84%), comprehensive nutritional assessment and advice (84%), obesity/healthy lifestyle promotion (80%), fit for life (exercise and lifestyle program, 76%), diabetes healthy lifestyle promotion (73%); and comprehensive psychological services for stress management, including hypnosis and biofeedback (73%). CONCLUSION: There is strong interest among medical staff at an academic health center in comprehensive, integrated services for pain, obesity, and diabetes and in specific services in fitness, nutrition and stress management. Future studies will need to assess the cost-effectiveness of such services, as well as their financial sustainability and impact on patient satisfaction, health and quality of life

Rapid neuroadaptation to surgically-induced aniseikonia in a 17-year-old patient with high preoperative anisometropia: A case report
Purpose: To report a case of rapid neuroadaptation to surgically-induced aniseikonia in a 17-year-old with preoperative anisometropia of 9.5 D.
Observations: A 17-year-old female with a history of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and progressive high myopia with resulting anisometropia secondary to conventional laser photocoagulation in her right eye was found to have diplopia after undergoing cataract surgery in that eye. Other etiologies of diplopia were ruled out and reversal of anisometropia remained the only viable diagnosis. Her diplopia fully resolved without intervention within one month of the surgery.
Conclusion and Importance: In cases of neuroadaptation to long standing anisometropia, even if that anisometropia develops in infancy, abrupt reversal following surgery can be surprisingly well tolerated
Family politics to families with disabled children in Poland
Opisano rozwiązania prawne i świadczenia przysługujące rodzinom. Porównano te zapomogi z udogodnieniami istniejącymi w krajach rozwiniętych: Norwegii i Niemczech. The subject of the study is to analyze the system of support for families with disabled children in Poland. It presents the history of social politics, including changing legal solutions for people with disabilities. It discusses the basic services to minors disabled: education, health care and rehabilitation. It describes the legal solutions and benefits granted to families. These grants are compared with existing facilities in developed countries: Norway and Germany. In order to analyze the situation of families with disabled children individual in-depth interviews with mothers of sick children were conducted. This made it possible to note that it is necessary to introduce a comprehensive system of assistance so that parents receiving the information about the child's illness would not feel left themselves. There is also needed coordination of benefits, control of subsidizing rehabilitation equipment and other items
