The capability of capacitive sensors in the monitoring relative humidity in hypogeum environments
Hypogeum environments are characterized by high levels of relative humidity (RH).
Most humidity sensors currently in use are based on the capacitive effect of the dielectric material
to change according to water vapour uptake. In hypogeum environments the dielectric material
can be saturated by water vapor, implying a significant error in the RH measurement. To improve
the capacity of this type of humidity sensors, a modified hygrometer capacitive sensor, which
uses a heating cycle to avoid the condensation, has been recently developed by Rotronic®.
During four field campaigns in two different hypogea environments (the Monkey Tomb in Siena
and the Mithreum of Caracalla Baths in Rome), RH was measured using the conventional
capacitive sensor (CCS) and the heated capacitive sensor (HCS). The purpose of this study was
to investigate the capability of HCS to detect RH variations when the environmental conditions
were close to vapor saturation. Significant differences were found between the measurements of
the two sensors: when RH was close to 100%, the CCS was not able to detect the RH decrease,
giving only a measure of RH=100%, while HCS detected such a RH decrease. Therefore, these
results encourage the use of HCS in the monitoring of RH levels in extreme humidity sites such
as hypogea sites
Multi-year total ozone column variability at three Norwegian sites and the influence of Northern Hemisphere Climatic indices
Total ozone column (TOC) measurements are retrieved from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) onboard the NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) Aura satellite at the three Norwegian sites: Oslo (59.9 degrees N 10.7 degrees E, 1 m a.s. l.), Trondheim (63.4 degrees N 10.4 degrees E, 3 m a.s.l.) and Andoya (69.1 degrees N 15.7 degrees E, 32 m a.s.l.). TOC data have been analysed from 2005 to 2021, in order to detect annual and multi-years total ozone variability. The relationship between geopotential height (GPH) at 250 hPa and total ozone column has been evaluated after showing that monthly anomalies in GPH and TOC are correlated amongst the three sites. The influence of the three Northern Hemisphere Tele Connection (TC) indices (North Atlantic Oscillation, Arctic Oscillation and Scandinavia) on TOC variability has been investigated. It is found that Scandinavia index plays a prominent role for the northernmost latitudes of Andoya and Trondheim while North Atlantic Oscillation and Arctic Oscillation indices are weakly correlated (negatively) to TOC and (positively) to GPH at Oslo. The response of TOC variability to the solar activity at the three sites is also explored and it is noticed that in the period of increasing variation of solar activity, significant TOC anomaly events are only observed in Andoya and Trondheim
From 3-Port to New Laparoendoscopic Single-Site (LESS) Cholecystectomy : A Critical Analysis of Available Evidence.
In recent years, laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) has gained greater interest and diffusion for the treatment of gallstones. This critical review aims to evaluate the feasibility and safety of LESS cholecystectomy versus the 3-port technique (TPT) through a comparative analysis of 5 parameters: mean operative time, intraoperative and postoperative complications, conversion to open, conversion to the 4-trocar technique and postoperative hospital stay. The authors performed a systematic search of the medical literature through a search of PubMed and Ovid EMBASE. Inclusion criteria were as follows: publication date between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2010; English or Italian language; human participants and series of 20 operations or more. There were 5 manuscripts meeting the inclusion criteria for TPT and 23 for LESS. Only one prospective randomized controlled trial comparing TPT and LESS was identified. Operative time is significantly longer in the single-incision group. Complications and conversion rates to the 4-port technique are higher in LESS. Postoperative hospital stay is similar in the 2 groups. Rate of conversion to open is higher in TPT. Despite the number of publications on LESS cholecystectomy, the vast majority of data available in the literature are from small case series without any comparative data. Although LESS cholecystectomy is a fashionable technique there are few data available for an evidence-based determination as to the real benefits of this technique. Well-designed comparative studies are suggested to validate the clinical benefits and ensure that there are no new complications or added costs associated with the new technique
Indications to total thyroidectomy for multinodular goiter in old patients
Background: In Western society, the percentage of elderly people is
continually growing. The prevalence of goiter increases with the age and it
is estimated that 90% of women over 60 years old and 60% of men over
80 years old have a relief of thyroid nodules. This has great importance for
these patients, because the incidence of malignant transformation is higher
than younger ones and these are often tumor very aggressive patterns. If
thyroidectomy is indicated for patients with suspected neoplasm and severe
obstructive symptoms, their surgery should not be delayed since a late
urgent operation could raise morbidity and mortality risk. The main
indications for young patients are due to obstructive and metabolic causes
over and above suspected cancer.
Total thyroidectomy is considered by many authors as the treatment of
choice.
Materials and methods: 75 elderly patients were submitted to
thyroidectomy. The indications were metabolic (42.6%), obstructive (32%)
and for suspected cancer (25.4%).
Results: The most frequent complications observed with respect to young
patients in different series have been cardiovascular, pulmonary or
urological. Regarding the complications directly related to thyroidectomy,
there were no differences compared to younger groups, except transient
complications (hypoparathyroidism, seroma). In our experience, the main
complication was represented by hypocalcemia (30.6%), permanent in 8% of
cases. Cancer was relieved in 21.3% of cases.
Prognosis has been excellent in most cases, with immediate remission of
symptoms related to thyrotoxicosis and to tracheal and esophageal
compression in almost all symptomatic patients.
Conclusions: Age is an independent prognostic factor for cancers. It has
been demonstrated that elderly patients with PTC that are operated have
better prognosis and quality of life due to the resolution of dyspnea and
dysphagia. In our experience, we think that age is not a contraindication to
thyroid surgery

Entanglement Entropy and Wilson Loop in St\"{u}ckelberg Holographic Insulator/Superconductor Model
We study the behaviors of entanglement entropy and vacuum expectation value
of Wilson loop in the St\"{u}ckelberg holographic insulator/superconductor
model. This model has rich phase structures depending on model parameters. Both
the entanglement entropy for a strip geometry and the heavy quark potential
from the Wilson loop show that there exists a "confinement/deconfinement" phase
transition. In addition, we find that the non-monotonic behavior of the
entanglement entropy with respect to chemical potential is universal in this
model. The pseudo potential from the spatial Wilson loop also has a similar
non-monotonic behavior. It turns out that the entanglement entropy and Wilson
loop are good probes to study the properties of the holographic superconductor

Percentile reference values for anthropometric body composition indices in European children from the IDEFICS study
INTRODUCTION: To characterise the nutritional status in children with obesity or wasting conditions, European anthropometric reference values for body composition measures beyond the body mass index (BMI) are needed. Differentiated assessment of body composition in children has long been hampered by the lack of appropriate references.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study is to provide percentiles for body composition indices in normal weight European children, based on the IDEFICS cohort (Identification and prevention of Dietary-and lifestyle-induced health Effects in Children and infantS).
METHODS: Overall 18 745 2.0-10.9-year-old children from eight countries participated in the study. Children classified as overweight/obese or underweight according to IOTF (N = 5915) were excluded from the analysis. Anthropometric measurements (BMI (N = 12 830); triceps, subscapular, fat mass and fat mass index (N = 11 845-11 901); biceps, suprailiac skinfolds, sum of skinfolds calculated from skinfold thicknesses (N = 8129-8205), neck circumference (N = 12 241); waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio (N = 12 381)) were analysed stratified by sex and smoothed 1st, 3rd, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, 97th and 99th percentile curves were calculated using GAMLSS.
RESULTS: Percentile values of the most important anthropometric measures related to the degree of adiposity are depicted for European girls and boys. Age-and sex-specific differences were investigated for all measures. As an example, the 50th and 99th percentile values of waist circumference ranged from 50.7-59.2 cm and from 51.3-58.7 cm in 4.5-to < 5.0-year-old girls and boys, respectively, to 60.6-74.5 cm in girls and to 59.9-76.7 cm in boys at the age of 10.5-10.9 years.
CONCLUSION: The presented percentile curves may aid a differentiated assessment of total and abdominal adiposity in European children
A third generation vaccine for human visceral leishmaniasis and post kala azar dermal leishmaniasis : First-in-human trial of ChAd63-KH
BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL or kala azar) is the most serious form of human leishmaniasis, responsible for over 20,000 deaths annually, and post kala azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is a stigmatizing skin condition that often occurs in patients after successful treatment for VL. Lack of effective or appropriately targeted cell mediated immunity, including CD8+ T cell responses, underlies the progression of VL and progression to PKDL, and can limit the therapeutic efficacy of anti-leishmanial drugs. Hence, in addition to the need for prophylactic vaccines against leishmaniasis, the development of therapeutic vaccines for use alone or in combined immuno-chemotherapy has been identified as an unmet clinical need. Here, we report the first clinical trial of a third-generation leishmaniasis vaccine, developed intentionally to induce Leishmania-specific CD8+ T cells. METHODS: We conducted a first-in-human dose escalation Phase I trial in 20 healthy volunteers to assess the safety, tolerability and immunogenicity of a prime-only adenoviral vaccine for human VL and PKDL. ChAd63-KH is a replication defective simian adenovirus expressing a novel synthetic gene (KH) encoding two Leishmania proteins KMP-11 and HASPB. Uniquely, the latter was engineered to reflect repeat domain polymorphisms and arrangements identified from clinical isolates. We monitored innate immune responses by whole blood RNA-Seq and antigen specific CD8+ T cell responses by IFNγ ELISPOT and intracellular flow cytometry. FINDINGS: ChAd63-KH was safe at intramuscular doses of 1x1010 and 7.5x1010 vp. Whole blood transcriptomic profiling indicated that ChAd63-KH induced innate immune responses characterized by an interferon signature and the presence of activated dendritic cells. Broad and quantitatively robust CD8+ T cell responses were induced by vaccination in 100% (20/20) of vaccinated subjects. CONCLUSION: The results of this study support the further development of ChAd63-KH as a novel third generation vaccine for VL and PKDL. Adherence to a Mediterranean-like dietary pattern in children from eight European countries : the IDEFICS study
BACKGROUND: Despite documented benefits of a Mediterranean-like dietary pattern, there is a lack of knowledge about how children from different European countries compare with each other in relation to the adherence to this pattern. In response to this need, we calculated the Mediterranean diet score (MDS) in 2-9-year-old children from the Identification and prevention of dietary-and lifestyle-induced health effects in children and infants (IDEFICS) eight-country study.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Using 24 h dietary recall data obtained during the IDEFICS study (n = 7940), an MDS score was calculated based on the age- and sex-specific population median intakes of six food groups (vegetables and legumes, fruit and nuts, cereal grains and potatoes, meat products and dairy products) and the ratio of unsaturated to saturated fats. For fish and seafood, which was consumed by 10% of the population, one point was given to consumers. The percentages of children with high MDS levels (43) were calculated and stratified by sex, age and by having at least one migrant parent or both native parents. Demographic (sex and age) and socioeconomic characteristics (parental education and income) of children showing high (43) vs low (<= 3) MDS levels were examined.
RESULTS: The highest prevalence of children with MDS 43 was found among the Italian pre-school boys (55.9%) and the lowest among the Spanish school-aged girls (26.0%). Higher adherence to a Mediterranean-like dietary pattern was not associated with living in a Mediterranean country or in a highly educated or high-income family, although with some exceptions. Differences in adherence between boys and girls or age groups varied between countries without any general pattern.
CONCLUSIONS: With the exception of Italian pre-schoolers, similar adherence levels to a Mediterranean-like dietary pattern have been observed among European children
Parameterization of a coarse-grained model of cholesterol with point-dipole electrostatics
© 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. We present a new coarse-grained (CG) model of cholesterol (CHOL) for the electrostatic-based ELBA force field. A distinguishing feature of our CHOL model is that the electrostatics is modeled by an explicit point dipole which interacts through an ideal vacuum permittivity. The CHOL model parameters were optimized in a systematic fashion, reproducing the electrostatic and nonpolar partitioning free energies of CHOL in lipid/water mixtures predicted by full-detailed atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The CHOL model has been validated by comparison to structural, dynamic and thermodynamic properties with experimental and atomistic simulation reference data. The simulation of binary DPPC/cholesterol mixtures covering the relevant biological content of CHOL in mammalian membranes is shown to correctly predict the main lipid behavior as observed experimentally
