    Failure Modeling in an Orthotropic Plastic Material Model Under Static and Impact Loading

    An orthotropic elasto-plastic damage material model (OEPDMM) suitable for impact analysis of composite materials has been developed through a joint research project funded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The developed material model has been implemented into LS-DYNA\uae, a commercial finite element program. The material model is modular comprising of deformation, damage and failure sub-models. The deformation sub-model captures the rate and/or temperature dependent elastic and inelastic behavior via a visco-elastic-plastic formulation. The damage sub-model predicts the reduction in the elastic stiffness of the material. The failure sub-model predicts when there is no more load carrying capacity in the finite element and erosion of the element from the finite element model. Most of the input parameters required to drive OEPDMM are in the form of tabulated data. The deformation sub-model is driven by a set of tabulated stress-strain data for a given strain-rate and temperature combination. The damage sub-model is driven by tabulated damage parameter-strain data. Two failure sub-models have been implemented \u2013 Puck Failure Model and Generalized Tabulated Failure Model. Puck Failure Model requires scalar parameters as input whereas, the Generalized Tabulated Failure Model is driven by a set of equivalent failure strain tabulated data. The work presented here focuses on the enhancements made to OEPDMM with emphasis on the background, development, and implementation of the failure sub-models. OEPDMM is verified and validated using a carbon/epoxy fiber reinforced composite. Two validation tests are used to evaluate the failure sub-model implementation - a stacked-ply test carried out at room temperature under quasi-static tensile and compressive loadings, and several high-speed impact tests where there is significant damage and material failure of the impacted panel. Results indicate that developed procedures provide the analyst with a reasonable and systematic approach to building predictive impact simulation models

    Development of an Input Suite for an Orthotropic Composite Material Model

    An orthotropic three-dimensional material model suitable for use in modeling impact tests has been developed that has three major components elastic and inelastic deformations, damage and failure. The material model has been implemented as MAT213 into a special version of LS-DYNA and uses tabulated data obtained from experiments. The prominent features of the constitutive model are illustrated using a widely-used aerospace composite the T800S3900-2B[P2352W-19] BMS8-276 Rev-H-Unitape fiber resin unidirectional composite. The input for the deformation model consists of experimental data from 12 distinct experiments at a known temperature and strain rate: tension and compression along all three principal directions, shear in all three principal planes, and off axis tension or compression tests in all three principal planes, along with other material constants. There are additional input associated with the damage and failure models. The steps in using this model are illustrated composite characterization tests, verification tests and a validation test. The results show that the developed and implemented model is stable and yields acceptably accurate results

    Implementation of a Tabulated Failure Model Into a Generalized Composite Material Model Suitable for Use in Impact Problems

    The need for accurate material models to simulate the deformation, damage and failure of polymer matrix composites under impact conditions is becoming critical as these materials are gaining increased use in the aerospace and automotive communities. The aerospace community has identified several key capabilities which are currently lacking in the available material models in commercial transient dynamic finite element codes. To attempt to improve the predictive capability of composite impact simulations, a next generation material model is being developed for incorporation within the commercial transient dynamic finite element code LS-DYNA. The material model, which incorporates plasticity, damage and failure, utilizes experimentally based tabulated input to define the evolution of plasticity and damage and the initiation of failure as opposed to specifying discrete input parameters such as modulus and strength. The plasticity portion of the orthotropic, three-dimensional, macroscopic composite constitutive model is based on an extension of the Tsai-Wu composite failure model into a generalized yield function with a non-associative flow rule. For the damage model, a strain equivalent formulation is used to allow for the uncoupling of the deformation and damage analyses. For the failure model, a tabulated approach is utilized in which a stress or strain based invariant is defined as a function of the location of the current stress state in stress space to define the initiation of failure. Failure surfaces can be defined with any arbitrary shape, unlike traditional failure models where the mathematical functions used to define the failure surface impose a specific shape on the failure surface. In the current paper, the complete development of the failure model is described and the generation of a tabulated failure surface for a representative composite material is discussed

    Framework for Predicting Failure in Polymeric Unidirectional Composites through Combined Experimental and Computational Mesoscale Modeling Techniques

    As composites continue to be increasingly used, finite element material models that homogenize the composite response become the only logical choice as not only modeling the entire composite microstructure is computationally expensive but obtaining the entire suite of experimental data to characterize deformation and failure may not be possible. The focus of this paper is the development of a modeling framework where plasticity, damage, and failure-related experimental data are obtained for each composite constituent. Mesoscale finite elements models consisting of multiple repeating unit cells are then generated and used to represent a typical carbon fiber/epoxy resin unidirectional composite to generate the complete principal direction stress-strain curves. These models are subjected to various uniaxial states of stress and compared with experimental data. They demonstrate a reasonable match and provide the basic framework to completely define the composite homogenized material model that can be used as a vehicle for failure predictions

    Verification and Validation of a Three-Dimensional Orthotropic Plasticity Constitutive Model Using a Unidirectional Composite

    A three-dimensional constitutive model has been developed for modeling orthotropic composites subject to impact loads. It has three distinct components—a deformation model involving elastic and plastic deformations; a damage model; and a failure model. The model is driven by tabular data that is generated either using laboratory tests or via virtual testing. A unidirectional composite—T800/F3900, commonly used in the aerospace industry, is used in the verification and validation tests. While the failure model is under development, these tests indicate that the implementation of the deformation and damage models in a commercial finite element program, LS-DYNA, is efficient, robust and accurate
