    The philosophic character of English XIVth century mysticism

    Our thesis falls into four main sections. First of all we shall give a very brief account of Platonism, or rather, these aspects of it that most concern us. Then we shall study in the same restricted manner, such parts of the teaching of Augustine, Bonaventura, and others who have deeply influenced our mystics. We shall also notice the general bearing of the doctrines of Aquinas and the Victorines. The third section deals with such matters in the teaching of the English mystics as have value for a thesis on the philosophic character of their mysticism. The fourth and main section deals with that teaching from the point of view of philosophy, and then ends with a general conclusion

    Large city-regions around the world are the principal hubs of economic and cultural globalization. In the United States, for example, 10 megapolitan regions, defined as clustered networks of metropolitan regions, have been identified. Using the criterion of contiguous metropolitan counties, in this paper I propose a definition of US Megalopolis that consists of 52,310 square miles stretching across 12 states, one district (District of Columbia), 124 counties, 13 metropolitan areas and the four major metro regions of Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington-Baltimore. In the rest of the paper, I discuss, in turn, the environmental impacts, the economic restructuring and the political entity of Megalopolis.Les grans ciutats regió del món constitueixen els nodes principals de la globalització econòmica i cultural. Als EUA, per exemple, s'han identificat 10 grans regions metropolitanes definides com a xarxes agrupades de grans àrees metropolitanes. En aquest article, hi proposo una definició de Megalòpoli, que comprèn 53.310 milles quadrades i s'estén per 12 estats, un districte federal (Districte de Columbia), 124 comtats, 13 àrees metropolitanes i 4 grans regions metropolitanes (Boston, Nova York, Filadèlfia i Washington-Baltimore). A la resta del treball, s'hi examinen els impactes ambientals, la reestructuració econòmica i l'entitat política de Megalòpoli.Las grandes ciudades regiones del mundo constituyen los principales nodos de la globalización económica y cultural. En los EEUU, por ejemplo, se han identificado 10 regiones metrópolis definidas como redes agrupadas de grandes áreas metropolitanas. En este artículo, propongo una definición de Megalópolis, que comprende 53.310 millas cuadradas y se extiende por 12 estados, 1 distrito federal (el Distrito de Columbia), 124 condados, 13 áreas metropolitanas y 4 grandes regiones metropolitanas (Boston, Nueva York, Filadelfia y Washington-Baltimore). En el resto del trabajo, se examinan los impactos ambientales, la restructuración económica y la entidad política de Megalópolis.Les grandes villes régions du monde constituent les principaux noyaux de la globalisation économique et culturelle.     Floods of May 1943 in Missouri

    The year 1943 will be remembered for a long time as a year of great floods in the Middle West. Floods were occurring in some section of Missouri from April to June. The period of highest stream flow in general occurred during the month of May, and it is the May flood to which this paper pertains. It is quite possible that the importance of this flood is not generally recognized. Although everyone realizes that it was a major catastrophe, only planners for the future, particularly designing engineers, can fully appreciate the benefits which will be obtained from the information which was collected as a result of the flood. It is almost universally recognized among engineers that the best indication as to the behavior of a stream in the future can be obtained from a study of its behavior in the past. The designer of a flood-control project, a hydroelectric development, a bridge, or any structure adjacent to a stream, must obtain all the information he can as to the maximum flow and the highest water-surface elevation likely to occur in the stream. In 1921 the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources, began the systematic collection of stream-flow records in Missouri. The probable frequency of a flood such as that of May 1943 is much greater than the length of time from 1921 to date. For instance, at certain points on the Osage River the highest flood known prior to 1943 occurred in 1844. In May 1943 the river was from four to eight feet higher at those points than it was in 1844. Therefore it can be seen that, strange as it seems, the catastrophic flood of May 1943 may prove invaluable to planners and designers for years to come --Introduction, page 4

    An Industrial Digitalization Platform for Condition Monitoring and Predictive Maintenance of Pumping Equipment

    This paper is concerned with the implementation and field-testing of an edge device for real-time condition monitoring and fault detection for large-scale rotating equipment in the UK water industry. The edge device implements a local digital twin, processing information from low-cost transducers mounted on the equipment in real-time. Condition monitoring is achieved with sliding-mode observers employed as soft sensors to estimate critical internal pump parameters to help detect equipment wear before damage occurs. The paper describes the implementation of the edge system on a prototype microcontroller-based embedded platform, which supports the Modbus protocol; IP/GSM communication gateways provide remote connectivity to the network core, allowing further detailed analytics for predictive maintenance to take place. The paper first describes validation testing of the edge device using Hardware-In-The-Loop techniques, followed by trials on large-scale pumping equipment in the field. The paper concludes that the proposed system potentially delivers a flexible and low-cost industrial digitalization platform for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance applications in the water industry
